FROM THE SOCIETY OF THE PANDA

Punctuation really does matter, even if it is only occasionally a matter of life or death.

Dear fellow member of ff.net,

As you may or may not have noticed, fanfiction faces a huge and terrible threat. It has slowly snuck up on our wonderful site, so slowly it has not been noticed until it is too late. We must notice it NOW.

If you have not guessed already, the threat I speak of is that of bad grammar. I don’t mean typos, to which I am sure you have suffered (I know I have), but the blatant ignorance of the basic rules of grammar: apostrophes in the wrong places, an erratic use of commas, trouble with keeping to the same tense, speech marks in odd places, capital letters popping up where they are not needed, a total lack of paragraphing. There are many stories with these symptoms out there and they clutter up every section.

I am not asking you to take up arms and track these rogue authors down until you terrorise them into correct punctuation (although if that’s what you want to do you are perfectly free to do so, unless the law tells you this is illegal, in which case you can do this but should probably take precautions not to be caught). The Society of the Panda has sworn to protect grammar. We do this by noting in reviews the occasional typo or mistake, or, if we come across a story so dreadful it is hard to resist fainting in shock, copying it into a re-writable document, editing it, and sending it the author in question.

If you are interested in this Society and would like to know more IM or e-mail me, Mousewolf, or Jennifer Spellbody, and I will send you the official letter of joining and instructions on how to go about your duty as a PPO (Panda Patrol Officer).

At the moment there are only three PPOs on the entire site and that is nowhere near enough to save fanfiction from the bad grammar. We dearly need your help.

Yours truly,

Fudge 1

PROUD FOUNDER OF THE SOCIETY OF THE PANDA

You have come across this page in your haste to discover what is not known to you...

Well, m'name is Fudge 1 (or Ffydj Wan if you're being Welsh) and even though it isn't my real name it seems to suit me better. Someday it's going to be my car registration plate. I'm going to have lots of Welsh stickers on my car. I love my country and my language; if ever I get arrested, it's going to be for being one of the crazy Cymdeithas yr Iaith members with the placards and the spray paint. So Welsh pride does occasionally sneak into fanfics.

I love almost all books, most music (cannot stand urban), role-playing games, sit-coms, and Japanese anime. I'm trying to work my way through all the Studio Ghibli films and I have to say they are SO much better than Disney. My favourites are Howl's Moving Castle (book and film), Laputa and The Cat Returns. I'm also a fan of the show Cod Lyoko (the Welsh Code Lyoko).

I'm a writer at heart, even though I don't think I'm all that good at it; it's just a hobby and I enjoy it very much.

I have about four plot bunnies hanging off my arm at the moment (damn their littlefluffy hides!) so fic writing is currently erratic and somewhat slow. Stories I SHALL definitely finish are X.A.N.A.'s Box (Code Lyoko) and that special secret fic I'm writing with partner-in-crime Mousewolf. And sincerest apologies to those waiting for The Midsummer Hostage (Artemis Fowl) because I sincerely doubt it will ever come to light. I'm sorry. You can flame me to oblivion.

I've talked your ear off for long enough now. Hwyl!

Yours, Fudge 1
