Synopsis

A prince from an overthrown planet comes to Earth and, with his guardian, tries to fit in at an school while trying to avoid assassins who have come to Earth to kill him.

Five miles out of Crestridge, a UFO lands. When the landing is picked up by military radar, a call is placed to a General Tucker. Nearby, a man hands a woman a likeness of Walt/D'Hai on a disk and instructs her to find him and the boy.
Matthew Star can't sleep. He admits to his guardian, Walt Shepherd ("Shep"), that he's tired of running. Walt agrees, but the alternative is death. Matt feels cheated that he never knew his father and can't have a normal life. Walt encourages him. They are in a new town, which is safe, for now.
It's the first day of school. Mr. Shepherd finds himself in Principal Kenneth Heller's office. Before long, he realizes he is not only the Science teacher, but Home Economics, Track Coach and Football Team Trainer. Matt meets Pam in Drama Class and they are instantly attracted to each other. He also meets Bob, and Brian, who reacts to him threateningly. Meanwhile, Walt finds his class unenthusiastic about the wonderful world of Science.
At lunch, Matt meets more people, including Cindy, who is the undercover accomplice of Float, the assassin.

General Tucker intercepts Walt in the parking lot. He wants Walt to drop the game and meet with him. He'll be in town a few days if Walt would care to pay him a visit. When Tucker is gone, Walt is disturbed that they've been found so soon.
Float and Cindy are spying on Matt and Walt's house. Matt and Pam arrive after dark, discussing taking the bus in the morning.

Eavesdropping, Float instructs Cindy to be on that bus and ride until the end. There will be no mistakes, like back in Connecticut.
Once home, Matt advises that he likes school and wants to stay. A still disturbed Walt replies, maybe, and sends Matt to take the trash out. The teen levitates the trash cans to the curb, which surprises Sam, the neighbor's Irish Setter.
The next day, Pam walks with Matt to the bus stop and they greet the others. Brian drives up in his jeep and announces some shocking news: Matt, who is white, is living with a black teacher. The others blow him off, which only makes Brian madder. He threatens Matthew again and drives off.
The students board the bus, including Cindy the assassin. After a few minutes, she triggers an odd-looking device which causes the brakes to fail. Realizing that there was no other choice, Matt concentrates energy through his hands into the bus, stopping the bus just as it hangs perilously off a cliff. Everyone jumps out the back to safety.
The next stop is the school nurse's office, where Walt quizzes Matt to make sure he wasn't seen by the school nurse. Cindy listens intently.
In the parking lot, Matthew explains how he stopped the bus unseen. Walt counters that it wasn't an accident, but done on purpose by their enemies. Walt decides to pay General Tucker a visit, after all.
Walt confronts General Tucker and asks him why he's so obsessed with them. Tucker says it's personal; that before he dies, he wants to share a meal and conversation with someone who comes from far away. He produces a file he's willing to destroy, with pictures of the pair and notes on their stays in Connecticut, New York, Wisconsin, Idaho and Philadelphia. Tucker advises that before Matt and Walt would move, a UFO would show up a few days before. Like this time: two days ago, north of town. But he won't tell more without information from Mr. Shepherd.
Walt states that they are from Quadris and gives their reasons for coming to Earth. Matthew is the crown prince with special gifts of telekinesis and telepathy.
Walt has the advantage of Quadris being 1,000 years ahead of Earth in technology. In the fourth cycle of the Quadrian year 8312, a ship will come to take them home.
Tucker offers the piece of information that there are two strangers after them.

Walt rushes home and orders Matt to start packing. At first Matt is stunned, but becomes angry and refuses. He's tired of running and wants to fight. Walt surprises Matthew by responding with relief. Walt is also tired of running and has been waiting for this moment for a long time.
They plan a strategy. A medical experiment. Anyone not from Earth would have different vital signs, such as the Quadrian pair - a pulse rate of twelve beats per minute.
In Science, Walt passes around a pulse rate indicator stick. It's a fun experiment until it reaches Cindy, who rather than being exposed, runs for the door. Matthew gives chase, followed by Walt. Momentarily halted by the force field produced by Cindy's device, Matt uses telekinesis to dissolve the field and they continue the chase.
They follow her to the swimming pool, where Walt's distraction and Matt's powers drive her device into the pool. She jumps in after it, only to be destroyed. She is revealed to be a robot, not a human. Matthew is relieved, but Walt reminds them that she's working for someone else. Walt says that he'll be home late, since he will be visiting General Tucker again.
In the parking lot, Walt is instead attacked by Float. He takes the unconscious Walt to a salvage yard and ties him up. They exchange pleasantries. Walt calls him one of Olan's lab soldiers and that E'taine's son (Matthew/E'hawke) will finish him. Float promises that he will destroy E'hawke easily because his powers are not matured.
Matthew and Pam come home after dark. So does Brian in his jeep, who stays out of sight. As Matt and Pam enter the quiet house, the phone rings. Someone (Float) asks for E'hawke, which immediately gets Matthew's attention. Float warns Matthew that if he doesn't use his telepathy to find D'Hai (Walt), his friend would die. Matt sends Pam away and envisions Walt in a salvage yard. He looks up the address in the phone book.
On the way out, he's jumped by Brian. Using both telekinesis and his friendship with Sam the dog to help him, Matt slips off and borrows Brian's jeep.
Float plans aloud. He will take away E'hawke's vision to constrict his powers; he knows the limitations.
Matthew arrives and calls to Walt telepathically. Walt pleads with him to go back, but Matt refuses.
Float sees Walt/D'Hai concentrating and realizes that the teenager is near. As Matt climbs the fence, Walt urges him mentally to use his senses for danger. When a nearby tower of cars falls, Matthew responds by toppling the car tower on which Float is standing.
Flares ignite, blinding Matthew. He runs, but finds he is surrounded by obstacles and more flares and explosions. He works his way through the salvage yard, finding Walt. It's a trap, with blazing flares all around them. Matt tries to drag Walt to safety, but they fall. Walt spots a welder's mask and tells Matt it will protect his eyes. It does. Just in the nick of time, Matthew reverses the collapse of a tower of car in his direction, instead directing it to bury Float. The threat is over.
General Tucker is having dinner with Walt and having the promised conversation. They discuss homesickness and the great honor that Walt feels in being responsible for the salvation of his planet. Tucker hands over the official file and bids goodbye.
On the way to the car, they run into Pam and Matthew and introductions are made. Tucker remarks that he is honored to meet Matthew. Pam is confused.
