SESSHOUMARU/RIN: WHY I BELIEVE A ROMANTIC INTERPRETATION OF THEIR RELATIONSHIP IS VALID AND REASONABLE. (Note: I'm not saying other interpretations are unacceptable, or romantic relationship is the only 'right' way to interpret them. I am saying that romance is ONE OF the ways they CAN be interpreted, and it is not totally unreasonable to see their relationship that way.)

1) RT does not have anything against lolicon, and is, in fact, a supporter of lolicon (or at least, the right to write lolicon pairings in anime and manga) as evidenced by her showing up in Tokyo to protest a law that was purposed which would ban the production of lolicon in Tokyo. (SEE: http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2010-03-15/creators-decry-tokyo-proposed-virtual-child-porn-ban )

Also, lolicon is defined as 15 and under in romantic relationships, and Kagome is 15, while InuYasha is 250 years old at minimum. (Sesshoumaru is 19 in 'human years', according to his Japanese Language character profile, and as shown in the InuYasha companion guide book, released in English as well.)

2)The mythology (which, RT is clearly very knowledgable about Japanese mythology due to her level of detail in depiction mythological creatures/legends in InuYasha, even down to the myth that tripping and falling in the woods is what would provoke wolf demons (ookami) to attack and kill you* and that is how Rin died) of the Inugami/Inumochi stating that male dog demons are able to be 'tamed' (only by human females, known as Inumochi, or 'dog-witches') into being protection spirits by offering them food* (Rin offered Sesshoumaru food, and considereing she had to bring more each day, and there were no 'leftovers' from the day before, we can infer that Sesshoumaru WAS in fact eating it, although his pride would never allow him to admit that aloud), and those male dog-demons become incredibly attached/bonded to their human women, and oftentimes romantically. Women with an out-of-control possesive dog demon would actually have to have them exorcized sometimes, to get them to leave them alone because the male dog-demons would kill would-be husbands, out of jealousy.

3) The fact that in the Japanese language character profile for Rin, it is stated openly that Sesshoumaru LOVES Rin, and the kanji used is that of Shitai, which means 'to love deeply, to adore, to YEARN FOR' - this is NOT a paternal or familial or even a platonic kind of love. It is *almost* always used to indicate romantic feelings for someone, and frequently used for romantic feelings that one must wait to act upon (such as in the situation where two people were engaged to be married, but had to wait to be married in order to be together, or a woman waiting for her husband to come back from war, etc.,) which COULD, in THEORY indicate that Sesshoumaru is waiting for Rin to grow up before he acts on his romantic feelings for Rin.*

慕 The Kanji used in Shitau (minus the hiragana 'u'), and, as it is in the character blurb, 慕い Shitai)

Shitau or Shitai means, 'to adore', 'to love deeply', 'to yearn for', and 'to miss' as well.

3a) More telling though, is what words are NEVER used. When Sesshoumaru's mother refers to Rin being Sesshoumaru's 'beloved person', she does not use any of the words that would specifically indicate paternal feelings. She does not call her a 'beloved child', or a 'beloved daughter'... Instead, she uses one of the words for 'beloved' that can be taken either way, and THEN follows it up with, "You have inherited your father's strange trait and become like him," or you could also say, "You have become strange like your father by inheriting his trait," where the trait being referred to is understood to be his love for a human girl.

If RT wanted to end the debate immediately, she could have simply had Sesshoumaru's mother call Rin his beloved child, 愛し子 (itoshigo), or 愛児 (aiji), or beloved daughter. 愛嬢 (aijou) or 愛娘 (manamusume). She could have had Sesshoumaru himself refer to Rin as a daughter, or have Rin refer to Sesshoumaru as a daughter would a father. It would have been easy to clear it all up once and for all by writing a scene where Rin asks Sesshoumaru if he will be her father, now. Of course, he'd refuse, but at LEAST we would know Rin feels like Sesshoumaru is a father to her.

3b) Also, we have the situation in the third movie, which, while not directly written by RT, is considered to be part of the official canon by most, including word of God from the studio. The villain's sword (the sword could also arguably BE the villain), fights Sesshoumaru. Then a bit later he kidnaps Rin. Takemaru holds his blade above RIN'S head and says, "She is Izayoi... they are both Izayoi", and while we do get a camera pan to see Kagome's horrified face, it is RIN the villain tries to kill as Izayoi's effigy; he was clearly talking about HER when he said "she is Izayoi" the first time. It could be argued we saw Kagome's horrified face, to see her reaction to the villain saying that "Rin is Izayoi", because that has great implications for what Rin's relationship to Sesshoumaru is, and Kagome is reacting to finding out Sesshoumaru loves Rin - and/or we're just seeing her reaction to seeing Rin killed (well, saved just in the nick of time by Sesshoumaru. XD).

Later on, the villain Takemaru makes a pointed remark to Sesshoumaru, and says, "When these blades touch, I know all your secrets." It can EASILY be interpreted that he's talking about Sesshoumaru's 'secret' feelings for Rin, and, that knowing this secret is why he chose to go after Rin to get to Sesshoumaru, given the context.

3c) Many times Rin is compared to Kagome, who is in love with InuYasha.

In Jaken Falls Ill, it's even played with that Rin may be 'smitten' with a demon. Rin doesn't know what the word 'smitten' means, but it was clearly meant to tease the audience a bit.

In the final one minute of episode 99, "Sesshoumaru and Kouga: A Dangerous Encounter" Kouga sits musing that he guesses Sesshoumaru doesn't hate humans after all, and then begins to speculate on why Sesshoumaru allows Rin to follow him. He says, "If she were a pretty girl like Kagome, then I'd understand but... Hey, wait... You don't think...?" Hikaku and Ginta immediately rush to cover Kouga's mouth, while *sweatdropping, saying, "No! Don't say such a thing aloud!" It is left to the viewer to fill in the blank, which is not uncommon in Japanese language/culture. Things that are uncomfortable or awkward to speak of are left unsaid, but are CLEARLY understood by everyone involved.

4) The fact that the class difference would not mean they could not be together, as women could marry above their class and the man would retain his station with no dishonor. The fourth Tokugawa shogunate's mother was a merchant's (the lowest class in Japanese society at the time) son. His father was the 3rd Tokugawa Shogunate, and he married a common girl, and it was accepted. It was unusual, but at least 3 times in notable history, a nobleman took a common woman as his wife. 5)Literary Precendent: The adult man/young girl (in waiting, until she was about 13, which was marrying age in sengoku jidai era) romantic relationship has been a staple of Japanese literature since literally the FIRST novel in recorded history, 'Tale of Genji', which featured a nobleman (an arrogant, womanizing, asshole with daddy issues and a bad temper), who found a nine year old girl on a battlefeild, saved her life, kept her with him for about a year (where, he fell in love with her, amidst his womanizing), so then he gave her to an old woman* to raise her and train her in the ways of women and how to be his 'perfect wife' and he came to collect her for marriage when she was 13 years old. Genji/Murasaki is a classic romance story in Japan (yes, it's romance, depsite the fact Genji starts out as quite a bastard, it's generally accepted that he learns to love due to Murasaki's gentle heart, and because of his love for her, he stops womanizing and being such a bastard by the end).

The story is largely misinterpreted by those with little to no understanding of Japanese culture as a story where Murasaki is somehow abused. Such is not the case. The deflowering scene, much like even modern-day Japanese erotica might read like a rape scene to someone who doesn't understand Japanese culture and sexual politics, but IT'S NOT A RAPE SCENE. Women were and ARE actually supposed to resist and cry and say 'stop, no please!' BECAUSE IT'S CONSIDERED 'FEMININE'. It also puts all the responsibility on the guy, thus saving the woman any embarrassment from sex. It's not HER fault, because HE FORCED HER... Thus, she doesn't have anything to be 'ashamed' over... If she just happens to end up liking it, well... No one has to know that. ;)

Also, people who do not understand Japanese language frequently misinterpret this old woman to have been her actual grandmother, because 'obaasama' is used, however Japanese language uses familial titles even for unrealted people, who are of the proper age that they could be the person's grandma/uncle/older brother/older sister/daughter/neice etc., Any random teenage boy a little girl meets can be called by the title 'oniisan', and a young girl would call any random old woman she meets 'obaasama', even if they are unrelated.

6)The age difference would not only be fine, but EXPECTED in samurai and noble Japanese culture. Noblemen almost always had very young sexual partners. PEDOPHILIA WAS CONSIDERED TO BE THE MOST PURE AND HONORABLE FORM OF LOVE (which, again, you can read that little bit of info at the link I provided at the end of this), and a SACRED TRADITION.

Females taken by older men as concubines or brides were known as osanazuma 幼妻 (lit. "intimate playmate"), and frequently young girls (especially those born into concubine or courtesan status) were trained in the erotic arts starting as young as 8 or 9 years old, so they would be good concubines, courtesans, or wives, by the time they were 13 years old.

"No one would would question why a powerful man ofn noble station would take beautiful youths to his bed, they would instead question why he did not."

The male/male version of Adult/Child sexual relationships was known as Wakashudo (the way of young men), and the gender neutral version of adult/child relationships was known as 'bi-do' or 'The beautiful way'.

You can find more information on the systematic practice of pederastic relationships (in the male/male version (the most noted type of pederasty, although it happened between men and young girls as well), the child made sure for about five years that the adult was 'worthy' and then started a sexual relationship with them when the child was around 11 or 12 and it didn't end until age 18 or 19 formally, but oftentimes it remained a life-long realtionship) in noble Japanese culture HERE:

“A young man should test an older man for at least five years, and if he is assured of that person’s intentions, then he too should request the relationship… If the younger man can devote himself and get into the situation for five or six years then it will not be unsuitable.”(5)

It would appear that this process would have had to start at an early age indeed, since such relationships formally ended at the time of the coming-of-age ceremony, usually around the age of eighteen or nineteen. At that time the youth would receive the tonsure (a cutting of the forelocks to simulate a receding hairline, a symbolic grasp for status in a society in which people to this day compare birth dates in an effort to establish pecking order) and become available in turn for taking the role of the adult in other shudo relationships. As in ancient times however, the partners would usually remain close friends even after the end of the pedagogic/erotic phase, and some of these relationships did not dissolve with the passing of time, becoming instead life-long love affairs.

And, all this information aside, the bottomline is that This is FAN fiction, and we can write what we like, and it's all in good fun, y'know?

I used to say 'nothing is too squicky'... but I sorely underestimated the creativity of some people, and while I do not judge others for their interests and fantasies (so long as they don't break the law or victimize people in real life), there are some things I just can't write.

Things I have no issue with:

1. Lolicon/Shoutacon. This is a particular favorite of mine to write. I write child!Rin in a loving consensual lolicon relationship with Sesshomaru. To be perfectly honest lolicon/shoutacon requests will probably get done first, simply because this is what it is easiest/most enjoyable for me to write. Please scroll down and read my guidelines for Loli/Shouta writing.

2. Incest - My second fav pairing of all time is incestuous, and I have no issue writing incest at all. When used in conjunction with loli/shouta or with adults - either way is fine for me.

3. Domination/submission - D/s scenarios I write are consensual, however I have no problems going as 'hardcore' into it as you'd like to see. This is as close to torture as I'll get, because I'll go as rough as you'd like to see - so long as it's consensual. Hey, some people LIKE to be tied up and beaten!

4. Bondage - I like bondage! Bondage is fun!

5. Spanking - light pain infliction in a consensual relationship or heavy spanking in a consensual relation - so long as the person getting spanked is okay with it. (That doesn't mean they won't beg for the spanker to 'stop' or cry. Hey! That's half the fun, as well as what a 'safe word' is for!

6. Blood play - Hells, one of my fave pairings is a couple of vampire siblings. There is LOTS of blood-play in my future. Read 'Needed' and you'll see how much I couldn't care less about blood play.

7. Animal stuff - TO AN EXTENT. One of my fave characters is a DOG DEMON. Going along with that, he has some doggie behaviors and traits. I stop FAR SHORT of bestiality... most of the time. LOL. I don't do 'FURRY' or anthropomorphic animals - so don't ask.

8. Futanari/Female Trans - With a VIABLE EXPLANATION ala Yuuki growing a blood penis in VK XD

9. Tentacles - ARE TOTES FUN!

Going along with this... If you have some moral outrage regarding Lolicon: I DO NOT CARE. My readers don't care. NO ONE CARES about your butthurt regarding my writing that NO ONE IS FORCING YOU TO READ. DON'T LIKE IT; DON'T READ IT!!

Flaming my lolicon fics will most likely cause me to 1) Ignore you 2)Write a lolicon fic dedicated to you 3)Write MOAR lolicon 4) Mock you, most likely publicly.

Oh, and I'm never going to stop writing and posting lolicon, if not here then elsewhere. I have a first amendment right to write what I want, and there will always be SOMEWHERE to host it.

My Policy Regarding 'Borrowing' from my Fics

Lately I've been having a LOT of people who have PMed me to ask if they can use an idea from one of my stories. First off let me say how incredibly HONORED I feel that anyone would want to use one of MY ideas for a story... That is just... WOW. AWESOME. You guys (my readers) are WONDERFUL and I LUFFS you ALL.

Here is my standard response: If it is an idea that is common in fandom, then you don't even have to ask... IF, however, it is an idea or concept that is solely mine (i.e. Rin giving birth like she did in 'Beautiful 3 - Shinnoumaru), then you do NOT have to PM me to ASK if you can use it. Simply put my author's name (Ravyn Skye), the idea you are using, and tell others THE NAME of the FIC and/or CHAPTER you are borrowing from. A link to either me or my fics would be super-de-douper nice, but isn't all together necessary XD. I WOULD however, request that you PLEASE PM me telling me where I can find your fic, once it is published, so I can skeedaddle my little behind on over and leave you a super nice REVIEW for you fic! (In FACT, I LOVE when you guys contact me and tell me about your fics so I can go and read them and leave you a nice review. IT MAKES MY DAY to read to read other's writing!)

ODDS AND ENDS:

I know that anime/manga fandom/s has/have a lot of people who use Japanese honorifics all the time...

I AM NOT A -SAMA, or a -senpai, or a -dono, or THE GODS FORBID a -Sensei... I am JUST RavynSkye... I'm JUST a writer in front of a computer who writes as a HOBBY... PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE understand that I am NOT 'above' you. If you MUST use an honorific for me, you may use either -san or -kun (-chan is a bit familiar XD).

I also YES, happen to have a basic understanding of the Japanese language... This does NOT make me your sensei... This does not mean that I am 'above' filling my fics with basic or sometimes even INCORRECT terms that are popular.

DO NOT USE THE JAPANESE IN MY FICS AS AN EXAMPLE OF 'PROPER' JAPANESE, UNLESS IT IS SPECIFICALLY STATED THAT IT ACTUALLY IS PROPER IN THE A/N. PLEASE ASK ME FIRST BEFORE YOU USE JAPANESE FROM MY FICS, AND I WILL TELL YOU THE PROPER JAPANESE TO USE!

For example: 'Anata' for 'Beloved' when really most of the time anata is just a friendly way of saying 'you'. I go with the Japanese people seem to know, For example: 'Musume no Sesshoumaru' vs 'Kono kowa oujo-san no Sesshoumaru-sama desu'. I don't EVER mind answering questions IF I CAN; but, I'm NOT AN "EXPERT" on Japanese.
