Section 4: Things I Hate in Fan Fiction

I'm a 30 year old mother living in West Michigan. I've been thinking up stories for as long as I can remember, but I didn't start writing until I started high school in 1995. I write when inspiration strikes (sometimes stopping work on a story until later if that's what I'm moved to do), and tend to write novella/novel-length stories more than short pieces. I like to take my time with character and plot development, generally spending at least six months on a story (though I have taken much, much longer in some instances).

I always welcome reviews and critiques, but they have to be CONSTRUCTIVE. Simply leaving a review that says, 'This sux!' (or something to that effect) doesn't do anyone any good. I don't normally accept anonymous reviews, but the feature IS currently turned on. Be aware, though, that if I start getting spammed by trolls and bitter readers again, I WILL turn the feature back off. Sorry. Also, I prefer that anyone who leaves critiques have at least one story of their own posted somewhere here on the site. Ideas are always welcome, but if you're going to say 'You should do be doing this or that...,' I want to be able to see what your OWN writing skills are like. I guess it's basically a 'put up or shut up' kind of a situation.

If you have questions or comments, send me a message! I'll respond. Any questions I get will go into a FAQ that I'll post here in my bio. You can find me on FictionPress under the same name if you're interested in my attempt at original works and poetry. Check out the link to my Tumblr page to hear my music. And, don't forget to vote in the poll above my profile. The results will help me with future writing projects. :)

To the people who've read EFX: thank you very much! I'm...not sure why that story would get any traffic, to be honest (the show is more than just a little obscure,...and out there,...which I didn't help it at all), but your readership is much appreciated! ^_^

My Stories So Far:

EFX: The first story I wrote and completed. I started it in 1995 and didn't finish it until 2003. It took eight years to write because there's so much going on, so many characters, and so many different plot points that I really wanted to take my time and get it right. There was a lot of writing, re-writing, cutting of scenes, adding of scenes... The story never would have worked if I didn't spend so much time on it. It's obviously not a perfect story, but I'm happy with the way it turned out, and even if I went back to work on it again today, there's not much more that I could do to it to really make it better.

Phantom Wars:
My first attempt at a semi-short work. I wrote this between 2000 and 2002 when I was part of The Michael Crawford Phantom Movie Campaign. A few of the members of the site created 'up-scrollers' that crossed Phantom of the Opera with Star Wars in a humourous update of what was going on with the Phantom movie at the time, and I got permission to adapt the up-scrollers into short stories for the website. They were originally published at TMCPMC under the pen-name Mishi, The EFX Mistress, but after I found the stories posted on other Phantom fan-sites without my permission or any credit to me, I decided to post them here under my real name in an attempt to reclaim my own work (which no author should ever have to do, IMHO).

Tales from The 10th Kingdom:
My favourite FanFiction universe to write in, all of these 10th Kingdom short stories were written between 2003 and 2005. Most of these pieces were FanFiction challenges that were issued at a T10K message board that I was part of, and are one-shots. Each chapter is its own story, and none of the pieces are connected to each other in any way. New one-shots will be added sporadically as they come to me.

Frozen: A short, one-shot Glee FanFic about Jesse St. James that I wrote in 2010. I make it a point not to write about characters that I don't like, but I was wondering why Jesse acted the way he did in the episode Funk, and after noticing a few things about his character while re-watching the first season of Glee's back nine, I decided to find out for myself just what exactly happened (or, might have happened; we may never really know for sure). ...And apparently this story is somewhat popular, since it received nearly one hundred hits from seventeen countries before its first full day on FanFiction was over.

FAQ:

1. I remember you having more stories than this. What happened?
Yes: there were more stories. Three of the short stories were combined to make the collection Tales from The 10th Kingdom. The two full-length 10th Kingdom stories I removed for the time being since they're part of a larger work that I have yet to finish.

2. Will you Beta my [insert fandom here] story?
Sure! I AM a registered Beta here on the site, and you can check out my Beta bio for more information by clicking on the link above my pic. Everything will be done on a first come/first serve basis. I have certain fandoms listed as preference, but I'll Beta anything that I'm asked to, so don't be afraid to drop me a line,...as long as your story falls within my other guidelines. ;)

Things I Absolutely CANNOT Stand in Fan Fiction:

Authors Who Never Finish Their Stories: If you're writing a multi-chapter story, please, please, PLEASE: DON'T post it until it's finished! If you feel you HAVE to post it while it's a work-in-progress, then at least have every intention of finishing it. Especially if it's a REALLY GOOD story. There's nothing more irritating than finding an amazing story that's only partially done and will never be completed. And if you find that you'll probably never, or can't, finish it (life happens; I know), then at least pull it from the site rather than leave it sit for readers to forever wonder.

Authors Who Only Post Chapters for Reviews: Oh, my God; could people BE more vain and full of themselves? I can't even count the number of unfinished stories that I've read that ended each chapter with, 'I'll only post the next chapter if I get x number of reviews!' (or similar) If you write ONLY for reviews, then you're writing for the WRONG REASONS. Not to mention the fact that you're just plain being needy. Instead just check your Story Traffic Stats and be glad that people are READING the story. Reader stats are better than the number of story reviews, anyway. And then write because YOU WANT TO; you'll enjoy the process more. And if YOU like the story, that's the only review you really need.

Reviewers Who Think That EVERY Story They Read is BRILLIANT: That's not leaving a review, people. It's kissing ass. Especially if a story is horribly written. Do people leave overly-glowing (and often undeservedly so) reviews because they don't want to hurt authors' feelings, or because they have no reading comprehension skills? Because I really don't get it. Saying that a horrible story (for whatever reason) is 'the best story EVER' doesn't help anyone (and on the other side of the spectrum, neither do unnecessary, completely scathing reviews). Reviews are supposed to be constructive feedback for the author so they can work on and try to improve their craft. And you can leave a critical review and still be polite and respectful of the author's feelings. What did you like? What did you feel could be improved? What did you think didn't work? These will help an author identify and fix any problems they may be having with their writing. 'OMG, I LOVE this!' will NOT.

Reviewers Who Think That Every Original Character is a Mary-Sue (or a Gary-Stu): This is especially irritating if the original character is actually very well written and has a realistic personality. I can't POSSIBLY understand why this gets interpreted as a BAD thing. Just because a character 'rings true' doesn't mean that they're author self-insertion in disguise. By traditional definition, a Mary-Sue/Gary-Stu is an overly-annoying, overly-perfect, overly-attractive, can-do-no-wrong character, often with WAY too many super-human/magical abilities, that makes the reader want to put their head through their computer monitor. A well-written, realistic character is NOT a Mary-Sue/Gary-Stu, so give the accusations a rest. ...Unless these reviewers are just bitter because they themselves can't write such a well-defined character and/or are completely against original characters showing up in their beloved fandom?...
