So what's the deal with the self censoring?

My first answer to that would be to ask Fanfiction.net. They do not allow MA rated material. However, I sure they have some sort of legalese or something (it may be in the TOS, go read that) but just for expediencies sake, in short it says on the guidelines page you can't. Period. End of Story, etc.

So my second (and more fitting) answer is: once bitten, twice shy. I had one of my stories taken down for explicit content and I was warned that further infractions would result in my account being suspended. So I tend to take those types of warnings to heart and now I am much more careful to avoid similar experiences in the future.

Why not just alter your stories for posting on this site?

I don't DO PG-13. Have you looked at my list of stories? Notice the pronounced scarcity of WAFF pieces. Like almost less than 10% of what I write. Once again I will re-iterate, if you want to read my stuff uncensored go to my blog or AO3 and follow me there. I mean really, it's just a click away...

Why do you still post here?

Readership. The stats prove to me that that are far more visitors to Fanfiction.net than any other fanfiction site I've visited. I greatly appreciate all the fans who have subscribed directly to my blog or follow me on AO3 but if not for the traffic from Fanfiction.net I might still be posting into the void.

Greetings from Sin City! I am female if you haven't guessed by now. Amazingly I've made it to my early 30's and I am married to a very understanding man (I love that he's not weirded out by my slashy hobbies.) I work in the finance field and have an 'interesting' job with people that confound me to no end. I'd love to publish a book someday. I’m not the most social person but if you leave an awesome review or PM me I always respond. Needless to say, like every author on this site I thrive on feedback from my audience. I signed up for Fanfiction.net a long time ago but did not start posting until early 2012. However, most of what I write is always posted on my WordPress blog and on Archive of Our Own (AO3) first due to FanFiction.net's policy on MA content. Everything I post here is censored.

Not new to writing in general, if all the half written novels during NaNoWriMo are any measure. I have to say that sometimes I am a terrible procrastinator. So just as a warning – It could take me forever to finish a fic. *Sorry* :-) I never abandon them though; I'm too neurotic to allow them to be unfinished. I have an evil writing style that is not really conducive to completing projects quickly. I tend to jump around from fic to fic as the ideas strike me. I may not write on one for long periods of time if I don't have the proper amount of inspiration.

I will always update at the bottom of my profile on the status of an in-progress story. It may not show any progress but at least you’ll know it’s on my mind. My Wordpress blog also captures snippets of my insane ramblings, just in case you want to know where this stuff comes from. You can find a few pages there that have all my current story summaries. I have a Facebook page and a Twitter account if people are interested enough to converse with me. I also have a FictionPress account that has some original stuff posted on it. It has some poems I wrote in my depressed youth that I love sharing as well as the first chapter of the novel I wrote for NaNoWriMo 2012 that is in dire need of editing. I have a bunch of links at the bottom if anyone is interested. And of course here is the shameless plug for my Etsy store.

So just a few notes for anyone reading my fics or anyone who wants to know what types of fics I like. I like m/m slash and yaoi. If you don't know what these are then there is a good chance you shouldn't be reading anything of mine. Most of my fics will usually be m/m slash and yaoi. I tend toward the angsty. All of my characters bareback unless protection is part of a plot device. Just remember kiddos in RL condoms and lube! Quite a bit of it will be rated M. I try to stick with the canon, but if not then my fics will have a warning. I'm not fond of making up character details in ongoing series for the sole purpose that they may be contradicted later. I can't stand main character death unless it happens in the original material and sometimes not even then (ex. Severus Snape.) I do not like Original Characters (OC). Also, I am such a hater for Mary Sues and it is kind of hard [for me] to write an OC without it smacking of such, though I will write them for other people.

You will probably not see a lot of het writing from me unless it's blatant pwp or there is a m/m/f threesome going on. I have a very hard time writing for it since girls are so complicated and silly. I get too much of that in RL to want to write about it. And yet another reason that you will probably never see any femslash/yuri from me – girls are squishy ... Anyway, you've got to be a close personal friend with a vivid imagination, patience and many *favours* for me to even consider it.

I generally like happy endings after all the angst I put my characters through. There are so few of them in life. I think bad ends are sort of explanatory or expected if it's between two opposing characters. In addition to my distaste of BDSM (I like sexy romantic angsty shit) I am also developing a serious aversion to whump. I think the reason I am so opposed to BDSM is because I have a hard time tolerating anything that resembles humiliation. I was a geek growing up so you can imagine. As for my growing aversion to whump, I have to add an addendum to that. Whump for its own sake I hate. Whump leading to a happy ending I can tolerate. Just when it’s dealt in spades I tend to get a little turned off. So I guess that really just kind of makes me partial to hurt/comfort.

Fandoms:

Castle – So the initial draw to this show was of course Nathan Fillion as the lead character, Castle. But I think it was the Irish blue eyes of detective Ryan that did me in. He's simply adorable with those puppy dog eyes, his slightly geeky characteristics and it helps that he's a classy dresser. It's so easy to turn the bromance between him and Esposito into something more.

Criminal Minds – To say I’m obsessed with this show is a bit of an understatement. I think I powered through six and a half seasons in about a month or so before I caught up to the current episodes. Then I had to re-watch it to take notes. Yes, I am building an epic treatise consisting of character profiles and a show timeline just so I can write fanfiction for the show semi-accurately. I think the subject matter has always held some allure for me as well. I am partial to crime dramas and serial killers are morbidly interesting. So, what is with my clichéd attraction to Spencer Reid? He is arguably the most fascinating character on the show. So I think I can be given a pass for liking him so obsessively. Now the question of why Hotch and not Morgan? Well that’s easy. I don’t like macho. Morgan is macho, Hotch is alpha (there is a difference), and not to mention stoic and somewhat complicated. I like the strong silent type.

Doctor Who and Torchwood – I have finally made it to series four of the 10th Doctor’s arc, and since it's been a while I might have to re-watch Torchwood. It’s kind of funny, but I actually watched Torchwood before I started watching Doctor Who. Unless you count watching Tom Baker put him through his paces in my youth (on VHS of course.) I was having a hard time with 10 cause he is so darn cheeky but I think he is growing on me. I have to say it is really nice that I am catching up just because I can finally get all the fandom references.

Grimm – It’s amusing. Since it’s only in its second season there are so many possibilities for it. I was also excited by what seems to be an epic plot going on in the background. I’ve liked Sasha Roiz ever since he played Sam Adama in Caprica (which got way too complicated then was cancelled) so it is nice to see him play such an intriguing character as Sean Renard. Nick Burkhart is also affably cute and Monroe has to be one of the most likeable characters on the show. Between him and Sergeant Wu they are consummate scene stealers.

Hannibal – Oh, oh. I love this show. I think the casting is most appropriate. My husband says I'm spellbound when I watch this, and I have to say it's because it is pretty intriguing. The overtones, the misdirection, the psychological manipulation all make me wonder what's going to happen next. It's very rare that a show isn't predictable for me and even though I have read Thomas Harris' novels it still is a pleasant surprise to have a fresh take on the material. That and it is terrible that I am having food feels from all the dishes Hannibal makes.

Firefly – I’m an unrepentant Browncoat. I was one of those fans that actually participated in letter writing campaigns to get the show back on the air. I almost died of happiness when the movie was announced. I just love this show. The characters and storylines are so engrossing I just cannot fathom why it got cancelled. It doesn’t help that I also have a huge fangirl (though I’m not much of a ‘girl’ anymore) crush on Malcolm Reynolds and Simon Tam that rivals my current one on Spencer Reid. The funny thing is that after watching CM and Firefly I find there are a lot of parallel character traits between the two young doctors.

NCIS – This was my favourite crime drama for a long time. It’s funny cause I stopped somewhere around the fifth season (and I'm still stagnated there.) I think I was so annoyed with Jenny for screwing Tony over that I got a little disgusted. Even for being so cocky, I like Tony quite a bit, maybe that’s why I’m so enamoured of partnering him with my favourite guy, Gibbs. Ah, as Abby calls him “the silver haired fox.” He’s another one of my strong silent types and he used to be a Marine. The awesomeness equation couldn’t get any better. On a personal note, because of Abby, I discovered Android Lust. I do recommend.

Psych – This is such a hard show for me to watch, it's got so many embarrassing moments that I cringe continuously. The humor is so quirky that I just love it. I think if I would compare myself to anyone on the show it would be Gus. He may be the straight man (comedy-wise) in the duo but he's got his own peculiar way that he's still an odd duck. I'm sure it won't be a surprise to anyone that I am, of course, most partial to Carlton "Lassie" Lassiter.

Sherlock – Ooh, I see why this series has 22K fics written about it on FanFiction.net even though its only got six episodes in existence. I think I counted at least four references to Sherlock and John being a couple within the first 50 minutes of the first episode. It also kind of helps that the top three male characters are suitably attractive in their own ways. I do have to say that DI Lestrade is by far my favourite, but that might be due to the fact that I adore him in the movie Maurice. I also see why there are so many threesome fics written about this series, interesting and challenging.

Supernatural – This series started me back down the path of the television viewing public. It has all the elements you could wish for in an adventure series. I remember being into the occult in high school and this series brings back a lot of nostalgia for me. I also might like it cause there’s a trio of hot guys in it, and that’s the point isn’t it? I also want Dean’s car but have neither the money to buy a mint one nor the mechanical skills to restore a junker. I think most of the fanfiction that I write for this is probably not in a fixed point in the SPN timeline. Unless I want to include Benny, then I pretty much have to set it in S8. And as far as other things go, I like Castiel having his badass angel powers but I also don't want him to be insane/bad.

The Following – Okay! I'm irritated with this because it's become so unbelievable. The FBI is SO dumb in this series, I guess I am just too used to the awesomeness that is CM. As far as the fandom is concern there is a potential for relationship between Joe and Ryan before the FBI agent hooked up with Carroll's wife. However, I am resigned to think that the end of the first season both Joe and Ryan are going to die. Then there is the whole Jacob/Emma and Paul/Jacob thing that became a Paul/Jacob/Emma thing. That came out of left field for me, and it sort of doesn't help that I don't care for Emma at all. And now that Paul has died and Jacob seems to have his hate on for Emma I can't wait to see what he does about it. Seriously waiting for Jacob or Claire kill her. I might forever be in despair of my silly self wanting some Ryan Hardy x Mike Weston action.

White Collar – Something about Neal’s eyes captivate me. It’s not that I find them alluring or gorgeous, in fact, when I first started watching the show they creeped me out a bit. I guess they just grew on me. I like how Caffery is charming and flirty in the first season but never crosses the line cause he’s still in love with Kate. However, Peter is more my style. He’s not as charming as Neal but has some pretty dazzling smiles. The one thing that makes writing for this series hard is Peter’s wife Elizabeth. I can find fault with most of my subjects significant others (like Hotch’s wife Haley from CM) but El is absolutely charming.

It really does tie me up in knots when I am reading something and I’m like, “Oh, not what I thought was going to happen. I thought the summary said Character 1 was going to do Character 2 and not the other way around.”

I Didn’t Really Watch Television for Like 3-8 Years

Yeah, for about 3 years I didn’t watch television; too busy leading a Martha Stewart life of domesticity. And for the 5 plus years before that, it was minimally so, because I was really into anime. So I think about the only shows I took the time to watch with any alacrity were NCIS and anything else USA had on as re-runs while I was visiting or living with my mother at her house. I really like the Food Network and PBS if that counts. Anyhoo, somewhere in the beginning of 2012 I started watching network television shows. So if you want to thank anyone or anything for my fanfiction it should probably be my husband for introducing me to Netflix and Hulu.

US English versus English in the rest of the world

Hey all you international writers out there! If you’re writing for a US series (say Criminal Minds) you might want to consider the words and expressions you will never hear US speakers use. We don’t use the lift, it is an elevator. It is not a buggy but a shopping cart (or just cart), none of us live in a flat thought some of us may go home to an apartment. And none of us have a boot, windscreen or bonnet on our cars. Just sayin’

My Cultural Awareness

So at odds with the bit above this, I am all for UK spellings. I like colour, grey and realise as opposed to color, gray and realize. It’s just the way I learned how to spell them as I was growing up. I was born in the US but I spent the first 13 years of my life living overseas. I’ve been to a Dutch school, a British School and a US School and at one point even attended a “Westernized” school full of Aussies, Brits and Asians. So it goes to say that my vocabulary is a bit strange. Also, I have an amazing degree of ignorance when it comes to pop culture and slang. I spent most of my childhood growing up alongside adults so most of the slang I know dates back to the 70’s. As for pop culture, I don’t watch reality TV or TMZ and I couldn’t tell you what celebrity is banging who or what they wore to so and so award show, etc. I just don’t care about that stuff so I have remained wilfully ignorant.

Music

I listen to music a lot. A good portion of my fanfic ideas and titles come from it. I also get some from Reddit, but I don’t want to go off into a twenty page tangent about how much of a black hole that site is ... Well, as far as my taste in music, you’re going to see a lot of classic rock and alternative references. I live for Led Zeppelin and Nirvana. It might also be why I like angst so much. Most of the stuff I listen to is along those lines.

Adultery and Polyamory

I actively try never to put my characters in a position where they commit adultery unless the other partner in the relationship has already cheated on them or if the they are a horrible horrible person (abuse, etc.). If the male character is in a committed relationship with another female character (that I can’t chalk up to denial) I will find a way to quietly remove her from the picture, usually through divorce or breakup. I am just not comfortable with adultery. On the other hand, polyamory is fine by me since it is consensual, and by its definition means love between several individuals.
