Introductions

There's not much to tell! I'm 24, a born-and-bred Northeast Ohioan, and a language nerd (with a B.A. in French and an M.A. in French literature, it's hard not to be). I'm known as "jennyfair" elsewhere in the world of Phandom as well as on deviantART, and I went by "waxing poetic" on Aria. Erik/Mannequin, anyone?

I've loved The Phantom of the Opera in (almost) all its incarnations for a dozen or so years now, and although I drew my first piece of fanart after watching the Charles Dance miniseries on TV, I have only been writing fan fiction since the summer of 2005. That mini series was my first real exposure to Phantom, other than having seen school chorus concerts with music from ALW, but it was seeing the musical itself that really sparked my love for the story. My first experience with "phiction" was Nicola Waters and her brilliant Leroux fill-ins, something I think had a great influence on me because I still love fill-ins and personally I only write one-shots. This was back in the day of webrings and I used to scour the internet for more phan-written fiction. You could find little nuggets of brill phan work all over the place!

I try not to neglect Leroux, though I admit I prefer the ALW musical. I love the 1989 film with Robert Englund and think it's given an undeserved bad wrap. Englund can be very Leroux-ish at times, a great balance of sadistic and adoring. Conversely, I think Kay is often given too much credit, especially when taken to be canon over Leroux! Not to say I didn't devour the story when I first found it on a bookstore shelf in 1996, but there are many aspects of the book I don't agree with. I'm also an advocate for the David Staller musical! It's another diamond in the rough when it comes to resurrecting usually ignored elements of Leroux's story like the Persian and Erik's arrogant nature. Basically, I'm willing to give any version a try.
