Author has written 26 stories for Harry Potter, and Daria. Who am I? I'm a 38 year old cubicle jockey in Northern New Jersey with a beautiful wife, two cats, and too many student loan bills to have the job I hold. I write Harry Potter Fan-Fiction as a hobby. Likes and dislikes: I follow sports – a lot. I root for evil empires: New York Yankees, Los Angeles Galaxy and The University of Southern California Trojans (MBA '05. No bandwagoning here) primarily. I generally dislike teams that come from nowhere – crazy bunches of kids that no one gave a chance who might just win the championship and maybe a few hearts along the way. You can beat your Rally Monkeys to death with your Bloody Socks and I'd be just fine. The 2007 New York Football Giants are a notable exception to this rule. In addition to sports, I love cooking, poker and crab fishing, as long as I'm watching it on TV from the comfort of my La-Z-Boy. So if Bourdain, Iron Chef or Deadliest Catch is on, I'm probably watching it. If it's Saturday, I'm probably watching soccer. And if you're an American sports fan denigrating the Beautiful Game or a non-American sports fan denigrating the way my countrymen play the Beautiful Game (or trying to get us to call it Football), I'm probably ignoring you and enjoying MLS soccer anyway. Where can you find me? Two places: The Reviews Lounge and The Sober Universe. The Reviews Lounge is inhabited by a great bunch of folks who've made it their mission to ensure that good stories are rewarded by reviews. Reviews are wonderful – they are (as the inimitable Cassandra's Cross has said) the only payment a fanfiction author receives. This is a truly noble thing. The Sober Universe started out as a reaction to Jo Rowling's capricious blitherings about what her characters may or may not be up to in the years following Chapter 36 of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. We got together to moan, whine and complain about these "revelations," and enjoy each other's company. Of late, it's much more of the latter. We tend to be a more ahem seasoned group, but the conversation isn't that much more mature. What have I written? Some decent one-shots, a rather embarrassingly indulgent H/G post-DH (which I leave on my profile as a monument to first-efforts everywhere), and two larger projects: Summer of '96 (H/Tonks) and The Mercury Chronicles (Next-Gen Trio with some ScoRose overtones). Summer of '96 came about from discussion on the RL board. I'm a Harry/Tonks shipper, and I have been since reading OoTP for the first time. Yet, every H/T piece I've read, good and bad, is wildly AU, relying on a character transformation in Harry that Jo would just never write. So I wanted to see if a canonical Harry/Tonks could be written. And apparently it can. This project was wonderfully well received by the H/T community here at ff.net, and I thank them profusely for their support, even if they hated my admittedly rushed ending. The Mercury Chronicles started life as a one-shot: Albus Potter and the Misspent Youth. I created these snarky, spoiled characters that I absolutely fell in love with and couldn't get out of my head. So I didn't try. It's a series of one-shots, and while I try to keep them independent, it's almost always best to have read Misspent Youth first. If you're reading my profile because you're trying to understand something you've missed in these stories: Albus and my OC Angelica are Slytherins, while Rose and Scorpius are Ravenclaws. James, Freddie, Roxanne, Lily and Hugo are all Gryffindors. The Golden Trio Plus Ginny are great parents who are treated as teenagers will, and wealth and fame haven't changed them anywhere near as much as they've changed their children. What great authors are you missing that you should be reading? Let's start with two of my compañeras from The Sober Universe: WhiskeyTangoFoxtrot, in addition to having the best penname in FanFiction, is writing a remarkably ambitious project that's into its second story. Her main character is Daphne Greengrass, and she's turned this Slytherin into a DoM fighter, an original DA member, and a snarky, mouthy, profane good-girl. WTF's keen eye and scarily accurate portrayal of teenaged relationships and dialogue have taken Daphne's sixth and seventh years and shown us the bits that Jo glossed over, giving us a much fuller, richer set of characters than we ever got in canon. First read Daphne Greengrass and the Sixth Year From Hell, and then go on to Daphne Greengrass and the Seventh Year From Hell. She's also written some quite lovely one-shots. My favorite is Luna's Light, a character sketch on everyone's favorite Ravenclaw. Sara Winters does a fair bit of writing outside the hallowed ones and zeros of FF.net, which she's posted links to on her profile. Her major ff.net project, Free Will and Fate, is a take on the classic time-traveling story and the classic Neville as BWL story. Remarkably dense and luxuriously slow moving, she's so thoroughly developed her alternate universe that the reader can easily mistake it for the original. In doing so, she's created a tight mystery, breathtaking suspense and characters who are believable both in their connection to canon and their development through the changes in her alternate timeline. Oh, it's also a believable H/Hr, no mean feat in itself. In addition to Free Will and Fate, Sara's written a couple of tasty outtakes and two one-shots revolving around Severus Snape. More authors to come… For my Mercurial Minions: Other Next-Gen fics you absolutely must subscribe to. There are some wonderful stories out there featuring the children of our favorite canon characters. These are some of the best chapter fics in the genre: Albus Potter and the Year of the Badger by Bartimus Crotchety Lost and it's sequel Lessons Learned by loveadubdub And no "best of" list would be complete without a story by this author. Must Be Genetic by Lady Altair. | |||||||||||
