Foremost pet peeve in fan fiction is the "Halo Effect." Communicate! by Rudolph F. and Kathleen S. Verderber, defines this as "perception that a person has a whole set of characteristics when you have actually observed only one characteristic, trait or behavior." 'This perception is based on your own implicit personality theory that tells you that certain traits go together.' Those naughty Akatsuki boys get a lot of grief for being criminals, yes, they ARE criminals. But all we've ever seen is that they kill people. (Oddly, that seems to be their job? o.O unless I'm confused about what all the ninjas in the ninja villages do...) Until Madara revealed to Sasuke that Itachi had been ordered to kill his girlfriend, I'd figured that Itachi just died a virgin. Not because he isn't attractive or charming enough to get laid, but because his life was about gaining power, he was raised to get strong. Period. I thought he was asexual, his striving for power doesn't really allow time to establish a relationship and his job would keep him from being foolish enough to tempt fate with a visit to a brothel. I can't see him or any other member of Akatsuki as a rapist. It doesn't fit into the known profiles for them. It seems beneath them. They each have a code of morality, even if it didn't mesh with their village's ideals. I read mostly Inuyasha and Naruto. I am specific with my pairings and genre I prefer to read. I use the search feature so that I only read Sesshomaru Kagome stories in Inuyasha and Naruto is almost exclusively Akatsuki x Girl or Kakashi x Girl. I read Adventure/Romance/Humor/Drama/Action/Fantasy/Friendship/Suspense. I do not read sick fics. Anything with rape/brutality that gets put in the "romance" genre really irritates me. A warning needs to be in the summary. Rape is not a lemon, it's an act of violence. It will never lead to romance between the perpetrator and the victim, no matter how you stretch your imagination, it is rape. I stop reading fics when the female character is a complete twit, or objectified, or if the male characters are so domineering and overbearing that the woman is disallowed to be a person at all. Maybe that's because I grew up believing that my opinion matters, perhaps not to him, but it matters, and I don't have to put up with being pushed around and ordered to do this or that. If something needs to be done, I'll do it, I don't need to get ordered around. If someone isn't willing to hear me out, I am free to leave. Simpering females frustrate me to no end. Obviously not all females are strong emotionally, mentally, or physically but, when a character is taken and completely changed to suit the author's idea of how they should respond to a specific situation or person, it takes away from the reason we are reading that fan fiction base. I. E. Inuyasha fan fiction, Kagome is not a chicken, nor is she an idiot, she is brazen and bold, but she knows when to hold her tongue and she is respectful. Sesshomaru doesn't scare her, he is powerful though and she knows it. That wouldn't have her cowering away from him in fear, she NEVER did that for anyone. However, she would never outright challenge their power, unless Inuyasha or backup was available. She was determined, reserved, and proud, not meek and simple minded. I prefer correct grammer and spelling. It is extremely difficult to enjoy a story when I can't get into it because I have to stop and figure out what the author was trying to say. Grammer includes using the correct tense of a word; past tense, present tense, and future tense. As well as making sure the sentence your writing will make sense when your sober or to your drunken audience. Spelling includes using the correct word, not just a word that sounds like it but has a completely different meaning. For example: too, to, two... their, there, and they're. | |||||||
