And Crimson Tears...I should take it down but...well, naturalistic fallacy and all... --OoO-- The Squiggly Green Line These are simply some grammatical and practical pointers I think will do the fanfiction world some good. Ignore my use of punctuation in this. 1) The difference between then and than. Then is used in a context of time. ‘She will clean the toilets and then eat your brains’ ‘and then what?’ Than is used to compare. ‘Orochimaru’s breasts are so much bigger than Tsunade’s’ ‘Better late than never’ ‘You drool so much more than my dog’ 2) Your and You’re Your is possessive. ‘Those are your limbs’ ‘You forgot your baby’ You’re is a joining of you and are. ‘You’re stepping on my foot’. Saying ‘You forgot you’re baby’ which translates to ‘You forgot you are baby’ will not only change the meaning of the sentence, it will also make you sound like a caveman. The same goes for Their and They’re. ‘It’s their turn to eat’ ‘They’re late for the show’ 3) Speech After someone has said something which does not end in an exclamation or question mark, you put a comma before the closing speech marks, unless the speech is the whole sentence. So; YES: “Close your eyes and listen,” he whispered in my ear. YES: “Close your eyes and listen.” His hand gripped my wrist until it was ringed in blue. NO: “These mushrooms taste funny.” I said as the trees started changing colours. NO: “These mushrooms taste funny,” I lay on my back, trying to blink the colours away. And please note the lack of capitals after commas, and the use of them after full stops. 4) Exclamation marks Don’t use them when narrating, unless in loud explosions or in first person when describing direct thought. And only use multiple exclamation marks in humour and even if that, in very special occasion. Such as being extremely funny. If you’re not, you can’t get away with it!! 5) Time breaks/flashbacks Dividing your story with interruptions such as; FIVE SECONDS LATER or FLASHBACK, it just screams ‘incompetent writer’ to me. Is it really that much harder to write ‘After half an hour hours of mind-blowing sex’ instead of HALF AN HOUR LATER “Well that was fun.” 6) Author’s notes Do. Not. Interrupt. A. Story. With. Your. Freaking. Comments. It completely interrupts the flow of the fic and reminds the reader it’s just a story, stopping us from sinking into the plot. We don’t care if you have a headband matching Sasuke’s pink slippers or if you hope we understood what you just wrote. You can add that at the end of the story. Right, that’s about it. Take it or leave it, but I hope it helps someone out there. And honestly, a Beta is the best thing you can get (preferably one that is good at grammar and spelling...) to improve writing quality in the most basic sense. And if not that, for the love of all that is yaoi, proof read your story!
