My Forums:
I have two forums, Can We Talk? and The X Box.
Can We Talk? is the Conservative playground, at which all are welcome. We have two RPGs on at the moment, and a poll on the rights and responsibilities of a moderator. Many of us love LOTR, but aficionados of other fandoms are also welcome. We're a friendly bunch, even though some of us take a stern view on the quality of writing on this site, and we will not be mean or rude to people who do not share our views, as long as you are civil. We also have a thread for arguing and for resolving stuff, though I prefer not to argue at all. I do not want the content there going over Disney level, so the profanity filter is on.
The X Box is the Liberal playground, at which talk of darkfics, slash and contentious issues is welcome. We have several topics for debates, and a poll on the limits on adult or M-rated fiction. We also have a topic called The Skip, in which you can complain about your problems - and maybe get a bit of sympathy. Since this is the Liberal playground, those with Conservative views need to respect the needs of the other contributors to express themselves as they see fit. Their ideas may be different to yours, but they are just as valid. Please agree to disagree on contentious issues - let's not stifle the other contributors just because we feel strongly about certain things. The profanity filter is off, but let's not argue about stuff, unless we are debating.
Since I edit and delete those posts that pull the thread off-topic, are inflammatory or are grossly disrespectful of my wishes, please read the rules of each forum before posting for the first time. Thank you.
My preferences:
I like LOTR/Silmarillion fics. My especial favourites are canon-based, but my horizons have been broadened by various writers who have replied to my reviews. These good people have encouraged me to look beyond my own ideas and see what else is out there. I'm glad I did. This is the best fan fiction site I have seen on the web. There are so many good stories - and when I have tried out the kind of stuff I would usually avoid, I have been pleasantly surprised. The best stories I have found, some of which are from other fandoms, have been added to my C2, "My Favourite Tales," and to my favourite author and stories lists.
I must confess I'm not a fan of slash, but then I'm not so keen on liquorice or root beer either.
My attitudes to reviews and reviewing:
Constructive criticism for my own work is gratefully accepted. There are several forums on this site that offer beta services, including this one, this one, and this one. While I usually disapprove of flaming, I can understand why some people do it. I hope that, by providing links to helpful people, I can help to reduce the number of flames that writers like me sometimes experience because their spelling and grammar need improvement. The Furnace is another excellent site for writers. It's the one I refer to the most for my own writing. It's run by Flame Rising, who, although he is one of the most prolific flamers on this site, is actually quite a reasonable chap once you get to know him.
From time to time I will review, and be as fair as possible. I'm often very liberal with genuine, heartfelt praise, but that is for well-written stories that deserve it. They often end up on my C2 or on my favourites list. However, sometimes being fair does not mean being sweet and fluffy. Oh no, it occasionally means flaming. Now, unlike some other flamers, I do not use profanities, I tell you what the problem is and I offer you solutions and a right to reply. And how do ungrateful "flamees" repay me for my (apparently cruel) kindness? They leave pitiful revenge flames because I don't hide behind another account and flame from that.
I flame from this one to show you the quality of my work, and to prove I'm not some kind of hypocrite. I actually know how it feels to be flamed, and because of that, I learned to write decent stories instead of the dreck that earned me those nasty flames that are worse than anything I would dish out. That's right, people, there are worse flamers than I am on this site. Actually, I'm friends with them now.
I have a policy for dealing with ungrateful flamees: I put their profile on alert so I will know if they post anything else, and if they are particularly obnoxious, I list them in the Sin Bin on my forum. To get out of the Sin Bin, go to the Resolutions thread and apologise. To go to my forum, click on the blue highlighted "My forums" link. There, you will discover something about me that might surprise you: I'm only a part-time beast. The rest of the time, I'm as sweet as a kitten and I'll do anything to help a writer who wants to write a decent story. It's just that I don't suffer fools gladly. Unfortunately, we are not short of fools.
My stories:
I usually write in the LOTR/Silmarillion fandoms. I have two recurring Original Characters, Angwë and Artíre. The stories featuring them are in this order:
Angwëverse: there are two stories in this series:
The Building of Celebdil - in which Angwë sets out to build a mountain of his own, and Artíre tells both Melkor and the Valar about it. This looks bad because there is a war on...
The Turning of Angwë - in which Angwë, who is in Middle Earth after the War of the Powers that occurred in Artíre's Choice, is told by his brother Sauron that Dwarves are mining in his mountain, Celebdil. He's not happy about it, to say the least...
Artíreverse: there are six stories in this series:
The Building of Celebdil - in which Angwë sets out to build a mountain of his own, and Artíre tells both Melkor and the Valar about it. This looks bad because there is a war on...
Artíre's Choice - in which Artíre is induced by Sauron to choose between serving the forces of light and the forces of darkness, when he would rather be neutral.
Artíre's Return - in which Artíre comes out of hiding and finds the world altered beyond all recognition. He is angry with Sauron and seeking revenge. If he could just persuade Melkor that Sauron is not to be trusted...
Artíre's Revenge - in which Artíre makes Sauron pay for forcing him to take sides.
Lords and Lordship - Artíre is sent to Rhûn to bring back a rebel for judgment. Rautanor, Sauron's aide goes with the Watcher, but will he help or hinder Artíre?
The Turning of Angwë - Artíre joins Angwë in chapter 12.
My other stories are amplified versions of what happened in the books and films. I use elements of both, and tend to be more lenient with regards to diversions from canon than other Tolkien-lovers, but I can't abide Mary Sues. See the "I'll SUE you" thread in my forum, Can We Talk? for details of my definition of a Sue.
Life is a learning curve - I just wish mine was not so steep!!
I also have aLiveJournal account, and am a member of deleterius. I spork, therefore I am!
