A Life With Only Love: The Story of Jewel

I can’t remember a time that she wasn’t there, keeping me safe, protecting everyone from anything, even when she was afraid. She was a comforting, loving soul who gave everything that she could for love. For all of my memories, she has been there, to help me, inspire me. Still, seven hours after this has happened, I can’t believe that she’s gone. I still hear her walking through the house; still see her shining eyes filled with love and compassion. Jewel wasn’t just any dog, she was family, and she was, without a doubt, the most amazing dog a girl could ask for.

When I was four, we received a call from a farm that my mother had worked at, saying that their black lab had puppies, and they were giving them to friends whom they knew would take care of them. We went to the farm in my father’s Jeep Wrangler, and right away, when she ran to the silo, we knew she was the one. When we got home, I named her Jewel, after the one pup from 101 Dalmatians. I smiled as she licked my face, and she loved us ever since.

Even when she gnawed through the tables, she still listened obediently, stopping when we asked her to. When camping, she walked beside us, not needing a leash, staying at our side. She comforted us when we were down, and she made us smile when we thought that there was no hope of one resurfacing in the world. She was resigned to give us anything, if only for love.

When she grew older, she grew wiser, her eyes seeing what couldn’t be seen by me. She stayed loving, caring, grasping the last bit of hope that the world had, and bending it to her will, if only to see us smile. She had eyes that brightened a room, the composure of perfection only thought of in stories. Whenever she would go to sleep, her paws would cross beneath her head, and it would be as if an angel was near you, protecting you.

On our way home from Stuarts Park in the Monongahela National Forest in West Virginia, my cousin, Amanda and I were petting her before she laid down on the floor, crossed her paws, and fell asleep. Around Winchester, Virginia, we stopped at a Wal-Mart to go to the bathroom, and when we said that Jewel wasn’t moving, my dad asked Amanda to get out of the truck so that she could get out.

“Dad, I don’t think she’s breathing,” I stuttered as he tried to get her to wake up. Nothing felt real; it felt like an awful dream, like it wasn’t happening.

I walked to the other side of the truck as my dad cried, “Jewel, Jewel you have to wake up. PLEASE JEWEL!!!” When I saw my cousin crying, I knew that it wasn’t a dream, and I cried, for this was the first time in my memory that I was without her.

When we told my mom, she was just as shocked as I had been, and when my neighbor, (she’s practically my Godmother, and she has know Jewel for the entirety of Jewel’s life) Shelly, came over to ask if everything was okay with the cats, I told her that my parents would have to tell her because I couldn’t. She kept asking what was wrong, and I stated that I needed to have my parents explain it. Once again, we had sobs today, and she cried, “This can’t be happening!”

So, whenever you see bright eyes, or have a moment of pure joy, remember Jewel, for she will be able to help the world, to comfort everyone as she had in life. She hasn’t left, for now she is with you s well, even though she never knew you. If the world had more people that were like Jewel instead of people with murderous intent, we would be able to live in a serene utopia.

Even though she is gone, she is still here. Every tear that I shed is not only from sorrow at losing the most caring person I have ever known, but also from joy since she no longer has to suffer, and that she can be with her parents, with my brother, Alan, and with the rest of my family, a young pup again, playing with everyone that we love, and making friends with all who meet her.

Her life has not ended, for she is with me in spirit, aiding me through the turmoil of my emotions, and protecting me from things that are out of my control. For the rest of my life, if I can only achieve part of what she had in her ten years, then I will be content. As I write this, not only are the tears flowing, but my memories of her are resurfacing, remembering all of the years I have shared with her. She will never leave me, and I will never forget her, the serene protector, who gave so much, yet asked for so little.

I told you it was a little out of the ordinary, but since she is gone, I felt that I owed her something, if it was only this small piece of information about her. She gave me so much, but she only asked for love, and I will never forget her, no matter what time throws at me. If you have finished reading this, thank you for reading the small piece about my greatest inspiration and the greatest friend a person could ask for. Once again, thanks!
