Final Fantasy 7: The Story -- My Four-Year Project
On June 22, 2004 I uploaded the first chapter of my four-year project, Final Fantasy 7: The Story. This project would be to novelise the entirety of the Final Fantasy 7 game into a novel. I had attempted to write up the game once before, but became bored after reaching the first levels of Shinra HQ. In 2004, whilst I was sat at my computer in college with nothing else to do, I took out my previous file and began writing it again from the beginning with the aim of finishing it.
When I started to write this fic, I made the decision that I would use the original game script instead of writing my own. My reasons for this were that I was not very good at coming up with original script, since I am far better at writing description rather than speech, and was worried that I would become horrendously out of character and totally destroy the characters. Besides, I also believed that the original game script IS the essence of the story, and I saw no reason to change what is already a damn good script.
I was worried at first that using the original script would cause me to get many flames in my fic, such as calling me unoriginal and a thief. However, thankfully, my wonderful reviewers accepted my use of the script and even praised me for it, something for which I will be forever grateful. To make up for this I chose to include some original scenes of my own, such as the Catching a Chocobo incident, and the arrival on the continent of Wutai in the plains I named the Korei no Senshi (I have forgotten what this means XD).
And so the project began.
Anybody reading the fic for the first time will notice that my style of writing has changed dramatically since I first started writing to the chapters I write now. When I first began the fic I kept myself STRICTLY to the game--doing only what the characters did, only adding inner thoughts when I thought I could keep them in character. Now I add many original actions and thoughts and suspicions, and my battles have become a little more flavoured ever since watching Advent Children for the first time and realising they can break the laws of gravity and all science.
One thing I have always promised since starting this novelisation is that I would complete it. Many people have told me how people have started off novelisations of FF7 and other Final Fantasy games, but abandon them less than halfway through. I was determined that I would not leave this fic finished, especially after so many people praised my fic and kindly asked for more. It is a promise I continue to keep, even if my updates have slowed down somewhat.
And so we have entered the third year of the fic's existence, and I'm still working on it. The first instalment was completed on March 21, 2005, and the second instalment began just a few days later. That instalment was completed on January 26, 2007--the start of this year. Seven months on, I'm only four chapters in, but I am still working on it. I will most likely not achieve my aim of completing the third and final instalment by the end of the year, but I will work to complete it before June 22, 2008--the day when it will be four years to the day that I started it.
I will finish my endless babble now and leave you with the current list of works incorporated into my Final Fantasy 7 novelisation. This is a shortlist of everything I have written so far, including what is to come in the pieces I have not yet written. I hope you enjoy reading my fic, and continue to read it to its completion.
