Author has written 6 stories for Gundam Wing/AC, and Fushigi Yuugi.
Not that I think anyone will read this, but in case I liked your story (or didn't like it), and you want to know why, this is my criteria for reading and reviewing stories. I am an experienced fanfiction reader and have been reading for six years, almost every day until I hit college. Sad? Maybe. But I've grown picky over the years. So if I gave you a good review, it's not something I give every story. I am an English major, so maybe that will improve my value as a critic. I am willing to help and beta read for those authors that I think have potential with their stories as long as they promise me the same thing my roommates promise me: not to cry. Heh.
I read the following regularly: Gundam Wing, Inuyasha, X-men Evolution
I read the following occasionally: Roswell, Tenchi Muyo, Slayers, Escaflowne, Fushigi Yugi, Kyou Kara Maou
My fanfic reading filters:
I usually only read traditional couples or implied couples (or couples involving characters with no implications, but probability in the coupling). I do not read yaoi or yuri couples unless the author of the original series specifically made the members of said couple homosexual, specifically with each other. It's not that I have a problem with homosexuality- half of my friends are homo or bisexual- but that I have a problem with people asserting what they want on pre-established characters.
GW couples:
6x9
1xR
2xH
11x13
I make no exceptions to these couples
3xMU
4xD
5xS
I occasionally accept 4xC as a side couple or, very rarely, 3x4, only because it is so popular even among the non-yaoi fans. I don't actually look for 3xMU fics, with the exception of Midii Une (the author)'s works.
IY couples:
Inuyasha/Kagome
Miroku/Sango
Sesshomaru/Kagura
Sesshomaru/Rin
Kouga/Ayame
Kohaku/Rin
I only actively search for the first two couples, the others being accepted as side couples. Inuyasha/Kikyo is only acceptable if it turns into an Inuyasha/Kagome. I'm not a Kikyou hater, but I'm not a fan either.
X-EVO couples:
Jott
Kurtty
Romy
Lancitty
Jonda
Jubby
I only actively search for the first four, in that order. I occasionally will accept Rietro in the complete absence of Remy's character. Not all are cannon because I never read the original comics and so formed my opinions based solely on Evo, except for Romy, which the author Seven Sunningdale got me hooked on. I don't like Amanda or Colossus. I enjoy Kitty with both Kurt and Lance because Lance is my favorite character on the show, but I like her with Kurt better. I actually prefer reading Brotherhood fics that have no couplings. Fics that involve the sibling relationship between Pietro and Wanda are particularly intriguing.
Roswell: Candy, Dreamers, Stargazers, Lamptrimmers, Isabel/Kyle, Sherrif Valenti/Amy Deluca Slayers: Xellos/Filia, Lina/Gourry, Zelgadis/Amelia, Sylphiel/Koppi.
Tenchi Muyo: Ryoko/Tenchi ( I like Washu/Ryoko mother/daughter conflict fics too.)
Escaflowne: Hitomi/Van, Yukari/Amano, Millerna/Dryden, Millerna/Allen, Folken/Sora, Folken/Naria/Eriya.
Fushigi Yugi: Nakago/Soi, Miaka/Tamahome/Taka, Hotohori/Houki, Yui/Suboshi, Yui/Tetsuya.
Kyou Kara Maou: Yuuri/Wolfram, Anissina/Gwendal
There was a period for a while there when I stopped reading GW fics due to the influx of shit that the authors dared to call writing. Thanks to ff.n's character filters, I will now brave the category again, though it seems the cannon and traditional straight couples are not popular subject matter anymore. I am about to give up on Inuyasha. With its popularity having peeked, the influx of crap has begun and I can't find a decent story even using filters.
Criteria for clicking on a fic:
I usually skip the title and go straight to the summary.
General Summary No-No's:
Misspelling a word is fine. Misspelling more than one word is not fine. Misspelling a character's name is even worse. Repeatedly doing so immediately dismisses the story. If you don't know the characters, why are you writing about them? Also, do not use slang or AIM talk. It is unprofessional and you sound like a teenage ditz. Correct grammar helps, too.
Do not say "I suck at summaries. Just read." It is rude. You are trying to sell your story, in a way. Would you look at a product if the salesperson handed you something and demanded you buy it without even letting you preview it?
Do not say "I know, bad summary, but the story is better, I promise." Again, you are advertising your story and giving a small sample of your writing skill. Have confidence. Definitely do not apologize for the fic.
Do not announce that your characters are OOC. Let the reader decide that after they start reading. False advertising? Maybe. More readers? Yes.
Do not make your entire summary a series of questions or say anything resembling 'Want to find out? Read!" at the end. It is irritating. One or two tasteful questions are alright. Try getting second opinions on 'tasteful,' though.
Personal Summary No-No's:
I will not read a fic where an author announces self-insertion. I am reading the section for the characters and storylines in that series, not to read you living out your fantasies.
I will not read a fic where an author announces an OC as the main character or paired with a main character. I will assume it is self-insertion.
As previously mentioned, I will not read anything with the words 'shounen-ai', 'shoujo-ai', 'yaoi' or 'yuri' in the summary, especially if those words are in all caps or followed by multiple exclamation points.
I will not read a fic that announces it is rated PG-13 for language. I automatically assume that someone naive in the ways of the world has written it, which doesn't make for a very fun story.
I will not read X-overs. Just a personal thing. I like keeping my worlds separate.
I will not read a fic that expresses stereotyping. Calling a character a 'goth' or a 'punk' or a 'prep' like it's a real way to classify a person is a reflection of an immature, uncultured mind. Generalizing a character's personality is also a sign of immaturity. Saying such things as '...stoic Heero and baka Duo...' in the narration undermines the depths of the characters.
I will not read a fic that uses nicknames for characters that are not widely accepted. Such as 'Fluffy' for Sesshomaru is fine (as a joke/insult), but just plain 'Inu' is not a common or acceptable replacement for Inuyasha.
I will probably not read a fic if more than the first three chapters are posted all at once. I don't know why, really. I just won't.
I will not read a fic if each chapter has only 700ish words. I'm looking for substance, not review-mongers.
Summary A-Okay's:
Announce couples, genre more specific than ff.n allows you to choose (such as AUs), tactful warnings about possible rating changes, asking people simply "R&R please" is fine, time or place settings, short quotes from the story that hook the reader. Key word is 'hook'. All summaries want a hook.
I make exceptions sometimes for stories with bad summaries if there are a lot of reviews. That may be the only indication that the story is worth reading, and may be the only hope for the story to be read by me. Unless, of course, I've been impressed by the author in previous stories.
Story No-No's:
Do not brag at the beginning of any of your fics. Be modest. I actually read a fic where the author's note claimed that the author had invented the term 'Inutaisho' for Inuyasha's father, and that the fic I was about to read was becoming generally accepted as the most probable ending for the series. o_O Even if that were true, who would want to read anything written by such a person?
Do not write super-short chapters. As stated before, you look like a review-monger, and if I overlook the word count for your story and click on it, I will hit the back button at the top of the screen if the story's too short to scroll down.
Do not stereotype, generalize, or demean the characters. Character bashing is an insult to the author that created the characters and story that you love, too. Bashing is an easy way to over-simplify a character. Don't do it. Complex characters, whether you like them or not, is what makes a story interesting.
Do not press your personal beliefs or opinions on characters in an obvious manner. By personal beliefs, I do not mean that you can't have them believe in whatever you believe in, as long as it is in character or fits in with your storyline, but do not insult your reader by being close-minded. Such as abortion- a character can be whole-heartedly against it, but do not go into a passionate rage or say that anyone who has an abortion is going to Hades. As for opinion, don't say a character hates pink just because you hate pink.
Do not insult your reader. Do not tell them they are wrong. Within your story, do not be racist, homophobic or sexist. Sexism especially pisses me off, as a couple authors I've flamed can attest to.
Do not start with lengthy descriptions. Honestly? When it comes to fanfiction, long paragraphs are intimidating and I know I look at them with dread. Avoid them at least in the beginning of stories. And unless you are describing one character from another's POV, don't describe them. Hopefully the reader knows what the characters look like (this does not apply to OCs).
Do not have OOCness for main characters. If you don't write a character very well, don't feature them. Or get a lot of beta readers to help. If OOCness is necessary to the plot, make plausible excuses for the character's behavior.
Plagiarism goes without saying.
If I review your fic, I either really liked it, saw potential, or liked the plot enough to excuse any no-no's. I usually review in order to put the story on my Review History list so I can check for updates. However, ff.n has now limited the RH list to the last 200 reviews, so I have to manually type out a list and keep track of how many chapters are in each fic now. If I only review once, it either means that I've gotten bored, I'm lazy or the first time was just to point out something specific. If I review more than once, I'm either responding to a message written to me in an author's note, or I really like the fic.
All of the authors and stories in my favorites are exceptional. I can't vouch for some of the earlier Gundam Wing stories on those lists, since I put some of the stories up a long time ago and have become much pickier since. They will be at least decent stories, though. The authors are all highly recommended. Also, if you are having as much trouble as I am with finding quality stories, my advice is to go through your favorite authors' favorites lists and just keep following them. It's the only way to find anything decent here anymore.
As for my stories, I wouldn't ask you to read them. They are up because the reviews stroke my ego. The poems are good, but the 6x9 sucks, the 11x13 will never be continued and the FY and 1xR ones are only for those who like the abstract or theories.
