To avoid criticism do
nothing, say nothing, be nothing. – Elbert Hubbard, US author (1856 - 1915)
Those who put “no
critiques” or “no flames” in their story summaries would do well to
read this
quote. To explain it plainly, the only way you're going to avoid
critiques on your work is to take all your stories down, leave them on
your hard drive, and never show them to anyone. Are you willing to go that far to avoid bad reviews?

PAST HISTORY
I came across the hobby of writing in
September of 2000, when I first began writing video game strategy
guides for the website www.gamefaqs.com, under the alias Minesweeper. I enjoyed three years of
writing there, and made a lot of new friends. However, as my
senior year of high school ended in May 2003, I realized I was starting
to find strategy guide writing dull and boring. I wanted to move
onto something new.
In the summer of 2002, I found the Aftermath Series by MTP to read. This was a very long series
of fanfics, based on the Satam universe, which is one of many Sonic the
Hedgehog universes out there. However, I had never really given serious
thought about writing fanfiction. In the summer of 2003 though, with my interest
in guide writing fading and the need for a new hobby rising, I drew up plans for my first Sonic fan character and
a fanfic to base around him. In case you haven't guessed already,
that first character was Nail Strafer. His first fanfic, Sonic
Assassin 1, was completed in August 2003 after about two weeks of
work. Sonic Assassins 2 and 3 followed up over the next six
months. I never did bother to get a fanfiction.net account until
the next summer of 2004, and I'm glad I didn't so I had more time to
improve. Compared to what I'm doing now, I think pretty much all
of the Sonic Assassin series stunk. However, if anyone is
interested in seeing them, just get in touch with me and I can send
them to you or post them here. Just remember though, since they
were my first fanfics, they suck...hard.
PROJECTS
Anyway,
my current project is a series of fanfics called the
Freedom Series, which are based in the universe of the Sonic
Movie. I decided to use this setting for my stories, since a lot
of things during the movie were left unexplained. Thus, I could pretty
much let my creativity flow a lot more than I could in more established
universes.
Furthermore, it would be less redundant than adding another group of
fanfics to the massive pile of Satam fanfics, Sonic X fanfics, and
Sonic Adventure fanfics. The series should span about six fanfics, and
I'm currently in the process of finishing up Number 5: The Wrong
Side.
However,
once again I find myself losing interest in writing, and in this case
it's doing stories. I've discovered my life feels a lot less
stressful when I don't have to expend energy thinking about how I'm
going to handle my stories. College for me is about to end, which
means I'll soon have to start searching around for jobs, and a place to
live on my own. With all this on my plate, the last thing I want
right now is by far stress. Adding onto that, recently I've also
noticed that my interest in Sonic is at an all time low. I could
play any of the new Sonic games for free since my little sister's
bought them, but I still don't do it. I'd much rather turn on my
Xbox 360 and play Need for Speed Most Wanted or Dead Rising, all of
which I gave up quite a bit of money to buy. Not to mention,
fanfic writing does eat up a lot of free time, and it doesn't exactly
return any dividends for the work I do on it.
Between all things, it's looking like Freedom Series 6 is going
to be the end of my run here. I wish I could have found the
motivation to realize the full potential of the series, but it looks
like that's not going to be the case. So sorry, to those of you
who enjoyed the ride I've given you. May you find other stories
out there to keep you entertained.
