When I write my stories, I always believe and try my best in sticking to the character that appeared in the anime/show as much as possible. After all, it's because of that character that we like reading the fanfics right? Though I say that, occassionally, I do add in a bit of change to the characters in my own fanfiction. =P Sort of a mix and match between the original and my own ideas. I realised that I really love writing romance, not something very in depth and mature, but rather the kind that just starts off where people are usually unsure about their feelings and are trying hard to grasp them, before it moves on to something solid and special. ;)
