The Railway Series Evolution Books

Basically, each book is four stories that flow along a storyline.

BOOK 1: Emily the Stirling Single Engine
Dear Friends,

Almost a hundred years ago, an old engine was hidden in a siding surrounded by trees and bushes. She originally worked for the Sodor and Mainland Railway, and is based upon the Stirling Single of the Great Northern Railway. Who is she, and how did she resurface Sodor rails? Read on to find out...

The Author

The Stories
The Times are Changing
Bringing Back Emily
Emily to the Rescue (based on S7's Emily's New Coaches)
A Better View for Gordon (based on same S5 story)
The Rolf's Castle Bridge Disaster

BOOK 2: Unusual Engines (coming April 2013)
Strange Arrivals
Trouble for Dennis (based on S9's Thomas' Day Off)
Neville Proves a Point (based on S9's Thomas and the New Engine)
Saving William

Set during the events of Four Little Engines, during Edward's overhaul in 1951. William is based on the Southern Railway Bulleid Leader Class 0-6-6-0.

BOOK 3: Belle the Mainline Tank Engine
Dear Friends,

In The Eight Famous Engines, the Fat Controller brought the North Western Railway's numbers 1 to 8 to England to prove they were real. Of course, many of us know their side of the story, but what happened while they were away has been overlooked and not written about. Gordon told me that the engine who took his place, Belle, had a lot to talk about. Belle told me about her conflicts with another engine, and I'm glad to say that this engine is still in service today on the Bluebell Railway. You can even find one of Belle's sisters there too. These are the stories of Belle's early days on Sodor.

The Author

The Stories
Gordon and Belle (set during The Fat Controller's Engines)
Down the Wrong Line (based on S12's Gordon Takes a Shortcut)
Megan Tells a Lie (based on S3's No Joke for James)
The Runaway Brake Coach (based on S5's A Surprise for Percy)

BOOK 4: Diesel and the Mainline Engines
Dear Friends,

During the events of "Dirty Work", Diesel told the trucks that Duck said horrible things to Gordon, Henry and James. We all know that wasn't true, but we didn't know the whole story of their names "Galloping Sausage", "Old Square Wheels", and "Rusty Red Scrap-Iron". Now we know the whole story, and we also know how Diesel got sent away before Duck's accident with the barber shop.

I only hope Duck and the big engines aren't too upset...

The Author

The Stories
Galloping Sausage (based on same annual story)
Old Square Wheels (based on same annual story)
Rusty Red Scrap Iron (based on same annual story)
Diesel Off the Quay (based on S6's The World's Strongest Engine)

BOOK 5: Little Western Engines
Dear Friends,

There are four untold stories about the Little Western branchline, dating back to 1989. When I spoke with Donald and Douglas, they told me about Duck's incidents during one week, an engine that Oliver found by accident, and even Toad's runaway!

All those stories were too good to waste, and I wanted to share them all with you. I just hope that Duck, Oliver, Douglas, and even Toad aren't too embarrassed...

The Author

The Stories
Double Trouble for Duck (based on S3's Trust Thomas and Thomas Gets Bumped)
Oliver's Find (based on same S5 story)
Busy Going Backwards (based on same S5 story)
Bulgy Rides Again (based on same S7 story)

BOOK 6: New Diesel Engines
Dear Friends,

After the events of Thomas and the Fat Controller's Engines, the Fat Controller managed to purchase four diesel shunters from British Railways to help in modernizing the Sodor Railway Network a little bit. A fifth was also built at the Steamworks, but for the five diesels, they got off to a shaky start with the other engines. James was quite annoyed when he found out I was to write about his encounter with Arry and Bert, as was Norman and his breakdown, but they were both too good a story to be left untold. Go and see for yourself!

The Author

The Stories
James in the Middle (based on S6's Middle Engine)
Sidney's Mix Up (based on S8's Chickens to School)
Trouble for Norman (based on S12's Heave Ho Thomas!)
Paxton Helps Out (based on S8's You Can Do It, Toby!)

BOOK 7: Ffarquhar Diesel Engines
Dear Friends,

Originally, I was going to call this book "Mavis the Quarry Diesel", but after hearing of the events from Daisy and Paxton, I decided it was better to change the title. There was a collision between a visiting diesel shunter named Andrew and a grocer's van, Paxton's daring rescue at Anopha Quarry, as well as a brilliant ideas Daisy and Mavis each had. Oh, and there's also an old friend of Thomas from the old days named Locke, now working like a really useful engine once more. I like Locke, and I hope you will too.

The Author

The Stories
Overworked
Daisy and the Flowers (based on S13's A Blooming Mess)
Mavis' Crossing (based on S7's Toby's Windmill)
Put Upon Paxton (based on S5's Put Upon Percy)

BOOK 8: Barry the Rescue Engine
Dear Friends,

Before "Thomas and the Fat Controller's Engines", a book about another engine was meant to be written, but was set aside and never saw the light of day. Then I came in, and now some untold stories about the North Western Railway's no. 13 are written. He, of course, had his fair share of mishaps during his trails, as well as the rumors about him being unlucky. For instance, James... Well, you'll have to read the stories to find out for yourself.

The Author

The Stories
Donald and the Flying Kipper (based on S5's Something in the Air)
Barry's Shakedown (based on S11's Thomas in Trouble)
James Goes Backwards (based on S12's Don't Go Back)
Barry, Sheep and Mud (based on S16's Muddy Matters)

BOOK 9: Ivo Hugh the Young Engine
Dear Friends,

In the book New Little Engine, the Skarloey Railway unveiled its new number seven, named after the former Chief Mechanical Engineer, Mr. Hugh. However, with the death of the Thin Clergyman, we never knew about Ivo Hugh's early life on the Skarloey Railway, until I came along. Like any new engine, Ivo Hugh had adventures of his own, like his first passenger run and a very shocking discovery of an engine who used to work at Balladwail Quarry. Ivo Hugh suggested I include one of Sir Handel's misadventures with the snow. I'm sure Sir Handel will be cross if he knows, but he's been too cocky lately, so it should serve him right!

BOOK 10: Thomas and the Mainline Engines
Dear Friends,

In the first illustration of The Three Railway Engines, there were three other engines along with Edward, Gordon, and Henry, who did not have names, or a story to themselves.

That was where I came in, and asked the three engines who they were. They were Alfred, Cecil, and Kirk, all three no longer servicing on Sodor.

Thomas also told me about the very first electric engine on Sodor, known as Vincent, and insisted I put the story in. So, Thomas, Edward, Henry, and Gordon, this one's for you four!

The Stories

Alfred's Predicament (based upon the 1872 Kirtlebridge rail crash)
Trouble at River Hoo (based on the 1847 Dee bridge disaster)

BOOK 11: Molly the Yellow Engine
Dear Friends,

I spoke with a Claud Hamilton locomotive, who was named Molly, and I asked her to tell me of her first few months of service on the North Western Railway.

"What did you do during your early Sodor days?" I asked.

"There were a few exciting events," she said, "helping Henry out with Rocky, when I took Gordon's express..."

"What about James' near miss with a tree?" I added.

Molly giggled. "I don't think he'll be happy if it's in your next book," she said, "but then again, it might serve him right!"

BOOK 12: Adventurous Little Engines
Dear Friends,

Life on the Skarloey Railway is far from dull. After the events of Ivo Hugh's early days in 1997, around the Thin Clergyman's death, little changes have been seen other than Peter Sam's return from the Talyllyn Railway. The stories I was told from around the turn of the century were quite interesting, such as the whole story of Balladwail Quarry being closed down, as well as three old friends of Sir Handel and Peter Sam, those being Mighty and Mac the Fairlie brothers, as well as Monique from the Mid-Sodor Railway. Even Duncan's spook near the bridge was too good a story to waste; see for yourself!

The Author

The Stories
Duncan Gets Spooked (based on same S5 story)
Mighty and Mac (based on S9's Mighty Mac)
Return of an Old Friend
Bertram and the Avalanche (based on S5's Rusty and the Boulder)
