So. 2008. And all my stories are still for the Baldur's Gate section :)
I've been here for a while, now, and I have to admit; I didn't expect to be. My first one-shot was posted, 'Anomen's Thoughts' after being written on a whim moments after hearing an Evanescence song playing on some film. I can't remember the film, and I can't remember the name of the song, though I'm sure I could search for it if the mood took me.
After that, I thought I'd try writing something a bit longer, and I followed in the footsteps of many people who've done it both better, and worse, than me. I started writing a tale based on the games.
It wasn't as easy as that, though -- my protagonist changed and altered in the first chapter; and then, several chapters in, when I thought I was getting somewhere, I stopped. I abandoned the story without having posted any of it to here, and started again from scratch. This time, Maiyn was born.
When I re-read 'Discovery' I usually end up sighing. My writing has changed -- maybe for the better, maybe for the worse, but it has changed since that first step on the road of the trilogy. I always planned to go back and rewrite it, but several things have stopped me from ever doing that. Time was a major factor, but also some advice I got from esteemed friends was enough to push me into moving forward. 'Reclaiming' is more mature, perhaps better developed. But despite being planned from the beginning, it grew and grew -- so I'm well aware of the plot-holes dotted around, and the some of the ending is... unsatisfactory. It became a challenge and a chore to get it done, and while the very end of the final chapter is good enough for me to be content with going on with, the rest handful of chapters pains me.
At some point while writing 'Reclaiming', I branched off to begin 'A Small World', featuring some minor NPCs from the game. I've recently decided that, of all the continuing tales I'm working on, this is the one I'm probably most happy about consistently. The first chapter is perhaps the weakest, I think, but I surprised myself while writing it because I realised that I could actually use humour, sometimes :) Not often, admittedly, but... still :) So, I am quite proud of this one.
Another branch swept me away to begin 'Hopelessly Ever After', because of my utter enchantment with the Xan NPC mod for BG2, but the beautiful and talented Kulyok. I can't even hope to do justice to her work, but it's a shrine and testament to the love she made me feel for that particular character, and though it's lost its way in recent chapters, I'm sure I'll pull it from its dormancy and get it back into the swing of things.
And my final 'in progress' piece, for now, is 'Making the Means' -- a gloriously indulgent exercise for me to control a more selfish and morally questionable protagonist, unaware of her heritage, and more concerned with her own advancement and future than anything else. It'll take some liberties with the story as it's known, but hopefully it'll be worth it.
My other one-shots were written for various reasons -- dares, moments of inspiration, general plot bunnies. Bree's 'After Ascending' is, technically, 'in progress', but it could as easily be labeled as complete -- whether or not I find another scenario for her, to add to the collection, is unknown. I'll give it a few months, and if nothing comes to mind, then I'll just add it to the completed pile.
And so, to works I want to do, but lack the time to promise to get around to. The Throne of Bhaal section (and final part) to Maiyn's story does, of course, take priority. I've also finished playing around with the rather wonderful Angelo NPC mod for BG2 -- and I'm desperately itching to write something based from that, but am well aware that I couldn't do it the justice it deserves. The whole concept, though, is... intriguing, and I'm finding that well modeled mods fuel my creativity when I'm experiencing dry patches (as seen by Kulyok's Xan for BG2 and the Coran and Xan Romances for BG). I've wanted to expand on my Montaron and Xzar backstory for an age, though I'm not sure if that'll ever happen. Making a Monty-For-BG2-Mod is also appealing, but even less likely...
And if you've made it this far, you probably deserve a cookie. Or some information about me, maybe? Hmm. Well, I'm in my twenties, I'm most decidedly female, and I'm thoroughly Scottish. I work in the field of health-care and sciences, I'm easily distracted, and I really do wonder what I'll do when the magic of Baldur's Gate eventually manages to disappear from my life...
... I'll probably just turn up in another section for another game, I guess :)
