10/27/11 - ON CHAPTER AND STORY LENGTH:

Hello, Faithful Readers!

First off, thank you for sticking with An Introduction to Swirl and Daisy! You have no idea how much it means to me.

I have a confession: Generally I prefer stories that are around 20 chapters long and have chapters under 7,000 words. Which is why it completely blows my mind when I realize I’m now 22 chapters into the story (not including outtakes) and we haven’t even reached junior year yet. Or why I get a little irritated with myself when I end up writing a chapter that is over 12,000 words.

Looking back over the first half of the story, I realize that I’ve been writing and posting it all wrong. If I had to do it all over again, I would be posting the story as five novellas (one for each year of school), instead of one long story. I’ve also found myself restricted by the “First Time” chapter titles, which have prevented me from splitting longer chapters in half. I didn’t really think it through when I started writing, because I expected Swirl and Daisy to only be 7 chapters long.

However, what’s done is done and I’ve decided to stop worrying about it and just write what feels natural. Writing fanfiction is about experimenting and learning, after all.

I don’t know how much longer the story is going to be. If I had to guess, I’d say between 10 - 15 chapters. Hopefully you’ll continue reading and enjoying! Edward and Bella are growing up and there are some fun times ahead.
