My pen name is based on a character from En Garde (e-mail turn based game) over a decade ago, Jean Luc Pitard. His name was a joke from the saying "hoisted on his own pitard" meaning blown up by his own explosive (pitard or alt- petard) or having a scheme blow up in your face. Not as funny with all of the suicide bombers in the world, but it was a hoot back then as it played on a certain character from Star Trek NG who was 'da bomb' for some good friends. The term was current in the seventeenth century, when the game is (usually) set. More info on the game can be found at my friend's site. (Currently this link seems to be out of order, it looks like the software hates the tilde that goes in front of "aquazoo" where your browser might have put 7E for some reason -go figure.) There are lots of other En Garde games and variations, but that'll get you in the right direction.
My brother sent me this link. I think _all_ fan fic writers could use this advice.
Please carry on:
I am a webcomic junkie. Here are a few you should already know about:
And Shine Heaven Now and Blood Knight
There are a bazillion good comics out there. Here are a few that you may enjoy for their narrative styles but may not just come across surfing. Beware, not all of them are child/work friendly. Practice safe surfing!
Saw Bill Holbrook at Otakon last summer and I've been reading his online comic for years now. Love it!
You must check this one out! Start at the very beginning and waste a good part of your day catching up. I'm also a big Girl Genius (we met the Foglio's at Katsucon this past year), Red String and stories from Seraph Inn fan. You can also waste a pleasant morning following No Need for Bushido which attacks just about every samurai/ninja stereotype.
I think 10K (mostly completed but with somehow without explaining its central mystery... will there be more? Heck if I know) and Dr. McNinja are kid safe ones though the good Doc does use naughty words, or so we're told. Dominic Deegan has dealt with rape and the main couple has had sex so not so safe for the kiddies and Questionable Content speaks of sex pretty much all the time. Wish 3 can get heavy, but is safe to surf at work... depending on your work.
I think Zebra Girl is a great story and is work safe as long as you don't poke about in Joe England's mind too much. Wapsi Square falls in that category as well, but they do have big breasts (and body images) as a theme, so play it safe. There are lots of other great comics on Blank Label Comics. Other than Wapsi Square, I'm all about Super Villains.
Don't know where Goodbye Chains one will go, but I'm really grooving on it so far. There aren't many Westerns on my list of comics. Not sure how to categorize Alpha Shade either. It's sort of AU WWI? But not really. What I like about it so far is that there is a real story here. The illustrator said his brother has written most of it and has the plans for the rest worked out. It feels like it.
On to the grown up comics... these are not filthy, like my fave sexy, losers dotc0m (pr0n and not currently updating), but they deal with adult themes or may contain nudity integral to the story. R-rated stuff by my yardstick:
Kagerou is fun, though I haven't read it recently. A scifi one I adore is Kismet- Hunter's Moon, the author has several other titles and has wrapped up Hunter's Moon, so surf about on her site. I often check Level, which is bloody, but otherwise PG-13 and I wouldn't have found most of those if it weren't for Fallen (which is pretty PG and I think currently abandoned).
Years ago I found and fell in love with Bee comix and Electronic Sheep just blew my mind away! This was back when Scott McCloud (probably still PG) was talking about the potential of web comics and I was floored. Neither one of them updates often, but they are worth going back through again and again.
I have a much more complete list as a post on my live journal account (in archive posts... not sure the best way to find them, but I tagged them webcomics). You'll also find some suggestions from friends there and can leave your own.
So, there's something of what I'm about. I also write original poetry and fiction. I've had a poem published on Equisite Corpse. (Beware adult language, thoughts and poetry be here, but new stuff? I think they've given up.) Otherwise I've been shy about getting published. I hope to change that some year and you may someday end up paying good money to read my stuff... be warned!
I'm trying to improve my writing style. Feedback and reviews are always welcome. I try to review what I read. You can private message me even if my stories are not updating.
