Dark Goddess HekateTopic: Freakin' Rinoa!!!!!! Okay, personally, I'm tired of Rinoa's little 'Damsel in Distress' thing. want an example? After Seifer pushes Rinoa toward Adel...she just sits there. HELLO? Rinoa, move. Adel takes a good 10 minutes to break out & Rinoa just SITS THERE!!! If it was me I'd have already gotten up, & ran towards Squall. Nothings stopping her! Seifer has apparently walked off somewhere & nothing is holding her down. So what does she do? Covers her face w/her arms & sits there. Anyone else notice that Squall only starts to act like he cares about Rinoa after she gets Matron's powers? Can anyone say, "She pulled an Ult. Only instead of controlling Seifer, She's making Squall love her?' I can... Anyone else have anything to add? |
|
TakayuWell, I don't /hate/ Rinoa...ah, what the heck, yeah I do! She's just a helpless little /you know what/ that can't do a thing for herself. Maybe she really has cast a spell on Squall. And about her just sitting there, I totally agree with you on that, who in their right mind wouldn't run away when you're pretty much about to be sacrificed to a scorceress? | #2 Jan 19th 2006, 12:12pm

Nea VanilleMy favourite scene is still that one time when she thought she was soooo much smarter than her father and than Squall and his trained mercenaries, and just to that sorceress like a headless chicken and a useless ring resembling the one I bought in China Town... XD |
|
Dark Goddess Hekateyou mean when they first went after Matron? YEAH!!!!! /kicks Rinoa/ LOSER!!!!!! I mean wtf? A little brat w/a ring OR a bunch of trained killers w/weapons? HUmmmmmmm...I wonder who will win...not. stupid **... |

NaomimonI hate Rinoa! I didn't mind her so much at first until Edea set those lizard creatures loose on her. I mean she's all "I'll stop the sorceress all on my own!" and then suddenly it's "Oh I can't fight by myself! I need a big strong man to protect me because I'm just a spoiled little rich girl!" God that ** me off.Words cannot describe how much I lothe her. | #6 Jan 26th 2006, 12:24am

Dark Goddess Hekate...she should die...I mean really. Do you know how many times she's made me die? I'd laugh....you'd laugh 2. |

MajinBakaHentaiI recently finished the game for the first time and I feel a little sheepish to say that I came out of it kinda liking Squall-Rinoa. I'm doing my best to cure that though. I personally think that if the relationship between them lasts six months then they'll be lucky. Squall will backslide into his old habits, Rinoa will get upset and view as "OMG! He doesn't love me anymore!", Squall will cringe - wash, rinse, repeat until one of them blows a gasket. Personally I'd like to see Squall go hide out in Esthar for a while when it does, but then I happen to like the idea of him -not- hating Laguna for life when he finds out the man is his father. |

ZencreationArrrrgh........ I cannot tell you my loathing of that woman who shall not be named.... I wanted to kill her the moment she appeared in the game... She hires Squall and his team to come help her out...but she's a moron and things go wrong.... I took serious pleasure in getting into random fights and then selecting she who shall not be named as Squall's target...it was.....very very very satisfying...you should try it ^_^ I just have to say one more thing about this...if I don't, I am gonna explode... HOW THE HELL CAN ANYONE BE A SQUINOA FAN??!!! I searched through the FF8 Forums to find one that dealt with Seifer and Squall and what do I find? SQUINOA FORUMS....one right after another... I wanted to be SICK!! Anbody with half a brain should be able to see that Squall is GAY! For cryin out loud it is written all over the game if you know what you are looking at! The passion for all things leather first of all. Second of all the Phallic symbology of the gunblades is a dead giveaway and the fight scene between Seifer and Squall, two males alone in the middle of nowhere dueling each other. And then comes the fated scarring of each other... So lets take stock here... Leather, Phallic symbols, male bonding in a remote area, fighting, bloodletting and scarring... Yup...equalls out to "Man thats not gay thats Liberachi Gay!" Okay.... I think I am done venting...sorry about that. Sometimes I get a little carried away. Zen | #10 May 01st 2006, 3:44am

MajinBakaHentaiI have a nice simple solution for Squiona - one that doesn't resort to bashing (because that will lose you any intelligent fans and get you ranted about on FanFicRants): "Squall's relationship with Rinoa had not lasted very long before they both realised it was not going to work. As far as he knew she was off in Timber now." See? Simple. ^_^ | #11 May 01st 2006, 4:02am

ZencreationYeah, I kinda pulled that one in my story In Search of Redemption... It was the easiest way to get out of having to write her into the story....Zen | #12 May 01st 2006, 4:07am

MajinBakaHentai^_^ It's nice to know some people do use it. As my first post on this forum mentioned, I became more tolerant of her after playing the game so blatant bashing is a bit iffy to me (unless it's parody, I'll read bashing in parodies without any problem). | #13 May 01st 2006, 4:13am

Dark Goddess HekateUmmm...yeah. I don't use that method (spelled that wrong didn't I? lol) The reason I don't isn't JUST cause I hate Rinoa, but also, it messes Squall up more. Let's face it. Whispered Screams, all of my fics, many of the SS fics out there feature a "walking the line of suicide and/or mental breakdown" Squall. That's just how most fangirls like him. Completely screwed up. We just use Rinoa to help him become more like the way we WANT him to be. I mean, look @ his life. Almost everything goes wrong. Why not use Rinoa in the same way? We love Seifer more after he comes & "saves" Squall. It's an obsessed fangirl thing.| #14 May 01st 2006, 6:51pm

MajinBakaHentaiHmm... yeah, it wouldn't work in that sort of case. I think then it's a case of not *totally* blaming everything on Rinoa - more their personalities ended up grating and Squall is clueless so when Rinoa comes along and declares "I'm LEAVING!!!!" he can be all o_o and then ;_; and Seifer can come and huggle him. | #15 May 01st 2006, 7:10pm

ZencreationWell I can't really say that I wrote her completely out of the story. The first part of In Search of Redemption deals with why she isn't there at Garden. There really isn't any character interaction, just Squall's memories. She is mentioned again in later chapters once Seifer and Squall are together....but because I simply cannot write Rinoa's personality, there is no interaction... though there is some slight Rinoa bashing made by Seifer. *My Seifer muse has taken on a life of his own and any comments made by him, I cannot be held responsible for.*I do have to agree that it is a fangirl thing to make Squall completely and totally screwed up. Because of his personality it's easy to see Squall doing those sort of things, and then have Seifer come in and give him huggles..sigh... Zen P.S. I will be dropping by to read both of your stories, and shall leave reviews! | #16 May 02nd 2006, 5:40am

MajinBakaHentaiEhh... I don't have any FF8 fics, the ones on my profile are a few very short Baldur's Gate ones. I am however not very far from finishing off a 1sentence theme set for an FF8 crack pairing. I don't think it would be something to post here on FFnet however - it would be too easy to mistake it for a list, and lists are against the TOS. | #17 May 02nd 2006, 5:52am

ZencreationThats alright... I like Baulder's Gate too.. and I would love to see it your "list" it might be interesting. I am unfamilar with that particular story layout so I definitely want to take a look at it.Feel free to e-mail it to me seifergirl@msn.com Zen | #18 May 02nd 2006, 6:03am

MajinBakaHentaiIf you go look up the name "1sentence" on LiveJournal I'm sure you could probably find a few interesting lists. The comm is multi-fandom too, so plenty of variety. I'll email a link when I post mine though. ;) | #19 May 02nd 2006, 6:11am

Dark Goddess HekateMy fics are all FF8 (except 1), none of them are finished, or dead (except MAYBE the one...) none of my FF8s will die. No matter how long they stay idle. My friend has to type about 4 ch. worth of updates for me (I'm 16 & don't have any privacy so I can just Invision my parents reading over my shoulder w/o me knowing. ugh.) Over the summer I'll type out my own stuff. Put that link on here for that 1sent thing..I will wabt to read that. Zen, I HAVE read your In Search story before (a long time ago) now I just gotta remember what happens . grrr. Reread time. lol. Feel free to check out my LJ (though I don't usually have anything exciting on it, I'll write a "Poem" thing tho...& I generally freak out about random things.)| #20 May 02nd 2006, 6:37pm

MajinBakaHentaiBTW, Zen, I wandered over to your profile and read "In Search of Redemption". Barring a couple of minor things that I felt were run by too quick, it's a very good story you have here. I definatelt think I'll be putting this on watch. BTW, you did get Rinoa out of the way very well. ;) | #21 May 03rd 2006, 2:38am

MajinBakaHentaiDammit! FF.net's being a **! Zen, you also have a review that says practically the same thing as my last post here. When I got a notice saying "Method Not Suported" I presumed the review did not get through. :\| #22 May 03rd 2006, 2:41am

ZencreationI will definitely go and check out your livejournal.. I have one as well, though it is hardly the most exciting thing you will ever read. I don't have much of a life and what life I do have is generally B.O.R.I.N.G.I will be reading your fics over the next week or so, but I warn you, I am the worlds slowest reader! It may take me a couple of days to leave you fuzzy reviews. It sucks being 16......and not being able to do what you want to do, but that will change soon enough. | #23 May 03rd 2006, 9:59am

Dark Goddess HekateMy comp. crapped out on me again, so I'm @ my grandma's...again!!!!! grrrr. yeah, I'm a slow reader 2. It'll take me a while to read In Search. cuz I have a 5 page paper due on friday ( about D-Day, I got lucky. lol.) & fri. night I'm going out with a bunch of friends to a bunch of haunted places (just to be our random selves) & Sat. night I'm MIGHT (if my mom let's me) be going to a concert. I'll be 17 in about 2 weeks! . Zen: I left you about 2-3 (4?) reviews the other nite, check em! lol. | #24 May 03rd 2006, 7:52pm

MajinBakaHentaiGo read mimi_sardinia then, I currently don't use majinbakahentai - to the extent that the interests list still has an over-abundance of LotR crap on it. My Mimi_Sardinia journal is the one I got into Final Fantasy with (long story about running into a Cloud icon on a comm I didn't want to use my "real" journal on). Truthfully, I don't talk much about Real Life on my journal, mainly because Real Life is very boring, so I mostly talk fandom crap instead. Yes, 18 is like a golden age. At risk of sounding "When I was your age...", I remember thinking at 18 that even 2 years made a marked difference in my outlook. Now 10 years later I think I mostly have the same outlook as I did at 18. o.O | #25 May 03rd 2006, 7:55pm

ZencreationSorry, I don't know why my reply to your post didn't show up Majin... But I shall try and remember what I wrote... Uhmm... Oh yeah. I know that the beginning of the story totally sucks and I do have a re-write of the first few chapters in mind, though because it is such a long story, I want to get it finished before I go and mess around with it. In fact, once I post a chapter, I won't ever read that chapter again. Simply because I know that once I do I am going to go "WTF was I THINKING??!!!" And start to change things. I do thank you for your lovely reviews, and I hope to see more from you. BTW. I noticed that your profile says you are 27... I myself am 32. I was beginning to think that I was too old to write fanfiction, much less Yaoi fanfiction. It is nice to know that I am not alone. ^_^ I will totally go and check out mimi_sardinia. And I do know what you mean about not talking too much about real life. I update my journal sporadically and only if I am bored or if I actually have something interesting to talk about. And at the risk of sounding like the two little old ladies who sit around drinking tea and tatting lace, yes D.G.H. I too remember 18... and (snicker) I remember 27 too... and after 18 your outlook on life really doesn't change all that much. You have all these new things to look forward to, but when it is all said and done and you have a career that is sucking the life out of you like everyone else on the planet...well then we can actually say you have joined to club. MajinBakaHentaiThe bit in the first couple of chapters that wnet by leaving me a bit "Bhuh? o.O" was the casual mention of Seifer spending several weeks living with the janitor. It'd work better if a better sense of time going past is given - some description of what he's doing in the time. Then again, the idea he manages to stay undetected in Garden for that long also leaves me slightly boggled too. Actually, I'm now 28. I guess I'll have to go edit my profile again to update my age. | #27 May 05th 2006, 5:45am

Dark Goddess HekateIn 10 days I'll be 17!!!! yay!!!! Ahhhhh. yeah, I should spend less time on ff, & more time on studies, but I can't bring myself to focus. lol. My dream is to be a Mech. Engineer & work @ NASA (not going to space, like control room, or working on the ships.) Also I want to be the Hitler of Square Enix! (But I don't see that happening...ever. Sadly.) OMFG! This guy I know was riding his bike (not motorcycle, bycicle) &he got hit by a car! No one knows if he's okay or not! We're really woried. So if you can, pray for him (his name's Morgan.). Ah, thanks. Ah I need to update. lol. Samie fell off the hood of our friend's car (car related accidents, lol. ) We were on his hood & he started driving (we were in the parkinglot, he drove about 5 yds.) & when he braked, she fell off. She's okay, I'm on the phone w/her now, we're laughing. God, we're dumbasses. lol. Of course, Samie's 16 & I'm about to turn 17. lol. There that was my day. I guess. Don't know why I'm writing all of this. oh. well. Maybe I got you 2 to laugh. haha.| #28 May 05th 2006, 3:02pm

Nea VanilleSomeone has mentioned how they cannot understand how anyone could be a Squinoa fan. My sentiments exactly. Squall/Rinoa neither makes sense nor is it interesting, as most canon pairings aren't. I mean, the pairing was already explored to death in the original game and for all intents and purposes, the interesting part of their relationship is already resolved. How many more "Rinoa gets kidnapped and Squall sets out to rescue her for the 10010382920th time" stories do we really need? Most canon pairings are boring and don't call for further exploration in fanfiction, unlike "woulda, coulda, shoulda" pairings like Seifer/Squall! Maybe it's just that I have a different opinion on what fanfiction should be than other people.I think one of the major reasons why I hate Rinoa is just because she's so... stereotypically wimpy, whiny and incompetent. She offends the feminist in me by constantly needing to be rescued by the big strong man. She also offends the feminist in me by being utterly incompetent in just about every way imaginable. If she doesn't personify the stereotype of the cute, weak Asian girl in need for protection, I don't know who does. Rinoa is just completely disturbing. Personally I LOVE strong women who can hold their own and don't act like they need a man to rescue their ** every 10 minutes. Thankfully, every other FF female was heaps and bounds better, more independent and stronger than Rinoa (even Aerith, even Yuna who, while mild-mannered, had strong personalities underneath) and Rinoa is without a doubt the absolute worst female video game character I've ever come across. | #30 Dec 26th 2007, 2:08am

MajinBakaHentaiHeya Nea, I know what you mean, but I also think it's a cultural fault of Japan on a whole - women are frequently stereotyped as one of two types: meek little things, fawning love interests or annoying loudmouths. Not even such notables as you mentioned - Aeris and Yuna - quite dodge it. While they may be strong underneath, they still come in as partly the meek little things and partly as fawning love interests. Rinoa has the fault of being both of those plus being pushy and demanding. I won't ever say that I don't understand how someone can support a pairing - even one I dislike - but I will however retain the right to say "That's fine, but I don't like it.". I'm sure we all have had times we've run into someone who dislikes one of our favourite pairings - or will have an encounter like that - so being gracious is always a good way out. Though it also helps to somewhere to vent. | #32 Dec 26th 2007, 2:31am

Nea VanilleThe main reason why we don't see good female protagonists in video games is because these games are being developed with a male audience in mind, and thus the female characters are tailored around whatever females the producers think the target audience will like. Aeris and Yuna are by no means perfect, and I don't even like them too much, either, but even though they, too, suffer from having been tailor-made to appeal to the male audience, they are still heaps more independent than Rinoa and fit the "damsel in distress" stereotype far less. I'm just saying that it is quite telling that, in a genre where the competition for "worst female game character" is so stiff, and I can't even think of one female game character I truly like outside of the Resident Evil series, Rinoa still manages to be the very worst. | #33 Dec 26th 2007, 2:47am
