1st June, 2009 - State of the Novel, and other things

Dear lord, has it really been almost two years since I've updated this thing? How does this even happen?

It's been a pretty insane time for me, which is six or seven stories in and of itself, but if you're reading this notification, I'm going to assume that you want to know what's up with Beneath A Beating Sun. I can't blame you; I want to know what's up with it, too.

Here's the deal; it's still unfinished. I still want to finish it. I obviously can't promise that it'll be done on any reasonable timeframe; if I could, it would be done and posted already. I do know how it ends, and I have scenes and scenebits written up through the major plot events and up to the end.

I also have three chapters or so which are finished but unposted. (I decided, years ago, to wait to post the final chapters until I could post them in an unbroken run, without a hiatus of months between them. You can see how well that worked out.)

This is the plan: I'm going to post the chapters I have finished over the next few days or weeks. I'm going to try to finish the ones that aren't finished. If you would rather just see the rest of the story in its rough, unfinished form (you know, without risking having to wait three more years before I finish the last chapters), feel free to email me at magistrata (at) gmail (dot) com and I can send you the .rtf file. I write nonlinearly, so it really will be a bunch of disconnected scenebits, phrases, and conversation snippets, but just pretend that you're piecing together an ancient epic from damaged stone tablets. It'll be fun.

The Eensy-Beensy Biography: At the moment I'm a 2.3-decade-old writer and computer programmer who's recently graduated from the University of Iowa with a BA in Linguistics. I'm also a graduate of the Clarion West Writer's Workshop and have one professional fiction publication – I'm working on more.

I love talking about fiction, writing, fiction writing, writing fiction, and several other topics. As a rule, I'm very approachable and welcome emails. I've beta-read a very few stories, and am a lot better at suggesting stylistic/thematic/plot edits than grammar and spelling, though I enjoy editing short(ish), well-crafted stories.

I read a fair amount and write a decent bit. I try to leave constructive reviews when I like something, but I forget on occasion. (I usually remember later and feel really bad about it.) I love reviews on my work, especially the specific and constructive ones. A lot of my development as a writer has been because of fanfiction and the feedback I've received.

I have a LiveJournal at http://draegonhawke.livejournal.com which is often (but not always) filled with fandom ramblings, and a DreamWidth account at http://magistrate.dreamwidth.org which has generally more serious matters.

I am a Wikipedia junkie.

...I like cats?

17th July, 2007 - Ya uzhe pishayu! I neskolko raskazui napisala!

I'm still in Russian, in case you couldn't tell. (And it's still eating my time, in case you couldn't tell.)

Anyway! I've finished a good handful of fics for various canons ("Various" hereby defined as "Life on Mars" and "Doctor Who"), and am agonizingly close to finishing a chapter of Beneath a Beating Sun. There's also wonderful news on my front--the 11th through (hopefully) final chapters now have a beta reader! Fig Newton is helping me unsnarl issues in the chapter drafts I have, and as they fall into place hopefully the last chapters will come more quickly.

I'm confident. (Me too.) (As am I.)

25th June, 2007 - Ya pisala i pisala, no nikogda napisala.

I'm apparently in a Summer Russian Intensive course. Jack would be so disappointed in me.

Beneath a Beating Sun is still coming along, with four chapters finished in draft and one nearly finished, weighing in at about 110,000 words. Yes, a hundred and ten thousand. I'm almost to the point where I have more unposted than posted--wow! Anyway, I'm hoping beyond hope to have it done by the end of the summer. Maybe I'll even have it finished by the one-year anniversary of its posting, but I wouldn't count on that.

In the mean time, I've been poking at a number of smaller fics in a number of fandoms: Life On Mars, Doctor Who, Stargate: SG-1, and a bit of Silent Hill. Those will see posting somewhere, someday. Watch this space! Or, y'know, don't.

2nd December, 2006 - "Ha" is Sanskrit for "Alas"

And this is the point at which I flail around on my keyboard and ask for forgiveness.

Here's the scoop: school brought with it not only lots of homework, but lots of illness as well. Since the end of September I've been in and out of the hospital (mostly for tests and the like--don't worry), and I've been overwhelmed with stuff in general. I've been able to poke at Beneath a Beating Sun, but I haven't been able to do nearly as much work as I'd liked.

Now, my commitment to finishing it is as strong as ever. I'm actually very nearly done with the next chapter. But--and this is one of those double-edged swords--I'm going to hold off on posting anything until I've finished the fic. As in done.

I'm doing this so that even on busy weeks, I can keep to a quick posting schedule. It's not fair to keep you guys waiting a little longer on every chapter. Once I start posting again, I plan to move you all at a nice clip toward the conclusion. (In case you're wondering, my tentative outline has BaBS finishing out at 17 chapters. My TextEdit file is already nearing around 93,000 words. At this point, I've done way too much work on the fic not to finish it. I just need more time.

So, those of you who have me on author alert or have BaBS on story alert will get the news right away when I start posting again. Or, if you want to, you can drop me a line telling me you'd like an email when I post the next chapter. As always, I welcome correspondence--email me at "magistrata" at gmail dot com

16th September, 2006 - In-service day

Chapter 11 is weighing in at a skeletal 3550 words, and I have to focus on how to move the plot smoothly from 10 into 12 before I can flesh it out. There are at least five or six threads that need to be intertwined without tangling or knotting, and Daniel is trying to turn the entire fic into Sophie's World. Which is a lot of fun to write, but also slows the pace considerably.

Middles are always the hardest bits. Starting this, I knew where to put the beginning and I had a fair idea of where the ending would be; I also had a fair grasp of the highlights. Here, forging past chapter 10, I know where I've been and I know where I'm going, but making my way through this middle section is kinda like crossing the Nefud. Pacing is everything, and I have few obvious landmarks. By which I mean, I have a lot of points to hit, but figuring out how they coincide is difficult--I think chapter 11 will be the equivalent of loading the cannons, and 12 will be the big barrage.

Don't worry; it won't all be setup. In fact, there will be a couple shiny candy-like plot developments I know at least a few people will want to see ;).

(Update: 24th September - All of the highlights of the chapter should be written up, which means I just need to fill in transitions, flesh out scenes, and proofread. I'm at 6710 words, and usually add a couple thousand at this stage. Though I make no promises, I'm hoping to have the chapter posted sometime mid-week.)

9th September 2006 - Is that... is that... plot?

Chapter 10 is posted! Between Russian quizzes, SpecFic readings, Sanskrit homework, and having my campus assaulted by crazy cultists, this has been quite the week. I also broke the 10k barrier for an individual chapter, as 10 weighs in at just over 11,700 words. I swear, I planned for them to be 3500-4000 when I started. Then again, I also planned to update twice a week on average.

4th September, 2006 - I babbled incoherently.

Hi, there! If you're here looking for info on Chapter 10 of Beneath a Beating Sun, I can assure you that it's coming. It's just coming slowly. Schoolwork does that to a person. On the plus side--if you consider it a plus side--it's looking like it'll be freakishly long; I'm up to 8500 words in the rough draft and still need to fill in several scenes, an activity which usually adds between 2000 and 3000 words. (...actually this is where I was 3500 words ago. Don't ask me where they all come from.)

Hopefully--though I make no promises--the next couple of chapters will come at a faster rate than this one. This is because I'm working on 10, 11 and 12 simultaneously in order to make sure the plot develops in a way that doesn't make me want to kill things. (Things like pace and timing. One of the advantages of being a member of a race that doesn't perceive time in discrete units is, I imagine, not having to worry about realistic intervals between plot points.)

In the mean time, sorry for the wait! Hope it's not shaking anyone's attention. And hopefully this chapter will be niiiice and exciting--though I think, in a lot of ways, 11 is the one you're waiting for ;).

(Update: 8th September - The chapter is finished in rough draft, weighing in at 11,073 words. Look for it to be posted Saturday or Monday.)

21st August, 2006 - Da! Nyet!

It's the first day of college classes! And I, like the sensible fellow I am, am taking two language classes. At once. (Russian and Sanskrit, for those of you who want to know.) ...I've had one class period and I don't even have the book yet and already Russian is doing its best to kick my ass, so we'll see how this goes.

Because of schoolwork, I may not be able to update as frequently. (And what you do get may be peppered with amateurish attempts at Russian.) Which is a bummer, but unavoidable as far as I can see. Unless someone wants to give me some sort of magical device that can slow down time.
