A Little Bit About Lucidscreamer

I have been writing fan fiction for almost thirty years. My earlier work (stories, fan poetry, fan art, and cartoons in the Dark Shadows, Star Trek, and Forever Knight fandoms) was published in such fanzines as The World of Dark Shadows, Inside the Old House, Spaceshot, Orion, Wolf Tracks, The UFP Connection, Knight Beat, and The Collective. I have also published poetry in Brussels Sprout: The Journal of Haiku, Dreams of Decadence, In Darkness Eternal, Shifter!, The Writer's Journal, Writers' Exchange, Night Wind, and other small press magazines/journals. In the 90s, I worked as a social expressions writer, creating slogans for buttons, magnets, and bumperstickers.

Yes, I know my username is "vivid" (as one reviewer put it). Don't get overly excited about it. It's just a pun on "lucid-dreamer". (I have lucid dreams fairly often, and they are most usually nightmares. There are downsides to having a vivid imagination! Fortunately, once I become aware that I'm dreaming -- the "lucid" part of the equation -- I can take control of them. I could do without the nightmare part of the whole thing, though.)

My current fandom obsession is Yugioh and my favorite "pairing" is Yami/Yugi. Oddly enough, Puzzleshipping is my first "ship". I've always been more of a gen writer than a romance writer (or reader), but YGO changed all that in a pretty big way. Just look at all the YY/Y romance novels I'm writing. My favorite character is Yami (aka Atem, or whatever you prefer to call the Pharaoh) -- hardly surprising given my passion for all things ancient Egyptian (though I have to admit Dan Green's wonderful voice plays a huge part in my love for the character) -- and I have a tendency to do terrible things to Yami in my fic. He always gets a happy ending, though. Most of my YGO stories are either Yami/Yugi slash or gen, and Seto seems to find a way to weasel into all my plots. Since writing SotN, I've also developed a fondness for writing Ryou Bakura. Yugi (and Ryou) will always have a backbone in any fic I write.

Citrus, Warning Labels, & Review Responses

1. No "lemons" will be posted on this site, as it is against the terms of service (and, frankly, I'm not all that comfortable writing them). There may, however, be "lime."

2. I warn for common, known triggers, as well as for character death (of canon characters). The only exception to this would be characters that are known to be deceased in the original canon. I do not anticipate ever writing about rape, explicit depictions of domestic abuse or sexual violence; however, should those things appear in one of my stories, rest assured that I will warn for them. If you have concerns about one of my stories, please feel free to PM me with your concerns or check the appropriate thread in my Lucidfic forum to see if they're already addressed in one of the story FAQs.

3. In regards to reviews: I love them, and I adore readers who leave them. :) I have always tried to respond to every review I receive, but I am slightly altering my long-standing policy. From now on, I will not be responding to reviews that are nothing more than some variation on "update soon!" While I appreciate the sentiment behind such reviews, I don't feel they really require a reply. What does one say to "update soon!" except "I will when I can!", anyway? So, take it as read that I will update when I can -- and that your desire for a new chapter has been taken into account. I will continue to respond to all other reviews, though it sometimes takes me several days (or even weeks) to get to them all. If you really need a quick response, feel free to PM me with your question or concern. Finally, while constructive criticism is always appreciated, I do not respond to "flames". I will mock them on my LJ, though. ;)

To make it easier to read my various series, here are the (fan)fictional "universes" I've created, with the individual stories listed in the recommended reading order.

My Yu-Gi-Oh! Post-Canon Series (All of these stories presume a romantic relationship between Yami and Yugi. Unless otherwise noted, these stories are complete.):
...Whom the King Loves: A love story in 50 sentences -- Briefly explains why Yami has his own body and is still hanging around Domino City instead of living it up in the Field of Reeds, and why he and Yugi are a couple.
Sweet Nothings -- Yami and Yugi negotiate terms of endearment. (Humor/romance)
Pharaoh -- Yami needs Yugi to remind him that not all games have life-or-death consequences. (Humor/friendship)
Little Things (Can Mean So Much) -- Yami has always been a fast learner. (double-drabble; part of "30 Kisses")

The "Eternal Nile" Series (YGO AU):
Shadows on the Nile -- While searching for his missing grandpa, Yugi encounters a mysterious cult, the tomb of a lost pharaoh -- and an intriguing archaeologist named Dan "Yami" Viridian. COMPLETE
Reflections in the Nile (sequel to SotN; not yet posted) -- After escaping death in a lost tomb, Yugi vanishes in a swirl of dark magic. The search to find him leads Yami to discover more about his own memories and magic -- and to the fulfillment of a destiny set into motion thousands of years ago in ancient Egypt. (Still in the "floating around in the back of my head" stage.)
Found and Lost -- (prequel to SotN) Sugoroku Mutou makes the find of a lifetime, but loses his freedom in the process, setting events into motion that will lead to his grandson Yugi finally discovering his own destiny -- and love. Complete.

Fan fiction set in my Eternal Nile universe, but written by other people (with permission):
The Ties of Friendship (prequel to SotN, authorized fanfic written by kittchaos) -- Having a psychic front seat to Mokuba Kaiba's kidnapping was only the beginning of Yugi's bad day, but it was also the start of some life-long friendships.
Executive Decision (sequel to The Ties of Friendship, authorized fanfic in my SotN universe, written by kittchaos) -- More pre-SotN Yugi and Seto friendship fic.

The "Shadow Wars Chronicles" series (YGO AU):
Chariots of the Gods -- Sci-fi AU. The fate of the worlds depends on a young man, his shattered soul, and a golden puzzle. Ancient magic, alien invaders, giant robots. WIP Contains depictions of futuristic war, PTSD, and action/violence. Some non-graphic allusions to child-abuse (Gozaburo Kaiba & his highly dysfunctional approach to child-rearing). Eventual Yami/Yugi romance. Be aware that the romance is a subplot, not the point of the story, and is very slow-moving, as I want to build their relationship at least somewhat realistically.
Fingerprints of the Gods -- sequel to CotG. The war continues on a new front, and things heat up between Yami and Yugi.

The "Shadowriders of Pern" series (YGO/DoP Fusion AU):
A projected series of connected short stories that will fuse Yu-Gi-Oh! with the Dragonriders of Pern universe. AU for both universes. (No canon Pern characters are scheduled to appear. Seto Kaiba of Pern is not part of this series.)
First Impressions: Yami -- Candidates Seto and Yami both hope to Impress a bronze dragon, but Yami, at least, is in for a big surprise... (Will contain definite departures from Pern canon)
First Impressions: Seto -- Same as above, but focusing on Seto. I may do several of these for different characters.
Unexpected (working title) -- The weyr deals with the consquences of Yami's unique Impression.
First Impressions: Yugi -- One year later, Yugi Impresses a dragon of his own... and meets an unusual dragonrider named Yami. (eventual Yami/Yugi)

The "Twist of Fate" series (Dark Shadows AU):
A Fate Worse than Undeath? -- Angelique did not curse Barnabas to eternity as a vampire. She has something much worse in mind...
Lorelei -- Barnabas has fled Collinwood, but he cannot outrun Angelique's curse... or Angelique.
The Winter Wild -- Driven to despair by what the curse has forced him to do, Barnabas seeks a desperate escape from his fate -- but Angelique's curse holds an even darker twist in store for him.

Soul Partners -- My Puzzleshipping C2 contains some of the very best Yami/Yugi stories on this site, as well as some Yami-and-Yugi friendship-oriented gen fic. All genres. I'm fairly picky about decent grammar and basic writing mechanics, so please don't suggest a fic that contains a ton of errors. I'm willing to overlook some mistakes if the plot or characterizations grab me hard enough; otherwise, they bug me too much to let me really enjoy the story. NO FIC CONTAINING GRAPHIC RAPE or SPOUSAL ABUSE will be considered, so please do not suggest them.

Updating

I write fan fiction because I enjoy creating stories about characters that I love and/or want to explore in ways the canon may not allow. Writing fan fiction is a fun hobby for me, but I only write when the mood strikes, so updates may be sporadic. Yelling at me for taking a long time between updates does not encourage me to write more/faster; in fact, it has the opposite effect. Most years, I participate in NaNoWriMo, so fic posting/updating is usually slow-to-nonexistent during the month of November.

Unless otherwise noted, none of my stories are abandoned. Some just take longer than others to complete. I do NOT post author's notes as stand-alone chapters. Ever. Doing so is against FFN's posting guidelines. Please do not review or PM me telling me to do so.

I have a variety of health problems, including systemic lupus (SLE). Sometimes, writing is not going to happen. So, I decided a forum would be the easiest way to keep everyone up-to-date on what's happening with my stories. If I haven't updated in awhile and you're wondering what's going on, please check the forum for story status. You can also use the forum to ask questions about any of my stories posted on this site. FAQs are up for most of my posted fiction. If you're curious about me, I have a LiveJournal (see: homepage link above).
