Little Rant About Fandom: Yes, I am aware that I'm not a very active writing member of the Naruto (or any anime for that matter) fandom but I like to read good fanfiction - especially when I should be studying for the final semester exams. But something keeps bugging me and has been doing so more and more those past few weeks:
Why is there an overwhelming amount of High School Fiction?
I know how intriguing it is to put characters into a different environment and see how they turn out. I also know that this particular universe holds many possibilities that the canon universe doesn't and so it's especially attractive for fanfiction writers. I also know that it's easier to write about things you know than to risk making mistakes in a universe that you cannot be entirely familiar with because you simply didn't create it.
But still - if people only abuse this universe because they're too lazy to make an effort and think about how Kishimoto's universe would probably work (and note the 'probably' since none of us can ever know) then they should just try and find another fandom were the universe is perfectly similar to our. I don't want to bash High School Fiction in general; I've read quite some of those stories and there are people out there who can pull it of wonderfully because they have a reason to put the story in this particular universe and that's fine with me. That is how it works, or is supposed to work.
But, please, people, try to work with the universe things are happening in if it doesn't interfere with your plot idea. Only because you use a nightclub in your story doesn't mean you have to put it in our universe. Maybe instead of a coffe shop as setting you could use a Konoha teahouse. My point is - don't think that the canon universe doesn't leave you room for character development or interpretation. Because it does. And if that's not enough room, you can still make it AU within the ninja universe itself.
And if that doesn't work either, then at least make an effort to put the whole story in a Japanese high school because that's where the characters and their backgrounds work. Use the culture to give your story charm and to make it interesting and convincing for us. Look up when people in Japan are allowed to drink and to drive, what sort of food they usually eat for their meals, how they behave and how the society works.
Since in the end it all comes down to the fact that you are more or less "imposing" your writing on other people. You have a certain amount of responsibility to do your best because if you don't, then what is the purpose of your writing? Either you want to make your story entertaining for other people and therefore should do your best; or you write it to improve your own skills and don't want to let it rot on your platform, and then you should work as hard as you can because only that way you will get better. Writing is not only the actual process of writing things down - it also involves thinking and research and a lot of patience.
So if you claim to be a writer, behave like one. That's what I needed to get of my chest.
Age: 19
Nationality: German
Reasons for Writing in English: Non-existence of German anime fandoms. Horrible, I can tell you.
STORIES SECTION
-alphabetical order after pairing-
KibaSaku (Naruto)
- Naughty Girl (M)
- Bad Company (T)
To tell you the truth, I never intended to write more than one KibaSaku story, and I especially didn't think I'd ever write a multi-chaptered one, no matter how short. But since Karma always has a way to bite you in the behind it turned out like this.
Kouzumi (Digimon Frontier)
- Losing (K+)
- Lone Wolf (K+)
- The Art of Getting Dumped (T)
I've watched the anime in the German version when I was younger and this pairing kind of grew on me. I watched an episode some time ago for fun (after I had long been sucked into the ninja universe) and only laughed because everything was so badly made in comparison to Naruto. But the fics I wrote here were to test the waters - to see if I was capable of writing in English. Turned out people liked them and I'm forever loving these stories for it.
SaiSaku (Naruto)
- Artist's Fingers
Not my most favourite pairing, but amusing and interesting to read once in a while. The story was a spur of the moment thing and practically written in one day, so I'm still surprised that it's so much liked around here. Kind of a challenge to make unfeeling Sai feel.
SasuSaku (Naruto)
- Apostasy (M)
I thought this would be the first pairing I'd ever write but found it to be more complicated and deep than I ever thought and got scared. I respect authors who can pull this off convincingly very much and since I don't trust myself to really explore this pairing (yet?), this very short one-shot is all you get for now.
ShikaSaku (Naruto)
- Turning Blue (K)
- Breaking Down (T)
Another crack pairing, but for me personally, those are easier to write than the canon ones. Reading order: Turning Blue -> Breaking Down (Sequel).
