Hello :D I'm VraieEsprit (which is french for True Spirit...sort of!) and I'm 27 years old. I'm female, British and I spend way too much time writing! I work as a library assistant/computer tech in a reference library in rural England, and I'm also something of a language obsessive, as well as a music nut and a fan of visiting new places and meeting new people :D And, I'm afraid, a confirmed nonsense babbler. (hides). Although I haven't (yet) written any fanfic for any of them, I'm a big fan of the neoroma three (four?) series (HaruToki, NeoAnge/Angelique, Kiniro no Koruda) as well as of several seiyuu and my personal pet series, Sotsugyou M (which SO needs to be printed in English, seriously! It's way too neglected!). So far however I have only written fanfiction for three anime/manga series. Tenchi Muyou, Fushigi Yuugi, and Bleach. (Well, I have written random SotsuM stuff, buuuut FFnet doesn't have a category for it.)

Brief notes about my fanfiction (General stuff)
I try to keep in character, wherever possible. Of course, this is based on my interpretations of characters, so bias is included. But even so, I do my best to make them sound like themselves. If something exists in terms of a backstory, I try to work with it. In absence of a backstory, I make up my own. Characters do not exist without backstories in my mind's eye - it's just not possible to write them as they are without knowing how they got to that point. (This may make for occasional deviations, expansions, whatever...especially if a character has been imported into a continuity.)

I do not write slash fiction, or x-rated fiction. I have no issue with the concept or that people do. I just don't do it. It's not my style ;)

I do mish-mash universes and plots together if and when I feel necessary, and sometimes deviate from accepted canon to better fit an idea I have. That's just fanfic for you - sorry about that ;) I'm generally quite well behaved with continuity and canon, but anyone who's read my Tenchi arc will understand what I'm talking about ;)

The biggest thing that drives me is character interaction, development and regression. I'm not in it for the big fight scene unless that fight scene has a specific purpose to the plot.

Regarding Japanese terminology, use of Kanji, etc in my stories: Yes, I do speak Japanese. I'm not a hundred percent fluent, but I can speak it enough to read manga, listen to drama CDs, transcribe songs, watch anime and play games without needing subtitles or translations. That fact does not make me an expert on Japanese culture, so I reserve the right to accidentally impose my Western-ness on my writing lol.

I wrote the Tenchi arc from a very English perspective, since I remember watching it in English as a teenager and I kept that style all through. Everything since then has been much more from a Japanese perspective, with correctly ordered names, properly romanised syllables, etc. On occasion kanji might be referenced in the story and most of my created character names in the Fushigi Yuugi and Bleach stories were chosen with a specific kanji/meaning in mind. This is because I'm a geek. And it helps me remember kanji. Some of the Tenchi characters also had names chosen this way, but not all of them ;)

Because I have watched/read Yuugi and Bleach (and most other anime/manga I follow) in Japanese, I don't always know the accepted English translation words for things. And mostly when I do know them, I prefer not to use them. I dislike Soul Reaper since Shinigami doesn't mean either soul or reaper, for example. Where facts may have been changed in the English translations, I've referred back to the Japanese to find out what the correct version is so far as possible (for example, the placing of Makkan-mura in Hokkan not Sairou, as per the original Yuugi manga chapter in Japanese).

However occasionally I do tweak kanji to fit my purpose. Not often, but sometimes. _. But the Japanese are good at doing that too - so it's all right, surely? :D Right??

The Tenchi Fic Arc: (Dark Heart - Operation Eradicate, plus...)

I'm a big fan of Tenchi Muyo, in all the incarnations (in fact, everything except OVA 3 is good with me so far!). I'm not a purist (as you can tell, LOL, if you read anything I've written).

Tenchi Universe is probably my favourite continuation, because it puts emphasis on character interaction over huge swathes of information, so everything that I have written to date is based on a Tenchi Universe framework. If you want to think of what I write as AU Tenchi Fic, that's fine by me :)

I realise a lot of Tenchi fans write OVA continuity fanfiction - but I'm not one of them. Therefore, to clarify, this is the timeline where it is Washu who is trapped in the cave for 700 years, where there is no existing link between Tsunami and Sasami and where Kagato is a renegade Prince of Jurai. It's also the timeline where Tenchi is kidnapped by Haruna and where GXP Headquarters is destroyed by the rampaging criminal Kain.

Having said all of that, a LOT of my stories to date combine OVA (or other series) themes/characters into the Universe timeline/framework. Confused yet? Believe me, sometimes I am ;) To date, many concepts from the other Tenchi continuities and spinoffs made fleeting or lasting appearances in my work (albeit with modifications where necessary to fit the TU universal rules). (Seiryo Tennan has surprisingly become a fairly regular and in demand member of the cast, in fact, which I truly didn't expect at all when I first threw him into the fray.) As I said, I think I'm moving towards AU - but so long as you remember the basic foundation and framework is Tenchi Universe, it should still all make perfect sense.

To save anyone's confusion, the stories that belong in my continuity run in this order:

Dark Heart (part 1 and 2)
Dying Tree (part 1 and 2)
Hawk of Jurai (part 1, 2 and 3)
The Dead Sea
Demon's Exile (part 1 and 2)
Kindred
Tainted Spirit (part 1, 2 and 3)
Eagle's Prayer (part 1 and 2)
Operation Eradicate (part 1 and 2)

The "After The Rain" stories also fit into this continuity of mine, but are prequels, set back before Ryoko is born. They are essentially Washu and Kagato prequels (no, not Washu x Kagato! I promise! Too too scary!), and chronicle Washu's relationship with Mikamo as well as Kagato's desire for power.

Autumn of Life is separate, although the events chronicled in it MIGHT easily have happened in my other continuity (and I think at one point in Dead Sea Nagi does refer to events from Autumn of Life ever so briefly). It's meant as a "missing episode" filler, to slot between No Need For Ryoko and the end of the series - basically, what happened to Ryoko while Tenchi was fighting Kagato, and what happened between Tenchi's victory and that meeting beneath the sakura.

I'm a huge fan of Ryoko since she reminds me in many ways of characters from my other beloved fandom Jem and it was she who drew me into Tenchi in the first place. I'm also a big fan of Washu-chan and Sasami, which is probably obvious if you've read any of my writing. I much prefer the Tenchi cast with Kiyone rather than without, which is another reason for my Tenchi Universe backdrop. (I actually enjoy writing Washu most of all of the Tenchi characters - followed closely by Seiryo, Tokimi, and then probably Sasami and Ryoko - go figure...)

If you got this far, huge kudos and a chocolate biscuit to you :)

And additionally, a big thankyou to the people who keep reading and reviewing my Tenchi fanfic even though I've not added anything new to the TM! arc for over a year. To continue to have that support means a lot to me, and I'm very humbled by the continued attention and feedback my stories receive. Arigatou gozaimasu, minna-san :) Hontou ni kansha shimashita!

Fushigi Yuugi: Shichikon Den (The Legend of the Seven Souls)

Yay , my first tumble into shoujo writing :) And in tackily imitating the novel title style...I have no shame, truly...

Regarding Shichikon Den - It's set after the end of volume 18 of the manga, or in anime terms, after OVA 2 (although for continuity purposes it's probably more accurately a manga continuation, in terms of little details. The basic gist is the same, however.) Maybe I'm mish-mashing again - I have sort of a reputation for that already, with the Tenchi fic...blah ;)

Fushigi Yuugi: The Shinzahou Chronicles
This is a bit of fun on my part - as much as I am ever frivolous with anything I write (I tend to be hypercritical and take it all way too seriously at times, sigh...)

The Shinzahou Chronicles are basically about Sukunami Hikari, that baby born at the end of Eikouden. Except she's all grown up now...of course. Convention suggests her blank-slate character lays her open to be mary-sued up to the skies. So I wanted to write something where she's not a perfect little heroine. Hopefully so far I'm succeeding.

Of course, the story isn't just about Hikari, that'd be boring. It's not entirely about Kounan, either.

A large part of the story is really about Kutou and in particular the Emperor's ongoing struggle to bring peace to his land. We never really did see what kind of nation the East rebuilt itself into after Nakago's defeat, or how the Seiryuu Seishi or the final battle were viewed by the native peoples. But the Kutou we get images of from Amiboshi in the manga, and also the depictions of them as a fighting, occasionally genocidal power suggests they're a nation with a lot of issues to settle. We do also know that Yui entered Kutou far too soon - that either she, or Nakago, or both managed somehow to force the legend to play alongside Suzaku's legend...at a time when it should never have happened.

So, the Shichi Seishi for Seiryuu are dead or in exile, and there is no Seiryuu no Miko. And without these...Kutou remains in turmoil.

And so, Hikari's story begins :D

Bleach:

Rain Dragon is now complete on the server. Thank you to everyone who supported and critiqued and played along with it as it was running because I had a lot of fun writing it. There won't be a sequel - essentially the sequel is the canon Arrancar arc, so that's that. But for my first fic over 100 reviews, I've learnt 2 things. One, that Bleach fans are demanding. And two, that they're not shy with lending their support. Minna-san, arigatou gozaimasu. I'm still blown away by how the review count keeps going up XD

Meifu's Gate: Prequel, Second Manuscript, Third Chronicle

Yeah, we're still going. I swear, I never thought I'd write so much about Juu and Shun or come to be as attached to the little monsters as much as I've become (though I always liked them a lot as characters!). Obviously Third Chronicle is ongoing as we speak. I expect it to be the last volume of the Juu and Shun adventures - but before people hit me, it will be a long one. I'm already writing Chapter 43 as we speak, so...>Please also bear in mind that I am NOT taking any notice of the filler anime zanpakutou arc during the writing of this story. My fic is strictly limited to manga references only (although I can't guarantee it won't go AUish because of the constantly updating information about said swords in the actual canon storyline).

Oneshots: I never write oneshots. But I've written three for Bleach. Mind you I also never write ongoing storylines, and I'm writing for Bleach...so...meh. Whatever :P The oneshots feature Kira and Momo (posted before the most recent manga appearance of Momo was published) and Ukitake and Byakuya (re Byakuya's childhood...candy, towels and wooden swords...heh). The most recent is a oneshot for my favourite Vaizard, Ootoribashi "Rose" Roujuurou, who is truly awesome and should get more appreciation from Bleach fans. (I've toyed with the idea of making him my next fanfic project, but I'm hesitating at the moment because I'm nooot quite sure how people would take my interpretation xD)

BETA status

I've been asked to Beta before but it's not something I'm generally in the habit of doing. There are a few reasons - one is lack of time, another is that if I'm writing for a continuity, I don't feel I should have access to other people's works during the creative process. But the biggest reason is that fanfiction comes from the writer's heart, not from their head. And you have to be a particularly skilled kind of Beta not to accidentally sever that connection and impose your way of seeing someone else's story on them. Also, if you're Beta for someone else, they're putting a tremendous amount of trust in your ability to do a reliable job. I'm not confident that that's a skill I possess, so for the time being, I'm not active as a Beta.

--Updates-

~Sept 2009

Hakuinden
~On hiatus~. Yes, again. Unfortunately I don't have the will or inspiration to finish it at the moment. My time is limited, and since people are actively reading Meifu's Gate, it gets priority over anything else I might be working on. I doubt now it will ever be finished - I may take it off the server completely in the next few months. I hate having an unfinished fic, but this one has kinda...washed away.

Meifu's Gate Third Chronicle continues to be updated. I'm at the moment returning to the 2nd Manuscript schedule of updating on a Tuesday and a Saturday but if I get caught up with myself writing that will change. Thank you to everyone who has supported Meifu from the start and who continue to support it. I've chatted to so many awesome Juu and Shun fans since I began it and I'm really glad I did!

I've been asked if I take requests for fics - which is something I sadly don't have time to do. I have many animes and shows I love but very few I ever begin to write for, because I always want to know the characters thoroughly before I put fingers to keys. Bleach aside, I don't write for ongoing continuities...I don't know what's with the Bleach thing, but meh.

For the time being, I just tend to write whatever randomness comes into my head - sorry about that (though I'm muchly flattered by the question!)

FFnet current stats:

Total words archived: 3,517,417 words (I am not kidding...I promise, go count them, if you don't believe me!)

So now we're working towards the 4 million mark. Hrm. I wonder how long that will take me...O.o

(Stats are stories in all categories since 15 August 2006):

Phew. This is turning into a loong profile...:S Can you have chapters in your profile??

Thought (s) for the month:

Follow your dreams. If you don't, nobody will follow them for you.
