Fan Fiction News

News: 4/22/08 - As of the seventh of May, 2008, I will officially be on a two-year hiatus from the world of fan fiction. Yes, that's right - there won't be anything new from me whatsoever in the way of stories, reviews, or witty forum posts. The fact is, my friends, that I will be gone from home for a solid two-year period of time. As miserably depressing as that may be - okay, is - you'll cope, I promise - the fact remains that in about six months you'll have forgotten I exist altogether. But, alas, fret not! Keep me on your author alert list! Keep me favourited and give me lots of lovely reviews! (Yes, they are wonderful, really.) I'll be back sometime around May of 2010 and will, with good luck, get caught up with all my review replies before I die of old age.

For those of you residing in or near San Diego, California, you may see me on the streets dressed in a suit and tie wearing a badge that has "Elder" and my last name on it. I will be serving a two-year proselyting mission in that beautiful, Southern California city for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. So, if you happen across an Elder, be friendly to them, it may just be me.

Now, I won't just leave you entirely in the dust. I'm not that evil. So, to entertain you whilst I'm gone, I'm providing links to many of my favourite things for you in a quick list below.

A few of my favourite places on the web:
MoBuzz TV
Buck Hollywood
Mormanity
Harry Potter's Page
The Harry Potter Wikia

A few other authors of interest here at Fan Fiction.net:
Cassandra's Cross
Princess Gillybean
Mackgirl
RespiteChristopher
C. Fireball
Dogstar101
DailyProphetEditor
The Honest Politician
Time Vortex

That is, of course, not a complete list of all the wonderful authors I've had the privilege of reading whilst here, but I can assure you that these authors, as well as those listed as winners of my TML Fan Fiction Eagle Awards, are quite worth the read.

If you're a forum roamer, you may enjoy The Reviews Lounge, where reviewing - as well as interacting with some of the most awesome people here on this site - is number one. You may be interested in The Sober Universe; a close-knit group of friends having fun talking fan fiction theory as well as discussing more pressing and important issues.

Thank You,

I am a supporter of the Sober Universe (SU)

I refuse to accept J. K. Rowling's recent revelations regarding post-Deathly Hallows relationships as canon. Instead, I subscribe to the Sober Universe where we can use our imaginations to decide who ended up with who, and where my version is as true as yours.

J. K. Rowling has given us a wonderful universe to play with, but she has finished writing the books. Either she should have given us a decent epilogue to Deathly Hallows, telling us what we wanted to know, rather than what we could have guessed, or she should have kept her ideas about post-Deathly Hallows events, ships and names to herself. It is my personal belief that if she had actually tried to write any of the ships that are now "canon" (particularly George/Angelina), she would see that they do not work.

Even as the founder of the Sober Universe, I am aware that, by its very nature, fan fiction is not "canon", and cannot ever truly be canon. However, for those who showed enough respect to J. K. Rowling to make every effort to keep their stories in line with her vision - some of her recent decisions have been rather disappointing. Had she included any or all of this information at the end of Deathly Hallows, that would have been wonderful - I'm sure many, if not, most of us would have preferred a more fully complete edition of the epilogue, which we were not afforded. I love the universe Jo gave us in first seven books (though perhaps a little less of the sixth, for those who know my works), but beyond hardback canon, the only canon I stick to, if the story isn't Alternate Universe already, will be Sober Universe canon.

Note: Hermione's middle name is Jean. (Deathly Hallows, US Edition CP7, pg125) This is canon and, also, is now official. J. K. Rowling came out recently acknowledging the difference between her past interviews and the middle name found in Deathly Hallows, noting that originally she wanted Hermione's middle name to be Jane, but did not want her to share a middle name with Dolores Umbridge, and, so changed it to Jean. Because of all the confusion and fuss this has caused, I've written a wisecrack story about this. It can be read here.

Favourite Non-Canon Pairings:
- Harry/Gabrielle, Harry/Luna, Harry/Hermione, Harry/Lavender, Harry/Hannah, Harry/Pansy
- Neville/Luna
- Scorpius/Rose

Favourite Non-Quartet Character:
Gabrielle Delacour - Gabrielle is much the innocent character Ginny was in the first few books in the series. She's small, sweet, and gentle - and a thorough flirt and fan of Harry's. Her clear infatuation with Harry began when he rescued her from the lake in Goblet of Fire, I think, and since then has grown to a solid crush. She's just the best character from the series.

The Never Alone Series:
Never Alone
After an enormous fight with Pansy Parkinson, her emotional wall and façade are torn down. With a change of spirit and heart, Pansy now seeks after the Boy-Who-Lived. What will he think?

Give Yourself Away
Sequel to "Never Alone". Pansy Parkinson and the Boy-Who-Lived are madly in love, yet someone is out to destroy their relationship. Will their love stand the test?
Harry's Christmas Gift to Pansy: See Here.

Beyond
Sequel to "Give Yourself Away". After discovering Voldemort's return at the end of the school year, Pansy and Harry follow-through with their wedding. Angry mommy Parkinson isn't the only thing they'll have to be worried about.

Apotheosis
Sequel to Beyond. After the Ministry of Magic has officially recognized the return of Lord Voldemort, several of his Death Eaters slain and many more in custody, Sirius Black freed... what will come of it all?

Centros Alishir - Carmen Argenziano

My thoughts about Book 7:

On the Negative Side:

• The epilogue was a disappointment, to say the least. It told us hardly anything and left us feeling like the story was left unfinished. I, and I know I'm not alone in this, would have preferred a lengthier, more final-feeling end to the story.

• I would like to hex Ron into oblivion. I have never liked him as a character and my dislike for him has only amplified after reading Deathly Hallows. He betrayed Harry and Hermione for no valid reason, Horcrux be screwed. He was generally cruel throughout the series - this simply puts the icing on the bitter cake.

• The Gringotts scene, as well as the excessive material that led to it, was far too long. Period. This scene could easily have been cut out or changed to make it more entertaining or, at the very least, moderately interesting.

• Ginny and Harry should have had more time together. The biggest mistake Rowling made with books six and seven is cutting the Ginny and Harry relationship. As far as I'm concerned, based on how Ginny is portrayed, she would, even if he cut things off with her, found a way to come with him. She would have told him this and forced him to let her go. She would have pointed out that Lord Moldyshorts would come after her anyway and that she'd be safer with him. J.K. Rowling really needs to bandage Ginny's character - the end of Half-blood Prince as well as the little we saw of her in Deathly Hallows, really tore apart her characterisation. I'd also love to shoot Ron for cutting her key kiss with Harry short.

• When Ron was away, Harry would certainly have been more kind toward Hermione. Both of them acted like there was no one else around. In a more natural way of dealing things, they'd have turned to one another for comfort. Their relationship as friends would have been fortified by Ron's absence. A possible love triangle could have formed about this point in the story, which would have soothed Harmonians as well as created an interesting romantic background story - making Ginny's concerned comment about dating on the run far more valid.

• I've always loved Ginny. In the first five books and in the second half of the final book, she was a brilliantly awesome character. Unfortunately, we did not get to see nearly enough of her in the series - most especially Deathly Hallows. I think the anti-Ginny people would have been more willing to accept her with Harry if she'd actually been a part of the Deathly Hallows storyline. She would definitely have forced Harry to allow her to take part in the search and destruction of the Horcruxes. Not doing so, in the series, I feel, is out of character for her. I like to see Ginny with Harry, but without her as some resounding figure, I'm tempted to prefer Hermione.

• I was rather disappointed with Pansy's unfortunate role in the epilogue of Deathly Hallows - namely not being present. She needed a more prominent role in than just flirting with Draco in Half-blood Prince and could have been explored far better. She, despite Rowling's view of her because of her bitter past, has feelings and is an amazingly cool character. I'd have liked to have seen what became of her in the epilogue..

• I love Hermione's character. She's very unique and brilliant and, despite the many people who would say otherwise, is not a Mary Sue. However, her characterisation in Deathly Hallows felt off. She was far, far too weepy. She was more held together in the previous parts of the series. She would have turned to Harry for comfort rather than slinking back into the shadows like she did. Being a recluse is Harry's thing, not hers. Ron does not deserve her.

On the Positive Side:
• The entire battle was done quite well. Snape's death, the memories, Harry's 'death', Mrs. Weasley's killing of Bellatrix, all were very well done. I wish the meat of the story could have been as well orchestrated.
