I’m only ten years old, and already on my own. Finally I got away from that horrid, damp place. Every night the same happened over and over. I would be upstairs and in he came, drunk. With that familiar beer bottle in hand he beat me, hit me, and almost killed me. I would cry myself to sleep, aching and bleeding, wanting that pain to be gone, it never went. Morning would come and I was alone waiting, crying, sobbing, and shaking. Then night came again so clear. I was upstairs and in he came again, drunk. With the familiar beer bottle in hand he beat me, hit me, and almost killed me. That Friday night was the worst of all the nights. He kicked me, beat me, thru me. Pulled my brown curls back with a solid tug, and pushed me down the stairs yelling. The things he would say “Ungrateful, ugly, dumb, mistake,” and on he went. Lying by the bottom steps, I prayed as he loomed over me ready to continue. “Now I lay me down to sleep, I pray the Lord my soul to keep. If I die before I wake I give the lord my soul to take.” I prayed softly as his shadow loomed over me. One last kick in the ribs, a snap as pain bottled through me. I sobbed lying there as he left with my last words to him saying “I’m sorry.” That night my Daddy murdered me.
