OBITUARY FOR THE LATE MR. COMMON SENSE:

Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, Common Sense, who has been with us for many years. No one knows for sure how old he was since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape.

He will be remembered for having cultivated such valuable lessons as: knowing when to come in out of the rain, why the early bird gets the worm, life isn't always fair, and maybe it was my fault.

Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies (don't spend more than you can earn) and reliable strategies (adults, not children, are in charge). His health began to deteriorate rapidly when well-intentioned but overbearing regulations were set in place. Reports of a 6-year-old boy charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate, teens suspended from school for using mouthwash after lunch, and a teacher fired for reprimanding an unruly student only worsened his condition.

Common Sense lost ground when parents attacked teachers for doing the job that they themselves had failed to do in disciplining their unruly children. It declined even further when schools were required to get parental consent to administer Calpol, sun lotion, or a band-aid to a student, but could not inform parents when a student became pregnant and wanted to have an abortion.

Common Sense lost the will to live as the Ten Commandments became contraband, churches became businesses, and criminals received better treatment than their victims.

Common Sense took a beating when you couldn't defend yourself from a burglar in your own home and the burglar could sue you for assault.

Common Sense finally gave up the will to live after a woman failed to realize that a steaming cup of coffee was hot. She spilled a little in her lap and was promptly awarded a huge settlement.

Common Sense was preceded in death by his parents Truth and Trust, his wife Discretion, his daughter Responsibility, and his son Reason.

He is survived by his 3 stepbrothers I Know My Rights, Someone Else Is To Blame, and I'm A Victim. Not many attended his funeral because so few realized he was gone. If you still remember him, pass this on. If not, join the majority and do nothing.

Taken from his review of the Phantom Menace, the psycho reviewer proposes the following as a way to highlight whether a character is well-written, acted, or explained by having us, the viewers, recount traits that we saw which were independent of their roles or their physical appearances.

So to test this theory, I've decided to put up this challenge for myself and anyone who wants to participate. Think up Four or Five characters and describe them without revealing their role in the movie/show/anime/video game/comic/etc or what they looked like and wore. Describe them like your describing someone completely foreign to whatever you've watched.

No one person is right, so just post your opinions and I swear that I won't pick it apart...even if you are 100% wrong.(ignore the last part) Besides, this is just a fun way of finding out if your favorite/most hated character is well-written or just a terrible marketing mess.

Shinji Ikari (Evangelion)- good example

Shinji is a troubled brave little child.

He hates the circumstances that his bastard father keeps putting him into, but keeps going despite how unfair everything is.

He's talented and strong, but his legendarily low self-esteem causes him to think of himself as weak and cowardly.

At times, his burden becomes too hard for him to handle and can cause him to retreat into a shell, but ultimately, he'll swallow his own pain and fight to protect the people even if nobody loves him.

Edward Cullen (Twilight)- bad example

Well...he's...Pretentious?...Troubled...for some reason...Is technical pedophile a physical description? Anyway...yeah I've got nothing.

Seto Kaiba (Yugioh)- good example

An arrogant SOB if you've ever seen one. He gets what he wants, regardless of who gets hurt. But deep down, he cares about his brother. He's also somewhat honorable even to people he belittles if only because he's got nothing to fear from you. He has an ego that can't be properly measured and wants everyone to know about it. But he also has a good work ethic and never crosses whatever ethical line he set after he came to the top.

Don't ask me where that line is because I couldn't tell you.

Qui-Gon Jinn (Star Wars: The Phantom Menace)- decent example

Stoic...he saw the best in everyone including the misfits that everyone mistrusted or outright hated. In control of his emotions even in deadly situations. But can be witty and capable of using people's vises against them.

Yeah it's not much, but it's better than what RedLetterMedia came up with.

Spike Spiegal (Cowboy Bebop)- good example

He lives on the fringe of everything. He lives life like he never has anything to lose even when he literally has his life on the line. Laid back, relaxed, takes things one step at a time. Even when utterly beaten down and defeated, he has an air of control over his situations.

Legolas (Lord of the Rings)- okay example

...This is honestly a hard one...even the book didn't give him much...He is insightful into things that other people might not pick up on. He is loyal and true to the oaths he takes. And even though he might not trust you at first, once you earn that trust, he'll fight against the legions of hell to aid you.

Okay, obviously this is why Legolas was a part of a group rather than fleshed out as an individual...there's barely nothing to see on a stand-alone level.

Duncan (Dragon Age: Origins)- good example

He is a very powerful presence in any room. Polite, but very assertive about the greater needs and won't hesitate to bluntly tell you that what you think or what you're about to do will get you killed. He has a purpose and is strongly focused on that purpose. Yet, he also cares about his comrades in arms enough to mourn their sacrifice for the greater good.

He doesn't enjoy having to go through the lengths that he does, but it's for the sake of the country so he does it without hesitation.

Master Chief (Halo) - okay example...maybe

This probably isn't fair because Master Chief is an Action Hero and the only thing Action heroes need to do is kick ass and take names...but let's see...

He's always determined to get the job done, he doesn't immediately trust people especially if they've wronged him or tried to kill him in the past, but he's willing to overlook his own prejudices to finish the fight. He never loses his composure (I think...), doesn't say much but his actions speak for him.

Better than I thought I could do.

Asuka (Evangelion)- well-written bitch

Arrogant little...headstrong, never takes the feelings of others into consideration because she doesn't care, Always wants to be on top. But also insecure and actually very fragile on an emotional level hence the reason she puts up a wall against the people she meets.

Kairi (Kingdom Hearts)- decent example

Another hard one because...she doesn't get as much screen time...But she is brave despite never knowing if what she can do is enough. Isn't afraid to get her knees scrapped and doesn't wait around for other people to guide her in helping her friends. Can be crafty at times even when she doesn't mean to be and is always there for her friends.

I could say more...but that would be breaking the rules.

Aqua (Kingdom Hearts)- good example

She's a responsible but gentle individual. She'll never give up on a friend even when all hope seems lost, she never stops seeing the light in even the darkest situation. Even when it seems like she's been defeated, she'll keep trying as long as she can stand. She might appear emotionally frail, but she'll never let anything sway her from what she knows to be right.

Bella Swan (Twilight)- horribly written spoiled and pretentious bitch

Okay...I can do this one...

Selfish...pretentious...whiny...needy...shallow...short-sighted...and manipulative. Which wouldn't be bad and would make for a pretty interesting character...IF IT WAS INTENTIONAL!
