Hello all.
Maiyri's somewhat back. My account and my livejournal were recently hacked, and consequently all of my fic online was deleted. Everything. Consequently, I'm a little annoyed. But, everything is saved on my computer, thankfully, and am hoping to get the livejournal up again.
So. I'm not going to bother just uploading anything and everything. Some of it's pretty crap. Some of it I don't like, and mostly I just don't have the time.
Some of it I do like, and this stuff will be uploaded, along with the current stories - Misunderstood, Trailblazer, and a few oneshots that are being worked on.
If you have any requests for fic that you'd like to see resurrected, then please PM me.
Anyway, I'm Mai, and I'm a kiwi. I like Maximum Ride, but a lot less after MR4, which was crap. I write mainly Maximum Ride, though have dabbled in a few other things, and I read a lot more.
Most of my oneshots sit between 1k and 4k words, although I have rather a few drabbly type things. My longest 'story' are the three Genesis-verse fics, which are ~40k, and probably won't be uploaded unless someone makes a really, really good appeal for their un-death. And depending on how persuasive the appeal is, may be relooked at edit-wise...There are a few things that need tying up.
So.
Maiyri Rant Ahead. Abandon hope...
I am totally against those people who think that "I'm writing for fun" is an excuse for improper english. You want people to read your story? Then it has to be legible. If you don't want people to read your story then you don't damn well post it on here.
So, legibility and other important things -
Proper Grammar. Use correct punctuation. Capitalise where you should be capitalising. "I" for example, should always be capitalised. Watch your sentence structure. Don't abuse the comma.
Proper Spelling. Spell the words correctly. Run your work through spellcheck. Then read it through because Spellcheck is a dumb machine. If you know you can't spell worth a damn, or English is not your first language, then get someone to Beta for you. Check homonyms, and learn which homonym should be used in which situation. That kind of stuff you learn when you are seven or eight. If you are seven or eight then you should not be on here - you have no excuse.
Chapter Length - Do you see author's writing 250 word chapters? No. You shouldn't do it, then. Okay. While many people think that the chapter length is up to the author, unless it's a drabble or double drabble fic series, you should be looking at around a thousand words per chapter. Why? Because otherwise you're gonna end up with a really high chapter number for a really short fic. Nobody likes clicking on 'next chapter' all the time, and then waiting for the page to load, just to read another 250 words.
Characterisation - is really good. You are writing FANFICTION. People read fanfiction because they like the characters in the original piece. Unless they're total idiots, people want to read about these characters, not your OOC-ified craptacul-aracters. Therefore, OOC is a bad idea. Don't do it. ALSO, Mary-Sues? Not a good idea. OC's are fine if pulled off well. OC's are not, on the other hand, annoyingly perfect. Mary-Sue's just prove you suck at character creation.
Lazyness is not an excuse. If you know your characters are OoC, your spelling is crap or your chapter is too short, then FIX IT. Don't just whine about it expecting to be congratulated because you've finally clicked that you're a complete and total moron.
