Author has written 14 stories for Harry Potter. I'm a femslash fan; I especially like stories featuring Minerva McGonagall (Potterverse) or Kathryn Janeway (ST: Voyager). Would that I were as cool as either one of them. Yes, I know it's silly to be in love with fictional characters, but what can you do? I want stories that are well-written, use standard grammar/spelling, keep the characters canonical as much as possible, and show some sense of literary style. Is that too much to ask? Well, most of the time, yes. I'm afraid there's an awful lot of really bad fanfic out there. Still, I'll at least start reading any story featuring McGonagall or Janeway. But I abandon it pretty quickly if the author has basic grammar and spelling mistakes (particularly with characters' names) or if the characters are too unlike themselves and/or speak like some contemporary American kid (OMG!) But luckily, there are some superb stories in both fandoms. In terms of pairings, I prefer Janeway/Seven and McGonagall/Grubbly-Plank. (That's right, Grubbly-Plank. Unfortunately, there aren't any such stories except the ones I've written myself. But you never know; the pairing could catch on. They seem like such a perfect couple.) Meanwhile, I quite enjoy good MM/Hooch when I can find it (which sadly, isn't often enough), and I'm thinking of writing an MM/Amelia Bones. I'm uncomfortable with stories featuring MM with underage Hermione (although I'll always give any MMHG story a try, just in case I'm lucky enough to find a well-done, thoughtful one). I'm a teacher myself; I don't want to read about teachers abusing their power, no matter what clever justifications are on offer. If teacher/student sex is going to occur, it shouldn't be presented as something unquestionably wonderful and romantic. The story doesn't have to be a judgmental screed; it just needs to examine honestly the issues involved and recognize the moral complexities. I'm not much of a het fan, although I have a soft spot for McGonagall/Snape and Janeway/Paris, and I've become quite the McGonagall/Moody convert. (I think my problems with some het pairings come not from the "het" part per se, but from the way the pairings are written. Take McGonagall/Dumbledore, for instance: it can be done well, but too often, MMAD stories are overly-sentimental or overly-melodramatic or over-loaded with unexamined, even harmful cliches about heterosexual romance, pregnancy, children, and domesticity. The same is true of a lot of Janeway/Chakotay.) Janeway is someone I see as unrestricted in her sexuality; for her, gender's not an issue when it comes to partners. McGonagall is different, though: as far as I'm concerned, she's a dyke like me. So there. (Still, I'm willing to allow her to stray when she wants to. Let's make her a Kinsey 4.75, like me. And an INTJ, also like me. Simplistic, these scales -- I know. But fun.) | |||||||||||
