Jay FicLoverFor example, you can try answering one or more of these questions:1.What usually makes you choose to read a fic at first sight the most? a) a good title? b) a good summary? c) the reviews number? d) after visiting the reviews page? e) the author's penname? f) the rating? g) the genre/s? h) a bit of all the above? 2. What do you think mostly makes a good summary? a) that it gives lots of info on the story, giving you a pretty good idea of what the fic will be about. b) that it gives little info on the story, leaving you intrigued and curious. c) when it states what the pairing will be from the start. 3. What mostly makes you want to CONTINUE reading a fic after the first chapter? a) the pairing? b) the lenght of the first chapter? c) the quality of the first chapter? d) the amount of reviews given to the first chapter? e) the quality of the reviews given to the first chapter? f) a little of all the above? | #2 Jan 03rd 2006, 12:07pm

tweetypie987Hiya, Jay!Here's what I think makes GREAT DBZ/SM fics: The Title: The title is sometimes the most important part of the story, because it jumps out and grabs people, gets them interested in reading what story it is. But, I've also read some stories where the titles haven't been too bold, or whatnot, and the stories have been excellent. It's just one of those things that you have to watch for, but I defintely think a catchy title. And the rest is a little bit of all the above, 'cause all those a great essentials to having a great fic. Hmm... what makes me continue reading a story is sometimes because the pairing is catchy. But, then I find the storyline, and OH BOY! does that story take me for a ride! It's great. I've also found through experience that just stumbling upon a story is good too, whether you mean to read it or not. Even just one sentance in that story can have you hooked. It's great! And, once again, all of the above. All of those things you mentioned helps a lot, Jay. I think sometimes the biggest part is the summary. No pressure on anyone, but sometimes it's the most crucial part of the story, because it makes you want to jump in and read lots and lots. Summaries rock! | #3 Jan 03rd 2006, 11:43pm

Jay FicLoverThanks for your comment, Tweetypie. :-)I agree with you on that: a good first impression is only accomplished with a good summary. That's why one of the things I'd like to discuss here, specially, is what makes a summary be good, and how to write a good summary. This may seem like a minor idiot subject, but trust me guys when I bet it probably isn't. Anyway, anyone else who wants to try answering the q |

MasterMillerLITE1.Title has a little bit to do with it, but I wouldn't grade my entire decesion on it. A solid summary also helps a lot. I'd have to say number of reviews and quality of reviews do send a signal, but sometimes I read anyway even if there isn't a great amount of reviews. I'd rather have a few high-quality reviews than a lot of "OMG MORE" reviews. Ratings and genre rarely catch my attention (unless I'm in the mood for something specific). So, I guess it's d) for me. 2. It's a toss up between a) and b). So long as it seems coherent and has an apparent train of thought, I'll most likely continue into the story. Pairings in the summary mean little to me unless - again - I'm looking for something specific at the time. 3. Definitely b) and c), although I'd take quality over length (that sounded really weird...). |

miroku-has-darknessyou a good story I would have to go with a, b, and a little bit e the title and the summary have a huge effect on the the number of reveiws but the number of reveiws doesn't mean if it is a good or bad story just that a lot or little ppl decided to it the little button that everyone loves and e) is important only if the writer is famous like let's say zoin he/she 4 fics and i like some of them but everytime i see that he/she updated or a new story i automaticly have to read it |

RLBA) - Yes, usually the title affects my decision to even check out a story; though not everytime.B) - Sometimes a good summary will make me take a look, but it's not very important. C) - The amount of reviews heavily affects my decision. D) - Sometimes even if there aren't many reviews, I'll visit the review page; and see WHO reviewed it. If it's an author I respect, I'll usually give the story a chance. G) - I normally look for stories with humour or action, so yes this affects my decision. I know my alphabet by the way, I just answered the ones I felt like responding to... | #8 Jan 18th 2006, 10:54pm
