I think because they're complex and fun to write. Their moods are so much alike, they clash.xD

You do get ones that depict Vegeta's character really well. And also, you will mostly find Goku/Chichi, Vegeta/Bulma, Krillin/18 high school fics where all the couples are focused on, not just Vegeta and Bulma.

Just a quick question. Has anyone ever selected Vegeta's name in the upper "Char:" tab just to see how many stories there are with him in it? He massly tops any other character in story count at a wopping 291 pages. Following him is Trunks at 169, Bulma and Goku are tied at 154, and Gohan at 133. Interesting, isn't it?

Interesting, yes. Surprising, not really. To me Vegeta is really the only character that is ... human. (Ironic word choice, haha.) But to me he's much more relatable then other characters. He's selfish, jealous, prideful. He has actual flaws, while other characters have hardly any. He's had a hard life, while others lived effortlessly... And it's not that the other characters aren't good characters, I just think he inspires the most creativity. :)

We all love him. Nothing else to it. :D My friend, who is a huge Goku fan, once asked me why "everyone" liked Vegeta so much. I told her it's because he's him. :D

It is really easy to write about Vegeta, even a story by himself without Bulma, because he is such a mysterious character and trying to figure him out can take pages and pages.

D4cHilliN

True! That's the thing I love the most about him. Even if Bulma isn't in the story, it can still be interesting with Vegeta. He has so many unknown unknowns ^^ and he can be placed into ALMOST any category.

That true, because even if he isn't the most humourous character in the series, if you put him in a funny situation, it is just as funny for that exact reason.

Hey, have you guys every noticed how few times Vegeta calls Bulma by her name?

This is one of my fav scenes when he does:

Bulma: Ahh! How dare you Vegeta! Uh! Every time you stick your geeky little face in front of Trunks, you make him cry! Grr...

Krillin: Hee hee hee hee hee hee hee hee...

Bulma: It's alright. Your daddy's not going to scare you with that ugly mug of his.

Vegeta: Bulma, will you forget about the child for one minute!

A cute slip of the tongue? He doesn't like to call her by her first name usually. Or is that just in fannon land?

Vegeta only really calls Bulma woman before they "got together" such as in the episode with the pink shirt and the one where the capsule three explodes. In the manga, he calls her "Vulgar woman" when she flirts with him during their return from Namek. For the remainder of the series he mainly calls her by her first name. Vegeta constantly calls her woman only in fan works. This is probably due to the fact that he didn't feel the need to call her by her first name until there was some type of relationship between the two, where he had more respect for her. Because there is such limited screen time with the two we don't know if he does this or not, but it is very possible that he would, even if just out of annoyence. In an episode of GT Vegeta says something along the lines of "What is taking that woman so long?" I think the idea is as close to canon you can get without having any real general proof.

That makes sense.

I've heard him call her by her first time a few times before so I had a clue that they were STILL indeed together. xD

And once, I heard him refer by yelling at Goku when he promised that Old Kai could kiss Bulma. :D I love that part. It made me laugh.

Yes! 'tis my favourite part too when Vegeta goes ballistic about Goku promising the Kai a kiss from Bulma. Its like we see the possesive side of Vegeta he keeps hidden so well, and that he holds some sort of regard for monogamy and faithful relationships

Hello all! I come bearing brownies! -waggles brownie box-

Does anyone else share my view that Saiyans who 'mate' probably are monogamous simply because if they weren't, there was a very real possibility that their betrayed partner would kick their ** and possibly kill them? 'Cus that's gotta be a pretty powerful incentive to stay faithful. Just a thought ^.^

And once, I heard him refer by yelling at Goku when he promised that Old Kai could kiss Bulma. :D I love that part. It made me laugh.

That was one of my favorite parts of the series as well XD

I highly recommend watching the Japanese version of that scene though, because Gokuu actually promised the old guy nude pictures of Buruma.

I also love the part when Gohan was still training under the old Kaioshin and Gokuu promised to allow him to touch Buruma's Boobs and ** and Gohan mutters 'doesn't that count as sexual harrassment?'

I guess the question is whether one of the mates would care if the other cheated enough to beat the crap out of them. My belief is that Saiyan culture is so steeped in tradition and custom that their honour and pride dictates their faithfulness. Yeah Oh, and thanks for the brownie. I'll bring the lamingtons next time (something essentially aussie).

Saiyans seem to be a very protective and aggresive race. I would think they would be extremely jealous and violent in certain cases such as this as a result. Vegeta's anger towards Goku about the matter explains as much, for if Vegeta really didn't care, he wouldn't have even mentioned it. He wasn't even certain it was Bulma he was mentioning (although it wasn't hard, there aren't many middle aged woman Goku knew at the time) and jumped to the conclusion and nearly bitten off Goku's head in the process. I believe a race as proud and aggresive as the Saiyans would be too arrogant to just sleep around with a female just to get them pregnant without staking some sort of claim on them as their own. They would be very over-protective of their mates, possibly the event of fighting over one being very common. However, the idea of "bonded mates" is a whole different story.

Its difficult to say isn't it whether attributes such as manogamy, affection or loyalty are common amongst Saiyans or whether these are traits Vegeta learnt and adopted after spending so many years on earth. I must agree that at any rate Vegeta was feeling posessive and protective about Bulma and her being intimate with someone else. Virtual Lamingtons for all!
#120 Jun 05th, 9:58pm

I think loyalty would definitely be a trait amongst all Saiyans - if not to their king then to their race.

#121 Jun 17th, 1:04pm
bimbosarahsurfchick

yes they are a very proud race, even Goku shows he is proud to be a Saiyan in some respects, although he still thinks of himself as a human the majority of the time.

The main reason Vegeta is like he is, is because each and every member of his race wanted to kiss his **! X

Hmm... well, my opinion is that it's unfair to say that every Saiya-jin has certain attributes. Pride, loyalty, possessiveness... these are all personality traits that differ from person to person- regardless of race. The show barely gives us anything on Saiya-jin culture or customs, and come to think of it... we're talking about an entire planets worth of people. If the population is any bit as large as our 6 billion, I'm sure there were many different groups of Saiya-jins on Vegetasei, each with a different culture/belief system.

Plus, is Vegeta even a good example of a Saiyan-jin? He was taken from Vegetasei when he was practically a toddler. Obviously, HE feels that his race makes up a significant part of his identity, but how much could he really know in terms of culture/values?

I think Vegeta is a good example of a Saiyan of the higher class and Nappa a lower class warrior. Vegeta was about 8 when he was taken and he should have had a good grasp of the culture by then as it would have been part of his education and upbringing because he was being groomed to be king some day. Being royalty and being told constantly by his father and others that he was the best only added to his arrogance and pride level. Pride, loyalty and possessiveness to a point are hallmarks of a warrior race. They were supposedly modeled after the Spartans. They're proud, loyal to their leaders and have a brotherhood with their fellow warriors and if there is a chance you may die and not return, what you have at home becomes precious to you. Where Saiyans differ is they have a caste system based on power levels and strength. Vegeta would have also learned a bit of tradition and culture from Nappa as well because he was older and being the only two Saiyans on Freeza's ship they were always together. Nappa however isn't as well educated as Vegeta being of lower class.

What makes it hard to pick out the characteristics of Vegeta's Saiyan heritage is all the emotional baggage that is in the way. His basic principles were tained by 20 years of captivity. You kind of have to look at the other Saiyans and watch how they act to get a better idea of how he would have been if he had been allowed to grown up on his homeworld.

Just as a side note, why does everyone refer to a Saiyan's woman as his mate? They're not animals dispite their Oozaru form. It just makes me a little crazy to see 'mate", "mated pair" or "bonded mates' used. Makes me think of wolves or ducks or something, not intellegent humanoids. I always wondered where that started.

WarriorFormallyKnownAsPrince

The "mate" thing started when Saiyan bonding became popular in B/V fanfiction... it's been going in and out of fashion probably since the mid/late 90's. I'm pretty sure Katchan or mia skywalker introduced it, and countless people have copied, twisted, and tweaked it since then (i.e. adding in neck biting, telepathy, ect. ect.)

Also Nappa wasn't considered low class... on the contrary he was an elite fighter.

#125 Jul 16th, 10:51am
bimbosarahsurfchick

Nappa was definitely an Elite, he was once in charge of the entire Saiyan army. (he quoted in the dub)

I have noticed too that almost all the fanfics I read has the neck biting thing - I like it. Its kind of a Saiyan thing me thinks... I agree with WarriorFormallyKnownAs... I recon it was fan-made.

I have never heard of mia Skywalker or Katchan!? somebody please explain? do they write fanfictions? they sound like really good writers.

#126 Jul 25th, 1:22am
WarriorFormallyKnownAsPrince

As for the Nappa quote about being a general... I think that was only said in the American (ocean?) dub... I'm pretty sure it's not in the original Japanese anime or in the manga, so it's not cannon. But he definitely was considered an elite as his power level was over 5000.

I'm surprised you haven't heard of either authors, bimbosarah! They were really well-known back in the day... but I guess that was at the height of DBZ's popularity(which was a while ago.) Anyway, you can search mia skywalker and find her profile. She even still has her website up and if I remember correctly, and I could be mistaken as I haven't been to her website probably since '03, she has a really good collection of B/V fics. Old ones, but good ones...at least I thought they were good when I read them so long ago... when I was like 12... Also admira's website has *a lot* of links to fics that a lot of people consider classic b/v's...

What fanfics/authors are popular these days anyway?

#127 Jul 25th, 5:01pm
georgethepirateking

Totally agree. i think its because Vegeta's just more interesting than Goku. Goku's kind of the stereotypical hero and that can be kind of annoying. Plus Vegeta and Bulma's relationship is far more interesting. i like seeing the characters out of character anyway. Vegeta being really nice to Bulma because he wants to cheer her up, or he's paranoid cause he thinks she's cheating on him with Goku. So many ideas and so little time. :P

#128 Jul 30th, 9:25am
bimbosarahsurfchick

Yeah I totally agree with you there!

Goku can have complex relationships, but its much more difficult to figure than Bulma and Vegeta just because of Vegeta's mysterious upbringing and his past problems. Plus Bulma is such a fiery character the two are just (wow!)

Goku and chichi are just like... well kind of boring.

Thanks for the mia skywalker linkie! I shall go and check that out now!

I used to read lots of fanfics when i was in high school, somehow i must have just missed her out somehow or maybe i have just forgotten!

I got back into writing after finishing my first year of college, and here i am now! Still as nutty about dbz and bulma and vegeta as ever so i guess i never really left it! i know what you mean about back in the day... sadly dbz seems to be dwindelling which is ever so frustrating, especially when people waste their time writing terrible fanfics like vegeta x goten or worse vegeta x pann! ewwwwwww. It ends up putting many people off dragonball z which is sad!

I'm half anticiptating half dreading the db live action movie... the storyline looks like a badly written fanfic but at the same time justin chatwin is hot! 0-0 seriously tho, the storyline is a little. okay wayyyy off the anime and manga! goku goes to school :-( he doesn't live in the woods... he gets told he is an alien by piccolo not his brother! he gets picked on by bullies.... its not looking to good.

I'm kind of scared its going to breed a new kind of fan, not everybody are like us :0( its scary! on the otherhand it might help give a new lease of life into the dbz :-) not really sure how i feel about it to be honest.

I just hope they make vegeta so drop dead gorgeous in the sequals! :-D bulma is really pretty she is being played by emily rossum who i think totally suits the role! x

Yes. I can still remember the time when the DBZ section ont his site was going like crazy. Those were some nice day ^^Although it consumed all of my free time...

I've written two B/V poems from Bulma's point of view and they both are getting a lot of hits, but the're not being reviewed. I don''t get any reviews at all and I thought it was because of the lack of quality :( It may still be the lack of quality, but I've noticed that a lot of other beginning stories from other authors aren't being massivily reviewed as well. I've just began writing and it kind of depresses me...

I too think that B/V is the most interesting couple. Vegeta is just the hottest action figure I've ever seen. I used to draw him when I was younger...

I'd like a DBZ movie!!! But Jessica Alba playing Bulma? YUCKKKKKK. I can't picture her as an intelligent, hotheaded, classy Bulma.
