I know I'm not a perfect writer... nor a very good one at that. But I do know quite a bit about writing... and I know what I don't like as a reader... so, I just thought I'd throw this out there:

Tips for Writing

1.) Watch your Tenses! - The biggest mistake I see, the thing that stops me from reading most stories is all in the tense in which it is written. Stories should always, always, ALWAYS be written in the past tense. The flow is left beaten and bloody when authors try to write in the present tense... It also makes anything you're writing sound awkward and unauthentic... In case you don't know what I'm talking about, here it is.

Present Tense: Corey shuts the door as she flicks on the lights. She lays her keys on the table beside the door as she takes off her jacket and walks towards her bedroom. The bedroom is dark, she can hear the fan blowing quietly in the background. She always leaves the fan on, she can't sleep without it.

2.) ... It's the 21st century people... USE SPELLCHECK! I would also read your work out loud to yourself, if it doesn't sound good when you say it, it doesn't sound good when people read it.

3.) Watch your words! Most commonly mixed up words: Your, You're. There, Their, They're. Quit, Quiet, Quite. It's really annoying when it happens over and over again within the same work.
