| Ffordesoon |
Author has written 6 stories for Kim Possible. Name's Ffordesoon, like the big type says. I'm a 22-year-old writer. I also talk way too much, as you're about to find out. I finally broke down and got an ffnet account, because I'm tired of reading shitty fanfics, and because I (very!) reluctantly decided late one night to set aside my problems with fanfiction and try my hand at it. Mostly write original stuff, but I'm kinda obsessed with fanfiction. I like Kim Possible fics. Kigo, specifically. No, I don't know why. Don't even like the show that much (I TiVo it every night, though. Make of that what you will). Maybe it's the fact that select Kigo fanfics are among the best fiction (in any medium) I've read or seen in a while. Yes, I know what I'm saying. Yes, it hurts a bit to say it. No, I'm not ashamed. No, I don't particularly care about spelling or grammar errors -- if the story's good enough. Hobnob-rev, Allaine, King in Yellow, TempestDash, NoDrogs, Failte200, Blackbird, Apoptosis, Beeftony, and StarvingLunatic to a certain extent have all created compelling stories that put much of the canonical KP saga to shame. In KP fanfiction, the characters are free to act as they might in real life, sans the constraints imposed upon them by the Mouse and the FCC; the plot can get as dark as the author wishes; and the author in return is able to play with a surprisingly rich mythos to which they otherwise wouldn't have access. This ultimately leads to deeper, better stories than the canon allows, or at the very least ones more closely observed and cerebral. I mean no disrespect to Messrs. Schooley & McCorkle when I say this. I'm sure they'd like to take some steps toward maturity and darkness on the show, but I just don't think Disney would let them. All this is not to say I don't enjoy the show; I do enjoy it quite a bit. Though it rarely reaches actual greatness, much of the writing is quick-witted in a way that many shows these days can't grasp. One of my mottoes is: "If you can't do Great, do Clever." KP is often a shining example of this, shockingly so for a weekly Disney cartoon. There's often a layer of subtext to the stories (though KP is far more obvious with its high school metaphors than the incomparable Buffy the Vampire Slayer) that at least suggests living, breathing characters with actual personalities and lives outside what's being displayed in "This Week's Exciting Episode." The difference between a good story and a bad one, in my opinion, is merely this: If the characters are lifeless, no amount of thesaurus-fueled wankery, no matter how well done, will make me as a reader give a rat's ass about your plastic creations. This is why Stephen King is a good writer and Dean Koontz isn't. KP the show almost always passes the test in this regard, no matter how lazily the actual plot-of-the-week is constructed. Plus, spies are awesome. Thanks for letting me bore you with this long-ass rant. Feel free to go about your day now. Cheers! | |||||||||||
