Story Updates
5/24 - Still clearing my head of some of the most disturbing scenes, or at least starting them.
6/4 - The bad news, Chapter 22 is not done. The good news, Chapter 23 almost is. LOL!
7/15 - This fic has not been abandoned. There is some wild stuff going on in the financial markets and I am mixed up in it.
About me and my fic
I love unusual pairings and I find the well-written ones the most intriguing. I love the fan fiction more than the books, probably because they, not the books or the movies, inspired me to delve into this fandom. My dream would be if Rowling would allow other people write for her world.
This is my first thorough attempt at a work of fiction in years. I prefer writing and reading non-fiction, but the fan fiction I have read centered around the Harry Potter books have inspired me to write this piece.
I started writing this story and its outline in April '05. I will not stop writing until it is completed or I keel over, since I have the ending already written. I love stories with long chapters, so this one will be a monster when I am done.
I was playing around with the Arthimancy (numerology) sites and this one: Foretelling the Future by the Numbers: An Introduction to Arithmancy told why they believed the Patils were placed into different houses, contrary to popular practice. I noticed that the Patils and Harry Potter all shared the same heart number; while Padma’s character and social numbers were one higher Harry’s and Parvati’s were one less. The words “perfect love triangle” screamed out to me but I could not find any stories featuring this. If you find any, let me know.
Enemy of Good Fiction ~ Propaganda!. Always remember, the slippery slope can make us all slide down it at any time.
I would like to take the time to thank the brave people who have read my fic since the early chapters (especially Thalarian for checking Chapters 9 and 10, along with the encouragement). Hopefully, my writing has improved since then.
My fic made it to the Library on Dark Lord Potter under Romance. That was a surprise and I did get some decent feedback. It is also on the constantly updated list at Fanfic Authors.
My current betas are Jynx67 (author at Sycophant Hex, grammartician and adviser), nezza88 (for the British dialect advice and the male POV), and The Fanfic Guardian (who eats fanfic and professional writers for breakfast, yummy). Writing Obscurity is my writing blog/Yahoo Group.
Warning #1: This story is not for those who have fanon preferences—I have no problem creating or destroying any relationship. I had this thing outlined back in April '05 and I will not deviate from it.
Warning #2: I view canon differently than most due to my and others' life experiences/observations, my own theories concerning the series, and the intriguing theories of others. If anyone has any questions or comment, please feel free to tell me.
Warning #3: Take that M rating on my fic seriously; anything NC-17 will be posted elsewhere as an exercise in learning the difference between the two. FYI: Any NC-17 stuff will be posted at AFF. I will let you know when, but it won't be for a while.
Warning #4: There will be all sorts of vices mentioned as I see fit—this fic is not for the puritanical or PC brainwashed crowd. Nothing is more annoying than reading a review with preaching of any type in it. I am of the pro not-telling-grown-folks-what-to-do mentality.
Warning #5: I will offend your sensibilities, so keep that in mind.
Fanfic pet peeve #1: For those who ship Hermione with other characters in her year—quit making her younger than canon! I hate that with the passion of a thousand, white hot suns. Just because she is older than most in her year does not make her any less special nor does it make her a damn child molester (yes, some people actually do believe that!) Harry/Cho—hello, buy a clue here (Cho is older than Hermione for the clueless). Stop with the ageism, please, folks!
Fanfic pet peeve #2: For personal reasons, I find male pregnancy stories insulting, not to mention just plain wrong.
Fanfic pet peeve #3: There is no excuse for getting the time periods for Harry's Hogwarts years wrong or what happened on the Muggle side during them. Does Yahoo and Google ring a bell? HP Lexicon? If you are anal about dates like me, there is this: http://www.timeanddate.com/.
Fanfic pet peeve #4: Harry's eyes are emerald green; Ron and Dumbledore's are blue; Riddle and McGonagall's are dark (brown); Luna's are pale grey; Ollivander's are pale blue; Hermione and Ginny's are brown; Draco and his father's are grey...any questions? It seems like the only character who's eye color remains consistent in fanfic is Snape's, which are black, like Hagrid's, by the way.
Fanfic pet peeve #5: Bad grammar, formatting, and spelling—those three things make me hit the back button quicker than anything. I do not have time nor the energy to force my eyes to figure out where they should go; too many mistakes can be like walking through a meadow and suddenly stepping into ankle-deep holes.
Fanfic pet peeve #6: Bad summaries—"What if...?" Scroll. "I suck at..." Scroll. "The Slys and the Grys are out." Cue West Side Story music and finger snapping. Scroll. "IWRITEMYSUMMARYINALLCAPSSOYOUCANSEEIT PLEASE REVIEW!" Left eye spasms. Scroll. "Dumbledore, Snape, and a violin... What else would one need on a moonlit...?" Cringes, shakes head. Scroll. "Harry Potter and The Land Before Time Xover! Slash!" Shuts down computer; hunts for Advil.
Fanfic pet peeve #7: Flat and poor characterizations. The worst are the ones having the males characters acting like a bunch of girls with peni...yuk. I am guilty of poor characterization, but at least I am trying to improve. Even if the characters are OoC, there is no excuse for not trying to give them life and depth.
Fanfic Pet Peeve #8: For pity’s sake, put the fucking character’s actions with his/her damn dialogue! Every character gets their own separate paragraph for whatever s/he does and feels. If another character does and/or says something else, make a new paragraph. Don't believe me? Submitted for your approval: Strunk and White. I should not have to reread lines trying to figure out whom said/thought/did/felt what because it messes up the flow. There are times a writer can do it (like during narrative), but too much and I stop reading. This goes for published authors too, including Rowling (who likes to put two different characters’ dialogue in the same sentence…groan).
Fanfic pet peeve #9: Songfics annoy me. I can deal with a quote from a song or poem, but a whole fic written for it just does not call to me.
Fanfic pet peeve #10: Author's notes in the middle of a scene just ruin the flow and I stop reading. There is no fucking excuse for it, ever.
Fanfic Pet Peeve #11: Head-hopping – I am an analytical person and multiple point-of-view changes without a warning (breaks) makes me crazy. Who in the flippedity fuck am I supposed to be feeling for here? Do not change POVs during a sex or fast-moving action scene! Pick a skull and stick with it.
