“I think it is too dangerous.”

“Cucuy, did I ask for your opinion? No. No, I did not. You’re going to go find this – I’m sorry, I’m still having trouble keeping a straight face here. I mean, we’re supposed to be scared of some guy who calls himself ‘El’? What is he, the Mexican Cher? The Gunslinger Formerly Known as Prince? Geez, it’s absolutely ridiculous.”

“Meester Sands—”

“Take me, for example. My mother gave me the name of Sheldon. Now, I could have wussed out and gone with Jeffrey. Taken the easy road. But no. I stuck it out. I made it work for me. Johnny Cash would have been proud.”

“Senor—”

“But which one of us are you scared of? Apparently it’s the living legend. It’s a kick in the keester, I’m telling you. Is that the trick to being scary, then? To go moaning off to some remote village after tragedy strikes?"

“El Mariachi, he has killed many men.”

“Well, isn’t he special. And I’m not pouting, by the way. That would imply jealousy, of which there is none. I’m just … vexed. So anyway, you’ll go get this El Mariachi, capiche? We’re going to kill the future president of this country, after all. A special job deserves special execution, pun intended. And if it’s gonna take a man who goes by an article instead of a name, so be it.” Sands takes a bite of his pork and grimaces. “Of course,” he says around a mouthful, “if he’s really as irritating as I think he’ll be, we’ll just kill him.”
