Notes: Obviously in 2007 I really started having trouble meeting my goals here. I'm really sorry to keep people waiting. Don't worry though, I have definitely not abandoned this story. I haven't even gotten to the meat of the story yet. 2007 just was not a good year for me in any stretch of the imagination. My father was diagnosed with a terminal cancer not long after I finished training for the MS 150. That was a difficult period to get through, so it's been rough staying focussed. Dad passed on February 26th, 10 days after his 78th birthday. I'm not looking for sympathy here, or making excuses. But obviously now I'm still sort of regrouping.
I have high hopes for 2008 though. A lot of good things have already happened, and I hope that trend will continue too. I have set a goal to write at least 500 words on Chasing the Trail every day. That ought to keep it progressing along even if it's only a bit at a time. For a while there, I haven't been meeting that even, but I have actively been working on it. I did manage to Win at NaNoWriMo despite my Father being ill. So Now I just need to get re-focussed. I know where this chapter needs to go, I just need to get it down and then things should move a little better for me.
Note on Edward X Winry as canon: ≈≈note this will contain some spoilers≈≈ I am always surprised when someone claims that Edward/Winry is ~not~ canon, because to me it pretty obviously is. More in the Manga than the anime. He won't let her sully her hands with Scar's death. Why? because he loves her. Meanwhile she notices that his 'back is big' i.e. he's grown, his shoulders are broad, and she's wondering when he became a man. Riza even sees it and says it straight to his face. His reaction is priceless, but obvious. And in the anime too, his actions speak louder than words... and the way his expression softens around her... He tries to deny it for years... a little TOO vigorously to believe he doesn't have any interest. In the movie, Alphonse tried to use Winry as an argument against Edward leaving again. "What about Winry? She misses you too you know?" He hesitates... his smile is wistful... "She always did make the best," as if to try to make light of his own heartbreak. Meanwhile she is weeping because he's not going to allow her to wait any longer... he's planning to leave for ever this time, and she can't do anything about it. By the time Alphonse regains his body, he is 6 years Winry's junior... So while it wouldn't be impossible for him to hook up with her, it's unlikely that she would consider him, or for that matter would he have as much interest in her as an adult. So even if Edward had decided to stand aside for Alphonse (despite his own feelings) if he wanted to pursue Winry, he wouldn't have to do it for long before it was clear Alphonse wasn't interested. At that point I think it's obvious that the age difference would make Alphonse more interested in a girl closer to his own age. So I think once Al had his own serious girlfriend, to me it's obvious that the way is clear for Edward to speak his mind, and he would. I really have a hard time understanding how anyone could think it was NOT canon.
