I have a theory, and if I ever do a Bleach fic where Ichigo's Zanpakuto is Zangetsu, I'll probably use it. I believe that Zangetsu's ability is NOT, repeat NOT the Getsuga Tenshou. I believe that the Getsuga Tenshou is a use of Zangetsu's ability, but is not the ability in and of itself. I think that Zangetsu's true ability is the ability to absorb, amplify and release Ichigo's spirit energy, and the Getsuga Tenshou is just one of the ways that ability can be used. Now, if I am right, then it shows a rather sad lack of both insight and creativity on Ichigo's part, because I know I can think of several ways to use something like that.

Example, when he swings Zangetsu around like a flail, which is something he hasn't done since he rescued Rukia, I might add. Think of releasing spirit energy while doing that. Given the continuous nature of it, Ichigo would wind up with a stream of energy coming off of Zangetsu probably around 20 feet long in a circle. The power of the Getsuga Tenshou, amplified by the speed of the circular swing, and Ichigo able to throw the sucker at an enemy like a spinning disk of doom! Or even if he keeps it in close, spinning around that kind of weapon would make it damn hard for anyone to come near him, and it would be extremely easy to whip Zangetsu around to deal with anyone coming in. Plus the damage when it hit someone would be phenomenal, and even if someone parried, the power behind the strike would probably knock them off balance, at lease giving Ichigo the time to get the sword back, and at most giving Ichigo an opening to rip them apart.

That's only one example and see how much it adds to his fighting style? And the Hollow proved that it's possible to use it like a flail in Bankai, he'd lose the range, but the speed would increase dramatically. Whenever someone parries a strike, use the momentum to switch the spin direction around and keep attacking with no time lag to move the arm around. Not to mention the more powerful spirit energy coming off of it for a extremely powerful strike with incredible damage potential. Yeah, that kind of fighting would eat away at the spiritual energy, but by all accounts Ichigo's got an incredible amount anyway, and he generally doesn't use a lot of it. Typically his body's endurance runs out before his spirit energy does.

Just a theory. It certainly would make Ichigo's fights more exciting, though.
