I update my fics whenever I'm very into a fandom. Meaning, that I shift back and forth between my interests quite often so it's hard for me to thouroughly work on many fanfictions and my real (original) work at the same time. I'm currently into Kingdom Hearts so I've been working on a few for that, but I'm abiding by a new rule where I'm only going to post things if I have at least three chapters written. This will prevent people from coming and reading my fics, liking them and then seeing that they haven't been updated for one or two years. I hate it when I'm reading something and see that, so I'd rather not keep doing it myself. However, this has sort of worked against me because as with "How to Lose Seto Kaiba in Ten Days" I have two edited chapters done, but I'm not going to post them until I have a third. So it's kind of working against me at the same time. XP
