Yes, I've been writing, but like you, my encouragement comes from the reviews. Anyway, my new job is on hold from being homeless soon and being sick.

Anyway, sorry I didn't make myself clear. I see the chapters and some new stories, but I still think we all need some cat nip, hehehe.

I'm bound and determined to finish the stories to not let my readers hanging in the wind somehow.

Maybe, since I started this new round of complaining, I should make clear what I meant: Much more than a lack of stories (while a whole front-page of only M/L would be nice, we sure have have more lately than in those times where there was only one lonley M/L story) there seems to be an ever-decreasing community / audience with fewer reviews and general participation (and also for me fewer hits but I will just attribute that to a personal shortcoming) … add that to my apocalyptic brain and it results in a pessimistic ‘DA is dying’…

we have a fast Internet connection at home again (FINALLY, after two months of struggling ... arghh).

After first indoctrinating you with empty promises that it will be immediate and no problems at all? And then they wonder why they get death threats by now…. Anyway, welcome back and here’s more for catching up (beating you to death with that link): http://community.livejournal.com/aurlco/

We all got what you meant Mari...You weren't complaining you were missing our pointless chatter, company, the soul of DA...It wasn't as if any of us were ever on the scene when the whole page was ML, but just that old feel. It was more than just having stories on the front page it was the excitement surrounding them.

Oh and Blue, congrats on the working high speed. Got mine for the first time since leaving college (along with the cable) freaking AMAZING!!!

Agreed: Mari, you weren't complaining, and it didn't sound that way... I just popped off again, unrelated to your comment (frazzled by lack of sleep & frustrated, as usual ; I have to learn to think and *sleep* before posting--or dragging out my soap box!)

I was telling Mia last night that I suspect the fact that we've spread ourselves across several different places on the web may have added slightly to the feeling that no one is around-- before, when we went to one board to check in, it seemed a bit more peopled (especially when there more than only writers there.) Now we have BBWW, RH, IMs and LJ, and few people have gone to DAR in recent weeks.

Should we make a better effort to come and check in one central location more often, say, *here?"

Hullo all! ^_^ This is (to my recollection) the first time I've wandered into this section, but I've been a DA fan since it aired on my local Fox station a few years ago. And since I recently bought S1, I thought I'd check things out around here. Might anyone be so kind as to recommend some lovely stories for me? I'm an avid M/L shipper, but I'll take just about anything, really. Either way, I just wanted to say "hey." :D

hiya! thanks for the welcome :D to answer your question, everything you mentioned and more hehe if its well-written and relatively in-character, ill probably read it. i do, however, have kind of a preference for drama and/or fluff... *shrugs* cuz im just a softie like that ^_^ and reading long or short fics just depends on my timeframe at that point. i have favorites on both ends of the spectrum, and everywhere in between. thankies for the linkage too! the library is closing shortly, but i might be able to check a little bit out before im shooed away hehe again, nice to meet you!

Okay, just trying to give you credit-- I see it in your posts way more than others! :D

if it's been accepted for years without thought by profs on tests then it TOTALLY counts as normal.

My household prof wouldn't weigh in on whether or not he's ever seen it on a test-- OR if he'd accept it, thought or no! ;} (but given that he himself isn't exactly "normal" maybe his vote wouldn't be illustrative, anyway!)

Haha there's also the question of is hubby a good prof? You know the kind that you don't have to fill 2-3 blue books for a single test? And the four hour hand cramp that follows. :-P
#68 Feb 15th, 6:37pm
shywr1ter
Haha there's also the question of is hubby a good prof?

Ha! Even better-- no blue books (at least, last I heard)! Music prof, almost exclusively grad level classes-- so, seminars, makes students do presentations, musical examples to be analyzed, etc... tests more likely to have analysis questions, questions with several mini-essays... (and for undergrads, still lots of what used to be called "drop the needle" tests! ;})

#69 Feb 15th, 9:21pm
Mari83
Gah, thanks, you two reminded me that I need to email a prof who still didn't manage to write down my topics / subjects after I already gave him a corrected version three times (and after having to leave all that info on a file card with his secretary months ago)… I need a tattoo on my forehead for the oral exams.

Blue books?

if it's been accepted for years without thought by profs on tests then it TOTALLY counts as normal.

US profs seem to be really cool with choice of words, mine might even criticize using ‘people’ in itself, without any abbreviation...

"drop the needle" tests

Sounds painful...?

(Whoohoo, now I can punish myself for off-topicness:-)

I *hope* Mia was joking about the abbreviations... though, sadly, there are lots of schools & profs which, more and more, will accept just about anything... (and a *huge* range of quality in both as well!) If she wasn't joking, let's just hope they weren't profs in English classes-- or worse, in teacher training courses! :P

Blue books?

Universal in colleges here-- for some essay-type (or "short answer") tests, exam questions are provided on a 1-2 page hand-out (or overhead, or e-mail, or...) but the student writes her answer in a "blue book" (or several!) --small, stapled booklets (what, 8" x 8"?) of maybe a dozen lined white pages for hand-written answers, bound in cheap, light blue paper. This is in lieu of an exam having one question at the top of page 1, then pp. 2-3 blank, then p.4 with question #2, then the rest of p.4 , and p.5 blank, and so on...

"drop the needle" tests

Sounds painful...?

And dated! Like many idioms, this one has outlasted the actual method what it describes! "Listening tests" -- as in, having to identify a composer, a musical piece, or both, on an exam (especially in classes for non-musicians, "intro to music" sort of classes) -- are often accomplished by the instructor playing a short, random chunk from the middle of the piece. In the old days, when records were used, the prof might "drop the needle" onto some random spot on the record, and have the class identify it from what was played. (of course, now hubby has all musical examples on his MP3 player & just plugs into the classroom's built-in system...)

I need to email a prof who still didn't manage to write down my topics / subjects after I already gave him a corrected version three times

Oh, Mari! Grrr, for you! And because he holds your future in his hands (as well as all that time you have put in so far!) you have to just smile patiently and give it to him again?? (or get that tattoo!)

Sounds like we need to drop the needle on HIM!

...and bad Shy for not only stalling from getting to work on this weekend's project, but doing so by pulling you further down the off-topic path... :P

(lots more fun than work...)

I go to sleep, wake up and the party finished without me. :(

Ah well.

HI QUEENOFHEARTS!!! Good to see new faces around :) In addition to the earlier fic recommendations, you could try my way of looking for good fic to read. Steal from favourites. Haha. Fav. author and fav. stories links are probably the best way to find awesome fics. At least, if you're like me and have way too much time to spend online ;-)

Blue books?

I had bright orange script books during my finals last year, so not only were my hands cramped from all the writing, my eyes were teared up everytime I had to turn to the front page. Horrible.

Should we make a better effort to come and check in one central location more often, say, *here?"

I wouldn't mind all too much, seeing as how most of the time I forget to go to certain sites to check... Which now leads me to the question of why the *** aren't I getting any alerts !?!? Stupid FFn.

This is probably going to be the most uninformative, pointless post ever. Haha.

Off to bed. Party on, people!

I *hope* Mia was joking about the abbreviations...

Haha there wasn't even a smiley with it. I was TOTALLY serious. Man you're probably rolling more in horror over this than you were over the overpriced prof that taught me that I don't need the comma before and, which is still like my favorite thing ever. :-D Of course, this most likely never occurred in an English class, but that's only for the simple reason of they actually matched the amount of writing that needed to be done with the amount of time the test was alloted. even better, my lowest ranked school was ALWAYS the strictest.

I had bright orange script books during my finals last year, so not only were my hands cramped from all the writing, my eyes were teared up everytime I had to turn to the front page. Horrible.

Those would be the gold awful books. I hate those books. Last test I took with one I used four. Of course that was the same class that I spent 14 hours doing a take-home, which is also another good example of crazy profs since he had actually wanted the test back within 18 hours.

US profs seem to be really cool with choice of words, mine might even criticize using ‘people’ in itself, without any abbreviation...

I wouldn't say that. The leeway isn't that great, despite the allowance over an abbreviation or two during a test. Word choice, grammar, punctuation, hell even tabbing and line orientation (psych papers are very structured) are all lovely little red circles.

"drop the needle" tests

Haha I was reading on the music floor a few months ago and they were like music cramming. Soooo peculiar to someone who has never been around that before. It's kinda not so weird now that you've explained it, very English class, with characters/stories, instead of song titles.

Trying to trigger some fic-discussion as a very feeble counter measure to the recent quietness (writing this gives me such a broken record-feeling):

I guess in every fandom there must be a point where everything is read and told and written… However, when exactly this point is reached seems to be a very individual perception, some people losing interest very fast, others sticking around for longer and coming up with new ideas (and yet others leaving fascinating stories unfinished, but that’s another eternal issue) So my question: Is there anything left in DA that isn’t yet covered by fanfic, things you like to see which haven’t been written so far or would like to be done in a different way…?

Or turning the question around and putting it into a more pessimistic perspective: How far and how long can a fandom develop without any new input from its origins in TV or by a single author (and why and how is such original input different from the story lines and ideas that develop within a fan community)?

#78 May 06th, 3:12pm
shywr1ter

Is there anything left in DA that isn’t yet covered by fanfic, things you like to see which haven’t been written so far or would like to be done in a different way…? Short answer-- YES!! I have 3 fic in cold storage at this very moment (outline, cool-IMHO bits) that I am quite certain have not yet been done (trust me--no one else is this loco!) and no time to write them!

I have become obsessed with other characters before & have lost interest, but DA seems to engender SO much more!! Longer & more faux-profound response later-- but had to pipe up at this!

sure =^_^= the premise of DA, and the the fact that it ended so soon (which makes me wanna throttle the Powers That Be *twitch*) leaves such a vast area unexplored. with only 5,605 stories here (respectable enough, but nowhere near the "major" fandoms), the notion that every possible idea has been exhausted kinda makes me laugh. i dont have any specific suggestions right now- ill hafta think on it. id like to write some myself, but id prefer to get my hands on S2 and the books first hehe

Come on Mari, you know there's more. There are tons of things left to do! Fandoms can last for ages. Hell, there's still a small contingent of people writing Back to the Future fic after twenty years and only three movies.

Plus no one's written body switching or alien abductions or demonic possession or wing!fic or Whatever Happened to Herbal fic or What the Hell Was Up with Lydecker's Photos fic or Sketchy is Secretly One of the Escapees fic or Eyes Only Origin fic or or or---there's tons more out there. Personally I've been a bit distracted with original fic recently, but there's still a hell of a lot of DA fic we haven't seen yet. Fear not!

#81 May 07th, 3:23pm
Mari83

So nice to see that there are others seeing things less black. I guess I’m just too pessimistic again – and I see your points, it’s just watching the DA community shrink and shrink… I just like to know how peoples' minds work , what makes them leave etc...

Sketchy is Secretly One of the Escapees fic

Mind-reader, I’ve started a snippet with that a few weeks ago:-)

Ah, I see, frozen Logan needing warming attention:-) Seriously, now I’m curious and want to send a cloning machine so you can double into a working and a writing self. (And coincidentally, off the top of my head I can remember at least three of those ideas you tend to casually mention… )

Is there any way we can lure you into writing DA fic, Queenofhearts? Or hey (shameless advertising), did you see the Christmas in July-challenge – in case you come up with something you’d like to see in DA you could wish for it there…
