Author has written 19 stories for Myst/Riven, Breath of Fire, Lord of the Rings, and Silmarillion. Interests: I am graduate student in classics: Greek and Latin literature and culture. Egyptology is my secondary hobby. Fanfic areas: ~ Myst. I love the characters of Myst, the idea that writing books in a certain way can lead to the worlds they describe, the lost civilization archetype and D'ni's tragic history, and of course the ancient language and inscriptions. Catherine, the prophet/mystic archetype, especially appeals to me. ~Tolkien. I have been reading Tolkien since Orlando Bloom was born. I am an anomaly: a stuffy purist who genuinely enjoys "Kiwi Tolkien". As such, I aggravate some readers, because I apply my fairly decent working knowledge of Middle Earth, Elvish, and so on to Jackson's films. Why? Well, Tolkien's so monolithic that writing canonical fanfic feels to me like adding a fresh coat of paint to the Mona Lisa. Jackson's mistakes and embellishments give me the itch to reach for a paintbrush. More to the point, what purists deplore as anti-Tolkien, I tend to view as Jackson's "fanfic moments". I don't always approve of his alterations as a straight adaptation of Tolkien. But they meet my definition of fanfic: 1) embedding original material in an existing world and/or 2) presenting existing material in a new light. I find scope for exploration in his unfamiliar, unexpected territory. Granted, elves have no place in Helm's Deep, but if they *were* there, what would have happened? How does having elves in Aragorn's army change the spirit of the tale? It is questions like that which I enjoy pondering. For some readers, any amount of Jackson is too much; for others, they enjoy my attempts to integrate the best of Jackson's embellishments into a closer alignment with canon and the master's conception and style of the characters. | |||||||||
