hello

I am a college student majoring in Chemical Engineering and minoring in Japanese. I like french fries with mayonnaise, but I despise ketchup. I play the flute and am learning how to play the bagpipe. I love dragons. My favorite color is green, but I'm also quite partial to purple, black and blue. I only wear makeup for weddings, theater, and Halloween. Is this a sufficient number of factoids about me, then? :)

I have a dA account with the same username, sans the space between ‘sargent’ and ‘snarky,’ so if you’re curious to see my artwork and some more of my writing please go there. I also have an LJ - under the name sargent_snarky - where I ramble on about life and also post more of my FFIV fanfic.

I am, in fact, a girl, by the way, and I adore chatting about my favorite fandoms, so please feel free to drop me a line, if you so desire. I'm really quite friendly and rarely bite, I promise!

My (fanficion) Pet Peeves:

Comma Splices. When you have two complete sentences, you do NOT join them with a comma. No, instead, you either separate them with a period, join them with a semi-colon or join them with a comma and a conjunction (for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so). This is the single most common grammatical error I find, even in otherwise well-written stories.

Parallelism. Basically, this is consistency across sentences. Say, if you begin a sentence addressing it to the generic ‘you’, you ought not to switch to ‘one’ halfway through. The same applies with tenses and verb-forms. Ask your English teacher about it.

Bad Romance. Most romance is bad romance. Don’t deny this – you know it to be true. Sure, cheesy, unbelievable drivel might be your guilty pleasure, but please don’t argue that it makes for a quality story. It doesn’t. And there is a great lot of bad romance in both the slash and the het sections.

Gratuitous Sex Scenes. I tire of watching movies (or reading books & fanfic, for that matter) where I am forced to watch a pointless sex scene between two characters. Rarely do sex scenes add anything to the plot or character development, and it would be just as easy - indeed, easier - to have a tasteful fadeout or otherwise let the audience know that sex has happened without forcing us to sit there and watch it. Not all of us are voyeurs, and some of us would like to get a move on to the actual substance of whatever we're watching or reading - assuming, of course, it has any to begin with. I applaud the recent film The Curious Case of Benjamin Button for avoiding this entirely - it had a lot of sex in it, but it was all very tasteful; they let you know what happened without shoving it into your eyesockets. I appreciated this quite a lot.

When People Do Not Use The Subjunctive. I wish I were at the beach. If he were taller, then he would be on the basketball team. Yes, those two sentences are grammatically correct. I don’t feel like explaining the English subjunctive – just google it. But seriously, the fact that no one pays the slightest bit of attention to this grammar rule annoys me.

Slashing of Best Friends. My favorite relationship to read about is that of two male best friends/brothers who are close. This relationship is one thing that attracts me to things like Supernatural, Numb3rs, Sherlock Holmes, and so forth, and I simply do not like it when people destroy the beautiful thing that is their friendship and turn it into a romance - and often a bad romance, as mentioned above, or PWP. Platonic love and romantic love are both love, and they are both beautiful things, but they have different qualities - different feels to them. And because generally I adore the characters as they are canonically, I hate to see them and their dynamics changed. Besides, when they're actual brothers, romance between them is incest and is - in my opinion - just plain wrong. That said, there are exceptions to this one - they're just rare.

Beta Reading

I’m afraid that, for the most part, I don't beta read anymore, because I often don't have the time or inclination - especially during school, where I do enough proofing of my own work just for class.

(The only exception is for Venus Smurf.)

Extreme thanks and kudos and accolades to Tsukasa-Magic for betaing Twilit Souls for me, by the way!

Reviewing

I do not always review stories, even if I really like them for multiple reasons. I may be reading the story during a brief free moment or when I’m tired, or I may be in a mean and nasty mood and wish to spare you a snappish series of less-than-kind remarks. Or perhaps I simply don’t have anything to say but am curious as to how and if you’ll continue something. Therefore, if you receive an Author Alert or Favorite from me but no review, my apologies, but that’s just how it’s going to be.

Also, when I do review, I like to leave thorough, thoughtful reviews, and if I am crunched for time, am especially tired, or am multitasking, chances are good that I won’t be able to do that, and I don’t want to cheat you out of the constructive criticism you deserve as an author. Therefore, please don’t take a lack of reviews as an insult. If you’re on my alerts, I am definitely reading your work, and I like it.

That said, I really love receiving reviews myself, and while I can’t force you to write them, I sincerely appreciate each and every one. They are very encouraging, and those that give constructive criticism are extremely helpful.

General Disclaimer

As I sometimes forget to put disclaimers on my fanfiction, I hereby declare that I do not own any part of any of the fandoms for which I write. I make no profit by this, either.
