Hello :D I'm VraieEsprit (which is french for True Spirit...sort of!). At long last I'm updating my profile! I'm English by birth and a fanatic of languages, particularly Japanese but also French. I'm also very much a fan of old history - old being mediaeval for the most part, covering this country but also Japanese history of the Heian period. I am a huge geek about the Genpei war and its samurai clans, in particular the Taira. I guess my historical and linguistic obsessions sort of reflect in my writing a bit, and the subjects I choose to focus on. So far I've written fic about three fandoms - Tenchi Muyou, Fushigi Yuugi and Bleach. I recently completed my MA in Japanese Studies with Distinction =D and have lately begun studying Mandarin Chinese.

Regarding Japanese terminology, use of Kanji, etc in my stories:

It's weird reading back on some of my fic (aside from cringing, because I do do that when I read back over old stuff and I have no idea how you guys tolerate it. You're all too nice to me...). I can see the development in my Japanese understanding, from Tenchi through to Meifu. There are translit and grammar errors littered in earlier stories. I won't tell you what or where >.>. If you're knowledgeable enough to know them for yourself, please be kind and don't point them out xD. My Japanese now is fairly fluent, but you know, we all began somewhere.

However, I'm a strong believer of trying to be authentic to some degree in fic. My understanding and knowledge of Japanese culture and history is broadening, but I will hold up my hands and say clearly that I know more about Heian and Kamakura Japan than I do anything from the last hundred years. So this is fine when dealing with ancient topics, but perhaps not so good when dealing with more recent ones.

That said, manga has taught me that names in Japanese have meaning. Therefore many of my characters have names with specifically chosen meanings. I love Kanji. I like to share it with people as much as possible xD.

My fanfiction topics:

The Tenchi Fic Arc: (Dark Heart - Operation Eradicate, plus...)

My Tenchi fic is based on the Universe series, but it largely AU in the sense that elements from other continuities have been wound into the plot to make them all one big world. There are a lot of people who say only the OVA matters, and that's their free choice to think or feel, but I think it's a shame to ignore the other elements of the Tenchiverse. Therefore my Tenchi arc kinda happened - mostly because I'm of the opinion that most OVA concepts fit fine into the TU framework xD. It kinda became something bigger than I imagined though, and spawned a whole bunch of stories.

To save anyone's confusion, the stories that belong in my continuity run in this order:

Dark Heart (part 1 and 2)
Dying Tree (part 1 and 2)
Hawk of Jurai (part 1, 2 and 3)
The Dead Sea
Demon's Exile (part 1 and 2)
Kindred
Tainted Spirit (part 1, 2 and 3)
Eagle's Prayer (part 1 and 2)
Operation Eradicate (part 1 and 2)

The "After The Rain" stories also fit into this continuity of mine, but are prequels, set back before Ryoko is born. They are essentially Washu and Kagato prequels (no, not Washu x Kagato! I promise! Too too scary!), and chronicle Washu's relationship with Mikamo as well as Kagato's desire for power.

Autumn of Life is separate, although the events chronicled in it MIGHT easily have happened in my other continuity (and I think at one point in Dead Sea Nagi does refer to events from Autumn of Life ever so briefly). It's meant as a "missing episode" filler, to slot between No Need For Ryoko and the end of the series - basically, what happened to Ryoko while Tenchi was fighting Kagato, and what happened between Tenchi's victory and that meeting beneath the sakura.

I haven't written Tenchi in a long time, but I still have a lot of special thought for that series. And also the people who supported my Tenchiverse. Some of them were quite quite mad. But quite quite lovely, too.

Fushigi Yuugi: Shichikon Den & Sankagetsu Den

These two stories are about the original seishi. ShichikonDen happens at the end of the manga continuity and includes the characters and so on from the novels Sanbouden (because I like Anzu with Tasuki). It is about Chichiri and Tasuki trying to establish a normal post Seishi life but also about the four dead seishi who want to be reborn but aren't finding it easy. There's no Miaka or Tamahome in this fic. Sorry about that - sometimes you just need a break from the "Miaka...Tamahome..." of it all.

SankagetsuDen fills the three months that Miaka was in her own world after going to Taiitsukun the first time. It also chronicles what Tasuki and the others were doing leading up to meeting Miaka, as well as Nakago. Again, Miaka is not in this story, though Tamahome obviously is.

Fushigi Yuugi: The Shinzahou Chronicles

I always feel sorry for Kutou, so this story happened. It's the story of Hikari, Miaka's daughter (yes, I know, it's meant to be a son. But Hikari is always gonna be a girl to me. And being a girl...means she can enter the ShijinTenchisho. It isn't a typical Miko story, though it crosses all four lands and involves brushes with all four Gods. The idea? To finally save the Kutou Yui abandoned, and bring peace to the final kingdom.

Fushigi Yuugi: Hakuinden
Hakuinden is the story of Byakko's legend, both past and future. It's the one legend that Watase Yuu hasn't fully covered yet, but it is not simply Suzuno's story but another story as well. I haven't finished it and it's been a long time, but part one is complete on the server and part two I've recently found the files for, so I will try and get them all converted and uploaded to the server within the not too distant future. I've been back on the Yuugi curve recently, so I may even manage to write some more. If I can find the time >

Bleach:

Rain Dragon is now complete on the server. Thank you to everyone who supported and critiqued and played along with it as it was running because I had a lot of fun writing it. There won't be a sequel - essentially the sequel is the canon Arrancar arc, so that's that. But for my first fic over 100 reviews, I've learnt 2 things. One, that Bleach fans are demanding. And two, that they're not shy with lending their support. Minna-san, arigatou gozaimasu. I'm still blown away by how the review count keeps going up XD

Meifu's Gate: Prequel, Second Manuscript, Third Chronicle, Fourth Maki

21st January, 2012: As I think you all know by now, the Meifu arc of Bleachfic is finally at an end. The number of emotions that Team Stupid have gone through, their trials and tribulations and their evolutions as characters has been thanks to the people supporting them by reading about them and commenting on them every week. I can also reveal that Ryuu - awkward, antisocial, stiff-backed little Ryuu-chan - has elicited the most votes in the Meifu poll (which was a big reason why the Kuchiki were the focus of Fourth Maki). I've enjoyed writing a possible past for Juu and Shun and their friends and acquaintances and I hope everyone reading has enjoyed it too - and will continue to enjoy it from hereon in.

Sukuse

Twenty five years after Juu and Shun graduate from the Academy, they're both Captains in the Gotei and an integral part of shinigami authority. However, this is a Seireitei still under evolution and development, and there are still shadows lurking waiting to smash those developments into the ground. After mass-murder in the newly established Spiritless Zone in Rukongai, it's clear that something sinister is moving behind the scenes, but can Juu, Shun and their comrades get to the bottom of it before anyone else has to die? With traitors in shihakushou, demons in the dark hollows of the wasteland Rukon, and the secrets of twenty five years earlier all crowding in on them, its a big ask for Team Stupid this time around.

So I wanted to write a Gotei story with the Meifu characters and pretty much all of those who survived Meifu are in this fic. Some of the more minor characters who were children in the Meifu stories have also grown up and emerged into this story. It's a different kind of story from Meifu, because it's a Gotei fic not an Academy fic...and its focus will probably centre largely on and around Thirteenth Division. Shunsui will still play a key role, however, as will individuals from other squads ;)

Mirror, Flower, Water, Moon: Sousuke's Story

As the title suggests, this is a prequel about the kind of background Aizen may have come from. I have no real clue why I was inspired to write it, just that I was. And so I did. I guess he's kind of like that O.o. He's sort of creepy though. Some of the things alluded to in this story do carry Meifu resonance...especially in terms of Sukuse, actually ;)

Rose, Kira, and Artistic Licence

So after manga chapter 494, I had the urge to write about Rose and Kira. How they may have met. What kind of interaction they had. All the things that Kubo hasn't given us and possibly (probably) never will. I love Rose and Kira both as characters, and Rose especially has far too little attention. This isn't a slashy fic - it's about two characters making adjustments, dealing with the past and facing up to the future.

I still have fleeting urges to write about Rose, Aizen and Lisa. I have always had very specific ideas about Rose, just based on the basic fleeting bits of information in the manga, because despite his rare appearances, the character information is quite telling. When Rose appeared in 495, a lot of people expressed surprise about his demeanour, but I was just ecstatic since Kubo wrote him exactly as I hoped he would write him. It made me think maybe my ideas about Rose were not entirely my own imagining and a good deal based in canon, and that made me all the more eager to write about him. BUT I don't know if and when I will have time or energy for such a project...so right now, no promises. In the meantime, Artistic Licence is an open story and I may or may not add to it as time goes on.

Oneshots: I never write oneshots. But I've written three for Bleach. Mind you I also never write ongoing storylines, and I'm writing for Bleach...so...meh. Whatever :P The oneshots feature Kira and Momo (posted before the FKKT arc appearance of Momo happened in the manga, so set between Aizen's betrayal and those battles) and Ukitake and Byakuya (re Byakuya's childhood...candy, towels and wooden swords...heh). Then there's a Rose one, because as you might have gathered, I love Rose. And some weird thing about the Ninth which was my attempt to write about Kensei. For some reason I can't write about Kensei. Instead, it turned into a pantheon of Vice Captains and some random oddness. But I uploaded it anyhow...so people can have a good laugh at my terrible sense of humour and my picking on the Bleach Characters. Especially Hisagi. I do like picking on him ;)

BETA status

I've been asked to Beta before but it's not something I'm generally in the habit of doing. There are a few reasons - one is lack of time, another is that if I'm writing for a continuity, I don't feel I should have access to other people's works during the creative process. But the biggest reason is that fanfiction comes from the writer's heart, not from their head. And you have to be a particularly skilled kind of Beta not to accidentally sever that connection and impose your way of seeing someone else's story on them. Also, if you're Beta for someone else, they're putting a tremendous amount of trust in your ability to do a reliable job. I'm not confident that that's a skill I possess, so for the time being, I'm not active as a Beta.

--Updates-

December 2012

Hakuinden
Erm. Blank. I will find the rest of this again. Really, I will. I will. O.O.

Sukuse
-In the process of being uploaded. I'm about five chapters ahead of what I've been uploading. I expect this to be the last story I write about Juu and Shun's history, being that the manga has now taken things in a different direction and made the Meifu world somewhat AU.

I've been asked if I take requests for fics - which is something I sadly don't have time to do. I have many animes and shows I love but very few I ever begin to write for, because I always want to know the characters thoroughly before I put fingers to keys. Bleach aside, I don't write for ongoing continuities...I don't know what's with the Bleach thing, but meh.

For the time being, I just tend to write whatever randomness comes into my head - sorry about that (though I'm muchly flattered by the question!). I also don't collaborate on fic projects, simply because...I'm very bad at it >

FFnet current stats:

Total words archived= 5,043,291 words(This up to about 2011, I don't know how to get the cumulative figure any more, anyone help?)
