I don't want to use that idea yet. If I use it before the end of PM, that implies/confirms that it's going down the Deirdre route. If I outright refuse to write it, that confirms/implies I'm going down the Tiasal route. If I stay vague about it, there's a possibility it'll end in the traditional 'Lady or the Tiger' thing. But needless to say, I've been wanting to write it for a while so I'll write it after PM's done if it doesn't happen in it. ;)

As for the boarding school, I had a mini panic attack. But I got to play with the mice one girl was illegally keeping in her room. I managed to keep from crying or embarrassing myself horribly, so I consider it a plus.

Oh well. I'll look forward to that fluff for when it eventually happens. :P

I looks like things are getting a bit better, I hope it carries on that way. *hugs*

*hugs back* I'm just terrified of making a decision at this point. I've been consistently miserable in all my schools since fifth grade and I was malcontent my entire elementary school career. (Preschool was fine, though--it was a Jewish place where they served lots of challah and grape juice. Did you know that challah is awesome when dipped in grape juice?) I don't want to spend another year being so unhappy. But the kids seemed really, really friendly and quirky. One of the first guys I saw walking by had a full-size Mohawk. Who has the patience to deal with those things these days?

But on the plus side, I wrote an angry four-page letter to the administrators of my school on the fly during the long drive to the new school I'm looking at. My dad pointed out that I would probably succeed in getting them to lose sleep over it, which probably made me happier than it should have. I now feel like a terrible person. We're going to send it after I get all my grades, assuming I'm not going back next year.

Edit: And I now realize that I have no Benadryl, which I've been dependent on helping me sleep for a week. And I had a two-hour nap during the drive home. So yeah. Smurf's not going to sleep for a while. (And I'm wearing three layers and I'm still freezing. In May. This should not be.)

What's challah?

My parents were informed that I was weird on my first day at nursery school. I spent the whole day painting and ignoring everyone else. Nothing's changed. :P

That sound promising. At least you seem to be able to make friends, and if the people there are nice it should be easier to fit in.

You're not a terrible person. Sometimes a strongly-worded letter is what's needed to bring problems to attention, and you certainly have some legitiment complaints. I take it you're planning on staying off school for the rest of this year, then starting somewhere new after the summer holidays?

What's challah?

It's the braided bread that is mostly affiliated with Jewish people? (God, that's good bread... And this is from the people who gave us matzah, so I'm thinking that our ancestors were just really, really good at inventing different breads.)

You should have seen me in the toddler center. :P Apparently, most toddlers have huge separation issues and parents need to stay nearby for a few days. For me, I practically pushed them away. Then I made a wall of cardboard blocks and hid behind it. Then I was sent to a psychologist. :D I got therapy in early!

That sound promising. At least you seem to be able to make friends, and if the people there are nice it should be easier to fit in.

Apparently, one of the dorms has a hedgehog as the illegal dorm pet. I'm still not sure how that started.

Yeah. I'm wondering if I should have even visited the school today. Being there, trying to hold back panic in the middle of a Spanish class, reminded me that I'm not in as good shape as I'd like to think.

The point of that was, once again, the Jews of the area were being discriminated against, and couldn't worship at all. And their temple was desecrated.

That is certainly one interpretation. Come with me to the Religion thread and I'll tell you the other side's.

Ooo, mice are cute! I'm sorry about your little attack, but it's nice to know that othter than that nothing upset you too much. The school itself seemed like a nice place?

A hedgehog? Did you get to see the hedgehog? Was it cute? How do they hide a hedgehog...?

*Hugs* I hope things work out for you.

What if they find the hedgehog and mice?

Also, angry letters are really cathartic, and you have some legitimate complaints. You're not a bad person for feeling happy about it.

I've got one: Belkar/Soul-Spliced Vaarsuvius

As for its fluff source... I'll PM you so as to not give it away to the others.

Never heard of it. Google to the rescue!

But you managed to get through it, that's a start. :)

And I suspect completely staying away from these situations completelywould make it worse when you eventually have to go back. Just don't let it get overwhelming.

Well, the hedgehog has already been found and is just kept by the dorm head. If the mice were found, the girl would probably have to give them to her mother to take care of during school, but she mentioned that her mother hates mice so I'm guessing that she'd be forced to give them away. Sadly, I didn't get to see the hedgehog; it was part of another dorm that I didn't visit. :(

But the school was very nice, and if I wasn't in such a delicate state of mind, it definitely looks like a place I could thrive. They had naked pictures drawn by the students put up on their walls. Just by that fact alone, I can tell that I'd probably get along pretty well there. (And they have a farm with cows and horses. I saw a little baby calf! :D Three of them! :D :D They licked my hand!)

It's just too bad that my current school turned out so badly. If I had gone ten years ago, it would have never happened. Since the new headmaster came along, the school has started actively trying to get more athletic and preppy, and the admissions people didn't get the memo and they advertised it as the creative safe haven for artists that it once was. They're teaching the body and the mind fine, but along the way, I have the feeling that they forgot the heart.

I suggest moving the conversation over to the WS thread. Objections? There's no Roland here to keep us in check. (Isn't that supposed to be your job, WS?)

Oh, right. Yeah, move it to the WS thread. :P (I keep forgetting that I'm supposed to be policing people.)

*clears throat* Alrighty, guys, you have one more day to vote on the Squickies before the polls close. (The poll is here http://www.fanfiction.net/u/1213325/ on the top of my profile if you don't know where it is.) Whoever wins gets to put the trophy (made by Masamune here: http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?p=8169245#post8169245 though she sadly has not made herself known to us since the closing of the thread. Speaking of which, did anyone give her the link?) in their signature, presumably in the playground, though if they have a signature elsewhere they can put it there too. And you get a banner for the pairing of your choice. (Speaking of which, is anyone willing to make another trophy for the next contest?)

It's time we start thinking about the guidelines and theme for the next contest. Any suggestions and/or preferences?

I'm just warning you, if the one I voted for doesn't win, I'm demanding a recount!

How about crossovers?

5/16/2010 #166
Water-smurf

I'm leaving on an hour-long car ride soon, so I'll just put this out there.

One, I'm sure we'll have plenty of time for recounting. ;P

Two, I like that idea. For the next Squickies, it's going to be a crossover of any length, preferably a crossover with something completely outside of OotS, like Star Trek or Harry Potter. We'll figure out the details once the voting poll is down tomorrow. Remember to cast your votes! :D Rock the vote!

Ooh, I might do a OOTS/Murphy's Law crossover...

Sue Snell

Already voted for the squickies, but I wish I could vote for more than two; that was a great turnout with lots of good work.

Ooo! That sounds like fun! Coffee and I could try the Discworld crossover we once theorized about! Or how about Elan ends up in the Star Wars universe or the Order gets sucked into a version of Oz, perhaps the one in Wicked (the musical, I don't like the novel as much) or I could do that one about Scruffy going to the world of Cats that I promised but never started... *schemes*

Oh good god Belkar with a DEATH NOTE... O_ONah. He enjoys the stabbing too much.

5/16/2010 #177
Sue Snell

Nah. He enjoys the stabbing too much.

Yes, but stabbing doesn't have the advantage of controlling people's actions before they die. Plus, if he just takes some time to think out what he writes he can have the best of both worlds. For example:

"Vaarsuvius, 4:30 PM, internal bleeding due to stab wounds inflicted by Belkar Bitterleaf. Thirty seconds prior, finishes having mind-numbing (in a good way) sex with Belkar Bitterleaf."

I doubt he'd have as good grammar, vocabulary, spelling, and syntax, but I wouldn't put it past him to consider entering something akin to my sample entry above in a Death Note.

5/16/2010 #178
CoffeeIncluded

You honestly think that Belkar would think it through that much? :P

Listen, the moment he realizes that he can make people die from spontaneous combustion...

5/16/2010 #179
Sue Snell

I'm sure it would occur to him eventually, especially if he got encouragement from a fun-loving shinigami. Sadly Vaarsuvius will probably have fallen victim to spontaneous combustion by this point...
