I'm Mystic Dragon, of course! :D And, if I wanted to share my real name, I wouldn't have a pen name, now would I? :3 I like to write, obviously. Fanfiction and poetry more than original fiction and non-fiction, but I do have some original ideas and one non-fiction work in the process of being written. Now, back to the topic of writing...I like reviews! I want to know how to improve my stories, and just see if anyone liked them! Just remember...please review responsibly and maturely. In other words, no flames. I don't mind constructive criticism, but flaming is bad and rude. In my opinion, the only fics that deserve flames are blatant Mary-Sue/Self-Insert fics written on a level of a second grader with worse grammar than that person next to them whose native language isn't English. Oh! I don't often reply to reviews...but that doesn't mean I didn't see it (most of the time, at least)! Sometimes, questions are answered in later chapters and such. It's not because I don't care...it's because I often don't have time to sort through what I get. So saying, if you really want a response to a question, drop me a PM. Those get top priority. :) The Worst and Most Overused Plot Devices of Fanfiction By: Mystic Dragon So, when you’ve been writing and reading fanfiction for over ten years, you start seeing certain plot devices that are used so many times that you read one and say “geez, I can do better than that! And be more original!”. This is how a good percentage of fanfiction writers are born. And it’s mostly due to the plot devices that are used a hair-pulling amount of times: -Time Travel Okay, I don’t have too much against these sort of plots, and I’ll occasionally read one, but only on the following condition: It doesn’t have a rewrite of each scene of what it’s based on, with subtle or no differences. About 1 in 100 writers of time travel plot devices are able to do that per fandom. -“Superhero mixture” fics The “super-powerful” character fics. These are often seen in fandoms where the main character is originally not too strong or smart. The device itself isn’t that bad depending on the growth of the character and how powerful s/he is. Most of these fics, however, can be described as “every super hero mashed together” from the get-go. In the Naruto section, a prime example is: Naruto has an undiscovered bloodline on top of having the Kyuubi, the Sharingan, and was raised/trained by the Hyuuga family. -The “not quite Mary-Sue, Mary-Sue” hook-up romance Seen the fics that introduce an original character that helps two main characters to realize that they love each other? That’s what I’m talking about, here. They’re hard to distinguish from Mary-Sue fics, and typically, sound the same in the summery. In 9 out of 10 cases, there’s a possible background character in a fandom that can fulfill the same role, but isn’t used in favor of these ‘originals’. Most don’t even warn a reader of original characters in the summery. -Duex Ex Machina …otherwise known as the “Oh, by the way” fics. This is when a situation looks really bad, and there’s suddenly divine intervention. This is also usually the first step of a typical Time Travel fic, as most of them start out with the characters in a life or death battle (that they are most likely losing), or in an apocalyptic setting. The best example of this used in non-Time Travel fics is Naruto’s Kyuubi. As cool as it is, if it were any other character forced into the corner like that, they’d be dead because they don’t have a demonic creature sealed into them. -Memory loss Probably one of the most infuriating and most used plot devices of all. Usually used in romance writing. I’ve only read one fic out of the hundreds of thousands that uses this device that I’ve been able to stand…and just barely. You know…Character “A” and Character “B” are in love, but Character “A” loses his/her memory and Character “B” has to try to either remind them they had been in love or try to start clean. Since I'm terrible at multitasking, some of them are on hold for now, but I'll come back to them when I'm finished with what I'm currently focusing on. Digimon 02: Perfect World; slight AU, pre-series to series, slight divergence, fills in the plot holes in the season (On Hold) No summaries are available yet for most of them, sorry! Also, all titles are working titles and subject to change. I recently took down a good amount of my fics. This is because I felt that they lacked in one area or another, or were just too awful to attempt to fix. Some dealt with issues that, at that time, I had no experience with, and therefore felt that keeping them online would be an insult to those who had dealt with such situations/issues. A lot of my earlier fics were the ones to go, so most were either Yugioh, Kenshin, or Digimon fics that went down, along with my Yu Yu Hakusho fics (because they were just too OOC). I'm also in the process of redoing/editing some of my old fics. I like to think I pride myself on the quality of my fics...and a lot of my old fics don't meet that standard (especially the ones where I still mixed up "then" and "than"). So, those errors will be fixed. Currently, all stories have been fixed except for "Good Friends" (DBZ), and "The Past, Present, and Future" (YGO). Artwork: I like doing drawings for my stories; I find it fun, and sometimes, it helps me to visualize characters better, particularly if I'm writing an AU and their appearance and-or age has thus changed.
