My Favorite Characters Quatre Raberba Winner. Sink deeper into that irresistibly adorable, teeth-achingly sweet front and you’ll find one of the only characters in the anime world that managed to get me hooked. XD He is technically just two-dimensional like all of other cartoon characters, but he doesn’t feel like he’s one. That’s why I love the creators of GW—the animation is poor, yes, but they managed to flesh out characters that will cling to your cranium for a long time. A lot of fans liked Quatre for his kindness, understanding, intelligence. I look up to those qualities as well, but I adore Quatre more for being the personification of human foible (GW thrives on symbolism, even in characters). There’s a certain splendor in being perfectly imperfect, and the boy’s simply its epitome. Dorothy Catalonia. Repeat what you did to Quatre. Peel off that thick layer of vitriol and bitterness and you’ll see the other side of Dorothy: a brokenhearted little girl. Very much like her namesake (Dorothy Gale from The Wonderful Wizard of Oz), she was lost in the world of OZ. She never really tried finding her way home, just soaked herself in the very romance of wars, effectively but painfully fooling herself for a while. Not so many fans sympathize with this character. It wasn’t so much of an astonishment for me, really—Dorothy is someone who is weaved intricately, and the genius that are the creators are successful in making her an obnoxious enemy-that-isn’t. It has the backwards effect on me. XD All this time, no other female anime character ever dethroned her from being my number one favorite. :) I’M A CARRIER: the 4xD virus. It’s definitely not a pandemic, but we infected little creatures are scattered across the net. XD There are some days when something’s urging me to pair Dorothy with Trowa, or Quatre with Catherine…but I have to admit now: I’m a human spring. I kept on coming back to 4xD. Not everybody thinks that the pairing will work, but hey, not everybody has the same set of eyes and therefore we don’t see the same things. What exactly do I see? A kaleidoscope of possibilities. Well yes, each of us sees a possibility for the pairing we like. The fact that there isn’t any real romance in the anime and that a lot of so-called ‘subtle hints’ are sprinkled over the storyline left fanfic writers to eagerly play around the sandbox and do whatever they want with the borrowed characters. And play I did. Quatre and Dorothy are very different individuals, yet at the same time they are eerily alike. This was shown, though somewhat covertly, in the very few episodes where they established real interaction. The series novelization implied that they are the only ones who know each other inside out, and it all happened in the split second encounter of their minds in the ZERO system. They saw each other’s weaknesses, fears, wishes, secrets…practically everything. Quatre’s initial reaction will be to reach out to Dorothy, and hers will be to run away or cut any connections with him. Dorothy needs a crutch to be able to move on fast with her life, and while I don’t necessarily suggest it should be Quatre’s help, it seems to me that he’s the perfect guy to lend her a hand (the ZERO system connection definitely adds some spice to that). This picture was responsible for the gestation of my very first 4xD babies. Needless to say, I'm very addicted to these two and I'm willing to read a fic, regardless of the genre, with them being characterized and potrayed properly. (OOC is a big no-no for me, although there's been some times that I've been guilty of this.)
