I write het; I read slash, yaoi, yuri, and het. To me, a well written story is a well written story and that is all that matters. I write LotR and I tend to read in anime/manga and tv show fandoms. I'm odd, I know. I have very little time in my life to deal with close minded individuals who can't bother to read and heed warnings on a fic. You don't like something, you can easily just close the window. I OC all the Tolkien elves, if you hate it, don't read it, but don't flame me just b/c OCs are your peeves. You have a back button on your browser, use it. Criticize about plot points and comma splices but do not go off on me because you go, "Yet another oc and Legolas/Elrond/Glorfindel/a twin etc." At LEAST read SOME of the story before you do that. Trust me, I am not putting down suggestions for improvement, I welcome those. But a "delete this crap because you have original characters" despite popular opinion to the contrary, is not a helpful suggestion. Now, done with the fandom warnings.
