My name, Ganga-Zumba Palmares, comes from a Brazilian maroon colony that lasted for centuries. The community was called Palmares and was made up of people of both African and Native (Indian) heritage. The city was more than a half a mile long and consisted of churches, homes and shops. Unfortunately, the Portuguese thought them a formidable threat and had them destroyed. One of their strongest leaders was King Ganga-Zumba, his name derived from the Angolan African word forgreat and the Tupi Indian word for ruler.
