However, if a disclaimer in a story has directed you here, then I want to take a moment to add that it's probably due to references and portrayals of mental illnesses. I'd like to state now that, though I have done research and have tried not to mess with the facts of the illness, creative license has probably been used and so the portrayal or references will not be totally accurate, and presented facts should not be taken as such. Try researching it yourself. You'll learn a lot. If I may, now, I want to take a second to correct a few myths about mental illnesses. For those not interested, please scroll down to the next line. 1) Psychopathy and psychosis are NOT the same thing. Those suffering from psychopathy have no empathy nor a sense of right or wrong. They will hurt others to get attention or to get their way. It is THESE people who make the calculating plans to kill (or should, anyhow). They are somehow confused with those suffering from psychosis. These people experience delusions about the outside world. More often than not, they are very disorganized and more likely to hurt themselves than to hurt others (though it's not unheard of). By the way, 'psycho' refers to psychosis, generally. Not psychopathy. 2) Schizophrenia and Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID; also called Multiple Personality Disorder) are NOT the same thing either. People with schizophrenia hear voices. These voices tend to be belittling or threatening. People with DID have the changing personalities. 3) People with clinical depression are unlikely to get up and engage in high-energy activities, such as chasing a person. People with clinical depression usually suffer from fatigue as well. In short, if you plan to use a mental illness in a story, PLEASE at least take ten minutes to see just WHAT you're writing about.
