I am the artist formerly know as GothicSkitzoidImhotepLegolasD or Shinzon/AurthurDentEiffel65nut! Long huh? Well there's a long story about that that I am too tired to explain.
I frequent a good many fandoms and I have found that no matter what the obsession; be it Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, Van Helsing, or even Treasure Planet; I just cannot force myself to take an interest in the common and most popular pairings of the fandom.
In Harry Potter I religiously ship Hermione/Snape. To me it's a logical pairing. I can't see why anyone would like the Ron/Hermione pairing; it's so predictable and boring.
In Van Helsing I of course go for Dracula/Anna. Because Rox is just awesome and Kate Beckinsale is really really hot in that leather belted corset. :: drool ::
Phantom of the Opera, well that just goes without saying.
In Lord of the the Dance I found myself writing and drawing Don Dorcha/Saoirse fanart and fanfic. They just seemed to fit.
Jesus Christ Superstar; hell, I've made entire videos devoted to that ONE exchange Judas and Mary have. Not to mention the fourteen page fanfic I wrote about them.
Crossing Jordan broke my heart when Woody and Jordan got together instead of Nigel and Jordan.
Labyrinth... well that's a fandom all on it's own.
I was obsessed with Arnold Vosloo from "The Mummy" and "The Mummy Returns" for god knows how long. Hell, if I could pull off running around with just the fabric equivalent of a postage stamp I would!
Lord of the Rings has been an obsession of mine for years now. I started out as a Legolas/Arwen fan and I still am, but this weeks recent descent into Grima/Eowyn madness has made me really sit down and think seriously abut what it is that makes me keep going with these doomed pairings.
Maybe its the perpetual hope that hell will freeze over and one day when I watch Return of the King for the 432,678th time Arwen will pop out from behind that gorgeous flag thing, give Aragorn the finger and leap into Legolas' arms shouting "Take me now you gorgeous Elf-boy."
Alas, I keep watching and it never happens.
I think it takes a really strong person to admire and ship these kinds of offbeat pairings. We're the ones who go to the movies upteenzillion times a month to see Harry Potter or the like just for that brief two second glimpse of our favourite couple interacting with one another. We take pride in our badly drawn and overly melodramatic artwork and videos because it makes us happy to see two people (sometimes more) who never had the chance for an on-screen romance together on youtube or deviantart or fanfiction.net.
Those who are into the more conventional pairings, or at least the more popular ones; they always know their going to win. They always get what they want and they expect it from the movie makers the fanartists the fanvidders and the ficwriters.
I know my pairings are doomed. That doesn't stop me from loving the pairings or getting a good feeling in my heart when I see a well drawn fanart or an excellently edited fanvid for Legolas and Arwen or even my new fan acquisition; Eowyn and Grima. Nor does it stop me from shrieking like a little girl when I see a couple at DragonCon or AWA dressed as my favourite pairing.
In fact, the woman who can stomach that kind of behaviour from me and who would even join in on the squicky-pairing costumey-goodness is the woman for me.
So the next time you go look at your conventional Ron/Hermione anime styled cheesiness or your Aragorn/Arwen pencil drawing remember this; you all are GUARANTEED your happy ending. We'll keep searching for ours.
My best friend and phellow Phan is Sylent Phantom.
I highly reccomend Auri Mynonys ; I fall down at her feet and cry like a small child. She has madd skillz in the Grima/Eowyn fanfic writing.
