Author has written 15 stories for Dragon Ball Z.

Давайте писать, давайте читать.

To me, this is the single most important question a fan fiction author should ask themselves -

When you write, do the words you're putting down evoke any sort emotion in yourself? Because if you're not giving yourself some kind of feeling, be it happiness, anger, sadness, whatever, then how do you expect your readers to feel anything? Don't just write a string of words down just for the sake of it.

Please take these three points to heart (bear in mind I may or may not have been guilty of some of these before):

1. DBZ doesn't take place in Japan, it doesn't even take place in our world as we know it. Obvious references to real world places, objects and people are horrendously out of place in DBZ fics and will often put me off reading. If you can't come up with place names, what are you worried about? The series has such imaginative gems as Nicky Town, West Capital (not so out there when you consider the characters that make up Tokyo, teehee) and Ginger Town.

Biscuitville. Look, I just came up with one. The same goes for names. Use names from all over the world and you'll be fine. Jacques, Gordon, Jens. String some syllables together and you'll be good.

2. Please don't use Japanese in your story. Even if you've taken an entire semester of it at junior high, it's just plain weird. Do you hear me?! It also seems to me that the more Japanese words inserted, the younger the author.

3. Don't write about things you don't understand. You know what I'm talking about.

I'm kidding by the way.

I just searched the words 'suck' and 'summaries' using the search story function. 13,782 records found...sigh. If you tell your reader that you suck at summaries, a single sentence, what makes you think they'll think you can write an entire story? The summary is the front cover, the trailer for your story. Write a good one!

Nobody reads the lyrics in songfics.

Yet more of my pearls of wisdom...recently I've begun to read fics from outside my usual area (i.e. Gohan and Videl), usually involving Pan or Goten. I read a lot of summaries for Pan/Trunks fics, a pairing that I find pretty interesting and would like to explore in the future. But I notice that in a lot of these Pan is made out to be some love sick girl pining after Trunks, pretty much the perfect guy in her eyes. Mix it up a little! If anyone should be the little bitch it should be Trunks! I generally disregard GT, but when it comes to Pan it's hard not to think of her as that version but in my mind she has a few differences to how she turns out there. But either way she can actually be a pretty cool character and deserves a little more respect from authors.
