Favorite Musicals:
1. RENT-My musical obsession really started after I watched RENT. This is such a poignant and touching show, the kind of show every person can relate to. And its hilarious moments are just that-downright hilarious. I've seen both the show and the movie and have tickets to see it with Adam Pascal and Anthony Rapp next year.
2. Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street-Most of my friends, upon finding out that I liked this show, were like "WTF?" It's completely the opposite of most things I enjoy in life--yet, somehow, it's one of my favorites of all time. It's so sad, and so intriguing, and has some of the downright best music of any show I've ever seen. Mrs. Lovett is my dream role, I'm so much like her (except the whole pie thing). I've seen the movie and a taped version of the show. (Len Cariou>George Hearn>Johnny Depp, though Johnny's 'Epiphany' pwns ALL)
3. Wicked-Initially, I hated this show. It was so--shallow--compared to the book, so many of the political and theological themes removed, and Galinda was the symbol of everything I hated (pretty, popular, gets all the guys, disses smart people). But then--I don't know, something changed. I think "No Good Deed" had something to do with it. I love that song. It's so how I used to look at life. And Defying Gravity kicks serious butt too. Plus, I relate a lot to Elphaba, and "What Is This Feeling" is my angry song. :-) I have never seen this show
4. Hairspray-A light, happy show with much less tragedy than most of my choices, it's always what I watch when I'm feeling down. Tracy's optimism can cheer ANYONE up. Also, Link and Corny are two seriously cute guys (though somewhat egotistical). I have seen the recent movie only.
5. Cats-Though the plot of Cats isn't as extensive and complicated as those of other shows, it is truly an exhibition of theatrical skills. The songs, dances, costumes, special effects...all of these are AMAZING. My favorite cat hands down is Mr. Mistoffelees, his song is just SO CATCHY! I have seen the show and the movie (on Youtube,) and want to read the book.
6. Chicago-Sexy, funny, and with an overall theme of girls pwning guys, what girl-power girl doesn't love Chicago? Anyone who's ever dreamed of fame and fortune can completely relate to Roxie Hart. And need I even go into the awesomeness of The Cell Block Tango? I have seen the movie only.
7. Grease-I'm a little tempted to put this higher on the list. It's another good funny musical, and it's one that my entire family loves (unlike certain others on this list). The songs are cool (Summer Nights is a classic,) the high-school setting allows kids to click with this play, and John Travolta looks great in leather. Plus, who can't love Frenchy's classic line: "Boys are rats, Sandy. No, they're worse than rats. They're fleas on rats. No--amoebas on fleas on rats." I have seen the movie and the show.
8. High School Musical-This deserves a place on this list because I was obsessed with it for about a year. I think my love of this show came from my ability to relate to Gabriella. (though I'm not a Mary Sue as I now believe she is). I have been in her place--the smart, nerdy girl trying to get into singing despite the scorn of the more talented singers. Also, Mrs. Darbus is downright hilarious. I have seen both movies and the show.
9. The Producers-Another good funny one. Who doesn't love Roger Debris and his amazing "Keep It Gay"? This is one of the funniest movies I've ever seen, and the show is one I definitely want to see. Also, Roger Bart is an amazing Carmen Ghia and who knew it--Will Ferrel can sing! I have seen the movie only.
10. Little Shop of Horrors-This is on here only because I want to see the show. I didn't think the movie was that great--the happy ending instead of the plant eating everyone? Come on! But this show has its perks--the character of Orin and his song (Dentist!), the original ending from the show (Don't Feed the Plants,) and what is in my opinion the funniest love song ever (Suddenly Seymour). I have seen the movie only.
11. The Wizard of Oz-I'm not as into this show, but it deserves a place on this list for one reason: it is the first and only musical I have performed in. I was Munchkin Mayor/Winkie in a local performance, and got to dress up as a boy and actually had lines! It was awesome. This show has a special place in my heart even though I prefer Wicked.
And now, just so this profile can get even longer (not that anyone will actually read this far...) I present another list
Favorite Songs from Musicals
1. What You Own-(RENT)-This is like, the theme song for our world today. It's so true, and it manages to carry a powerful anti-consumerism message while furthering the plot of the story and allowing us (in the movie) to watch Adam Pascal belt on some rocks in Santa Fe. How can you get better?
2. No Good Deed-(Wicked) For a long time, this was how I looked at life. This is such a powerful song, and I absolutely love it. Idina Menzel sounds AMAZING singing this song, and my favorite line has to be "One question haunts and hurts, too much, too much to mention. Was I really seeking good, or just seeking attention?"
(Profile under construction. More to come).
